Restoring 140 year old Wagon Wheels hand forged in Sweden.

  • I found these wheels in an old shed whilst felling tree's. The story is they came from a flat cart from the late 1800's that have rotted in the 1960's and the wheels were kept. The cart was made in a northern city in Sweden and the Wheel maker operated from 1863 to 1904.
    I intend to restore and preserve these original wooden Wagon wheels and turn them into lights for my old school.
    Thank you.

    Nce work Simon, the wheelwrights and smiths of old knew their stuff. When I was a boy I used to bunk school and go to help an old smith, grinding the coke, operating the bellows, and just watch him work. people would come from miles around seeking his skill. They were happy days. Stay safe.

      Thanks William, I used to go to an old smith with the older girls to get the horses shoed and also loved it there. I don'y know the last time you have seen a forge but they are still here in places left behind when the old men died. I liked the old days and now living here it is such recent past you can still find those happy days.

    Very rare to find 4 matchning. True craftsmanship at the time and most likely they are perfectly round. And again, think of all the history in these wheels. They have seen a lot of hard work mile after mile🤠 Nice job as always.

      I so admire the craftsmanship of old and what basic equipment was used to achieve such things.

    Very nice work Simon, I am happy that you took care of these wheels, so they can live another 100 years or more without any problems. I love to see old things be taken care of, they are a part of our history. Hälsning från grannlandet 🙂

    Thanks Simon, nice project. It took me a long time also to find wagon wheels, I found old metal wheels with axle's which I plan on making a shepherd's hut hopefully this summer. Take care.

    Nice job on those wheels.. I've seen similar wheels with integrated LED-lights not too long ago. They were hanging in a nautical theme pub not too far from my birthplace🙂 I like furniture and light fixtures in that style.. it's sturdy, smells gooood😋, and the mix of old wood and forged steel with the right patina really speaks for it self👍 I can imagine like a library, with Chesterfield furniture, heavy oak or teak tables, bookshelves with leather bound atlases and other great books, an old style globus bar table loaded with good single malt whiskys.. and of course the wheels with dimmable LED lights.. one can only dream😁 All the best to you, looking forward to the next one👌

    Thanks Simon... we're looking forward to the end result! I really hope you have it in your plans to do a thorough tour of that room/ area/ space/ lady-man cave when it's all done. However, knowing you... it will always be an evolving project!
    Have a happy day and an enjoyable weekend - all of you up there!

      Thank you AJ, it will be finished I want to move on to other things but we need somewhere nice to live. Every year you ask about ice fishing and every year I tell you no. No ice fishing I would rather put broken glass in my eyes. Take care my friend.

      @@arctic-rebel Sorry... me bad! I'll have to make a few mental notes to remind myself never to ask about the ice fishing... ever again! To be honest, I never want to chip you off... I'm already seeing myself laying in hospital... in traction... because you sorted my wayward self out good and proper!!🤣🤣

      Thanks Heith, I thought about Edison bulbs because I really like the look and easy to just hang. I want the focus to be on the wheels and not the bulbs.

    Howdy Simon- beautiful old wheels! I love what you did with them- leaving the somewhat worn, yet still sturdy and useable look. Lots of people who don’t really know what they’re doing destroy beautiful old pieces. Hope all is well. Take care and God bless

      Thanks Eric, given how many wagons there were I wonder what happened to all the wheels? The weather sure is wild this year you must be seeing a lot of ice form. Be safe my friend.

    Who is going to take over when you’re too old to take care of the village? Normally I would say you need to train someone to be your apprentice, then they can take over the care of the village. But I don’t believe anyone wants to do that and I don’t think you would have the patience to train someone. It would take a lifetime of knowledge in order to bring someone up to par. In the end when you retire for good there will be no one to take over and the village will be in further decline. If you get this far, I think the wheels will look better as a satin finish. That high gloss is a little too much. Always watching from Panama City Florida,USA. 🇺🇸🦅 No Snow Just Breeze !

    • @arctic-rebel
      @arctic-rebel  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Hi Kirby, first thing is the wheels are Satin. They were wet I would never finish an old job in gloss so you can rest easy 100% satin finish which I did say at the time. With regards to training I owned several large companies and have had many apprentices. Your right I do not have the patience anymore. I will also not deal with employment law and bullshit anymore I am totally done with that. It is a huge problem in all remote area's that involve hard living, the young leave for the cities and never return. The other interesting thing you said was when I retire, men here do not retire they die.

    Like what you’ve done with the wheels, nice idea with led lighting.
    Just a thought will the wheels shrink any more and the metal rim come loose
    once you fit them in a warm room. Cheers Simon thanks for sharing. 👍
    PS my grandfather was a wheelwright.

    • @arctic-rebel
      @arctic-rebel  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Hi Terry, Grandfathers are a great source of craftsmanship, one of mine was a sniper and then a coach-builder. The metal rims will never come loose. Timber expands in the heat and contracts in the cold as does the steel but the way they fit them it a true art and they will never part.

  • @kirbygulbrandsen4507
    @kirbygulbrandsen4507 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    I have a LED light in my kitchen that would fit the middle yet not so big as to hide the wheel. Why don’t you look online and maybe you will see something that you like. Just thinking with an open mind, if you don’t see anything better than stay with your plan. Just Sayin !

      I want the wheel to be the focus and not the lights thus the type of lighting I feel is appropriate to use.

    Amazing job Simon .hard wax oil is that similar to boiled linseed oil

    • @arctic-rebel
      @arctic-rebel  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thank you, Hard wax is not like boiled linseed oil at all totally different products and uses. I do use boiled linseed oil and keep it in stock all the time. It has so many uses in so many ways. Hard wax has only one use and that is to give a hard cleanable finish on floors work tops or furniture. It comes with or without color. in satin or gloss finish bt I only use it in satin finish the gloss is unpredictable.
