You are an amazing talented man Tom. Jessie, of all the TH-cam video that I am subscribed to, you channel is the only one that I never ever miss a video. Keep up the good work!!!
handtool worker here- 100% agree, you use the best tools available to get the job done well. Mad respect for you and Tom, that chainsaw work is bonkers great! Excited to see the next video :)
Its always a pleasure to watch a master at work. Tom's use of the knives and chisels is mastery and his touch with a chainsaw is awesome! I am sure people would pay to just sit and watch him all day long.
Teaching the new is how we protect the old. It is so very important for our masters (in any craft) to teach and inspire the new generations to continue our heritages. Those are the things that keep us grounded in our humanity. Tom, I was facinated to watch you carve and bring to life the interior of that log. I'm very pleased that you support and take part in teaching you craft to others. There are masters that are too busy to realize their crafts are dying. I eagerly await the video series. Thank you for keeping your craft alive.
Big shout to Tom from the UK.Your work is magnificent. I have really enjoyed this series and am looking forward to your next collaboration. Thanks for letting us share this with you, Jesse.
Great work Tom. We live in Southeast Alaska which is truly a blessing when it comes to native carvings and art. Very inspiring. Can't wait for the next series with Tom.
Well, a big shout out from me to both Tom and you for featuring him, I'm looking forward to seeing more. As I watched this I noticed there were 73 thumbs down, just can't imagine who or why would downvote this, sound was a a bit screwed with the chainsaw at the beginning but the rest of the vid more than made up for it. Using a chainsaw the way Tom did is as much an art as the way he uses his knives.
Watched this series start to finish...couldn't look away. Tom is so humble and the process is phenomenal. Can't wait to see this specialty knife making! As always Samurai, great work! I also am in need of a house update video. Had me hooked since the pavers and the way you put that deck up with that fascia.
Samurai has been a titan in the woodworking world in my eyes for years now..to see him in a student setting is absolutely amazing..good stuff gents. Thank you both for everything
Tom, You Sir are Amazing***** What a pure Craftsman.. Thank you so much for letting us see you work. Jesse Thank you for posting this for us who can never get to where you are. This was great.
Shout out to Tom. That totem is absolutely beautiful. Your skill is truly inspirational. Can't wait to see the Samurai in student mode, for real. Let us see if his machismo can take a back seat to learning something new. I'm rooting for you Jessi.
I love Tom's coolness and ease. Seems like a wise guy! Love the Samurai for the ability to know when someone can teach you something. That's pretty rare these days..
Tom, thank you for let all of us witness you and your craft. It is awesome to see your experience and with that the ease it can be to create such and amazing piece of work when you know what you are doing. I love learning new things and trying new things as I am sure many that watch these videos... learning from people like you is how all of us can take pieces of your craft and knowledge and apply it to our future tasks. There is no plans in the pipeline for me to try and wrestle a huge log into a totem pole but maybe more of a spruce 4x4 to see what I can do!! Thank you Samurai for putting this together and I look forward to more learning as always!
Tom is an amazing carver and designer of Totem pole art. What an inspiration to watch him in action. So creative in his processes from rounding the log to using the hand made tools he specifically designed to make precise carving seem easy.! Thank You Samurai Carpenter and Tom Lafortune for sharing this wonder series of TH-cam videos.!!!!
Tom is the man!! Amazing to see his skill bring that welcome figure to life!! Take the opportunity to learn as much as you can Samurai!! kinda jealous can wait to see it
Very impressive work. Love hearing him express his feel for the wood and him letting it speak to him. I can see and hear your appreciation of his skills in making the wood come alive. Thanks, for sharing your own skills also. So appreciative of your channel and your time.
Just love when true craftsman are willing to share and teach. As many of us as possible need to learn, become masters our selves and pass it on to the next generation
Yeah, Tom, keep it coming - can't wait to learn from you! Like the Samurai said, it's very rare to have an accomplished artisan with so many years of experience under his belt imparting his knowledge. I'm especially interested in the forging of the knives and the tempering process.
Ur extremely lucky to watch this from start to finish, my hands go up for this great man, I'm blessed to be a carver for my tribe in Tulalip Washington and the best way to learn is by watching, if ur ever in the area stop by
Thank You Tom for sharing. You are a Very Talented Artist and Honorable Man. I thoroughly enjoyed this video and look forward to the next one. Samurai Keep Up the Good Work.
Shout out to Tom. Keeping it real. Would love to see more. Would have liked to have seen the paint up on the pole, and seen it in action wherever it's ending up.
What an incredible craftsman. Tom thank you so much for giving the world a look into your techniques and skill. Truly amazing to watch you shape the face.
This was a great video to bring me back to my younger days. I grew up on the Island (Duncan area) and would spend a few weeks every summer in Victoria. I fondly remember watching craftsmen carving Totem's at the north end of the park near the Parliament buildings. I didn't realize then as much as I do now what talent they had and that I was watching history. I do a lot of woodworking but have never attempted anything like this. Tom did a marvelous job.
I would just like to say I think your work is awesome Tom, I am truly blown away by your work! You are blessed with a wonderful talent, keep on carving.
Tom beautiful work! I especially like that you only stain and highlight the wood and allow the natural beauty of the grain to show through. Work of your caliber is essential to continuing the legacy of native North American culture. People like you are the reason cultures and art lives on.
nice! Tom you're great. I am part native and you've given me some insight into salish design. I hope to carve my own poles as soon as I have the space. Thank you!
Shoutout to Tom! What an amazing craftsman and artist! I am truly in awe of what he manages to accomplish. And for the record, i think Its pretty badass the way he swings that chainsaw.
That is insane. What a finish. I liked what you said about using the best tools at the time. I would love to see someone who dislikes using the nine traditional tools, carve wood using a chainsaw, finish it as nicely as what Tom has done and tell me that's cheating. I think most arborist Would struggle to finish like that. Great job Tom.
Tom, Great job on the carving, it turned out really beautiful!! I’m excited to see what you guys do in the future and maybe see some of your work someday in person on Vancouver Island.
Found this series amazing to watch... like the Samurai... motivated to get to carving up some wood of my own, will watch intently as Tom continues to bless us with is knowledge !! Thanks Tom!!!
Tom, Thanks for sharing your craft and true artsmanship with us. It was an honor and true pleasure to watch. Please consider starting your own channel!
Tom, thanks for sharing your passion. I like the confidence you've built in your skills. It says a lot about the "matter of fact" and deliberate way you tackle your job. I too love making sawdust but although I can satisfactorily create beauty in flat work projects lathe boxes & bowls, most of it comes from the wood, wood grains and/or contrasting woods I choose and photos I might highlight in frames. I've never had the vision or been able to figure out the minutiae of a plan to recreate depictions of life like animals or humans, like you can do so well. It is an amazing accomplishment and I commend you sir ! Thanks again, a fan ......... Steph_Louisiana
Love this. Cannot wait for the teaching video series with Tom. Thank you Tom for sharing your craft & tradition with us! Very inspired. (Hi from Calgary)

Hey Tom. I have enjoyed these videos so much. As a beginning Carver I take every chance to learn from those with more and different experience. I can't wait to see what's to come in the Samurai's learning experience. Thanks
