Concept- National security is the requirement to maintain the survival of the state through the use of economic power, diplomacy, power projection and political power. The concept was developed after world war I and II. The concept of national security occupies an important place in international relations. It involves the formation and achievement of national interests against the existing and potential hostilities and pressures - external as well as internal. The economic development, social justice and national security go hand and hand. The linkage between the pace of technological and economic development and dimensions of national security are so strong that there can be no security without development and no development without security.
Definitions- There is no single universally accepted definition of national security. The few notable definitions are as under :-
    (a) Water Lipman, in 1943, defined the national security first time saying that “A nation has security when it does not have to sacrifice its legitimate interests to avoid war, and is able, if challenged, to maintain them by war."
    (b) As per Robert Mc Namara “ Development of a country is part of national security”.
    (c) Dr JN Bandopadhyay said “sovereignty, unity and popularity kept the national security secured”.
    (d) General JJ Singh said “the national security is the preservation of the core values critical to a nation or a state from internal and external threats”.
    Factors/Elements of National Security
    1. Political Factors. Several political factors affect national security :-
    (a) Superpowers dominate the subordinates or newly emerging State.
    (b) Superpower tend to keep international political environment in a state of flux, so that they can get greater influence in international affairs.
    (c) Thirdly, events in the neighboring countries can also pose a threat to national security. For example, influx of refugees from East Pak in 1971, posed a serious threat to the security of India and compelled her to support muktivahini, which formatted Bangladesh.
    (d) Fourthly, the encouragement of suppressive activities against a country can also pose a threat to its security.
    (e) Finally, the security policy of a country is also influenced by the change in the external or internal environments.
    2. Economic Factors. Apart from the political factors several economic factors also influenced the security policy of a country. Advanced countries used it as an instrument. It is well known that USA pressurized India, not to innovate nuclear bombs otherwise sanctions will be imposed.
    3. Psychological Factors. The psychological factors also influence the security policy of a country. States seek maximum power due to fear threat and try to enhance their defence potential. Usually the states adopt both defensive as well as deterrent approach. It is a fact that in the present context of nuclear deterrence, there is no big war after World War I, only limited wars were there.
    4. Social Factors. The equal social developments is very necessary in all the societies. In fact threat to national security is greatly increase due to increase in subversive activities. In fact it can be easily said that economic development, social justice and national security go hand in hand.
    5. Impact of International Environment. Finally the national security of a country also depends on the changing international environment. As no country is sure of hostility or friendship of another country. Strife among various powers pose problems for national security. Flow of sophisticated weapons in a particular region is also pose a security problem for the other countries in the region.
Conclusion. We can conclude that no major nation afford to take the risk with its security on the assumption that all nation will co-operate in their own self interest. A state must keep its own guard up
