Comparison between Yamaha U1 and U3

  • We are frequently asked what the difference is between the Yamaha Model U1 and the Model U3. There's not a great difference; however the U3 is more imposing and offers wider tonality range. The U1 is slightly more compact, and will better suit some homes, studios or teaching environments.

    The U3 has a sound very close to a Mellow Grand Piano, without the expense or space. The biggest issue with the U3 would be its very loud in a small room, however the sound is just too gorgeous to worry about the neighbors.

    I bought a new Yamaha U1 this past Sunday. It will be delivered on the 5th. While looking at and playing both models, I couldn't justify the $3500 price difference. I happily settled on the U1, new, for under $9 thousand.

    I really like the U3, played on one in more than one occasion. Very impressive Bass projection, one of the best in upright pianos. I think the U1 is too bright/harsh, tough. However, the sound on this U3 is not very nice, but I think is due to the recording.

    I am searching for a piano for my son ( he’s 8 years old) and I am looking for the differences between U1 and U3. Love the video you produce, and when I realized you are located at Bath, especially on 5:39 when I saw the street, what’s a nice surprise! I was studying my undergraduate in university of bath back in 2004. Then I checked your website hoping your business still running, as the COVID 19 caused many small businesses to struggle. And I am very glad you are still opening. I hope one day when I visit Bath, I will be able to come by and say hi to you and thank you for making this video :) p.s I moved to Canada 10 years ago. Take care and stay safe.

    What do you think about the U1j is it a good piano to invest in? I heard the it loses it's tone quality after 5-10 years

    • @ThePianoShopBath
      @ThePianoShopBath  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The U1J is the same as the U1 but with external refinements. Our experience is that Yamaha pianos retain their tonal qualities for many decades. This is mainly a subjective matter, or one of direct comparison. At The Piano Shop we have dozens and dozens of U1s and U3s coming through our door. Because we have a fairly dedicated Yamaha room we are able to compare the same model with sometimes over 25 years difference in their age. Yamaha appears to have made the most consistent piano in terms of tonal quality and action of all the pianos we see. It is the reason for their undoubted success. It certainly is a good piano to invest in, but we do do not recognise that the tone quality diminishes. Perhaps the comments come from users who have cited their piano in an unfavourable environment?

    what's the difference between the U3 and the UX1?Because I recently bought a UX1 and the sound and touch was a lot better than the U3.

    • @ThePianoShopBath
      @ThePianoShopBath  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Ajay Seth ..... UX1 is an upgraded U1, almost always (if not always) a grey-market import. It's a little beefier than the standard U1. The most obvious difference is in the backposts. X series have a radial design in the shape of an X. However the U3 is physically bigger and with a larger spruce soundboard. If you found that the UX1 had a better sound, then choose the UX1. We don't see UX1s at The Piano Shop in Bath. We do see a lot of U1s, and some people prefer tem than the U3s. Question to you: Are you comparing the two pianos under the same conditions, in the same room at the same time? Were both pianos in the open or was one of them against a wall?

    • @ajayseth2671
      @ajayseth2671 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      They were both open and were in the same room.But I found that the tine and the touch of the UX1 was richer and the bass was clearer than the U3.So I made the decision to buy the UX1.The U1 however was not as great sounding as the U3 I must say but the UX1 was something else.

    do any of these pianos have ivorite keytops?

    • @ThePianoShopBath
      @ThePianoShopBath  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      No Garry. Most of the Yamahas we have in our showrooms are 80s and 90s pianos before the advent of the 'ivory feel' materials that we see so commonly in the new pianos. I personally own a 1986 Yamaha C3 Grand which I love. These use the same plastic materials as the U1 and U3, and I can't fault them. But, I understand why you ask ..... Robb

    I have one in black.. what I dont like is the bass notes are way too muddy. If more than 2 notes are played... it has a very distorted muddy sound.
    And I dont play just classical music, that seems to be always the demo with this model. I play rock, country, blues, gospel, &, alternate music, etc
    I would not recommend this or any U-3 Yamaha upright.. they all have a heavy, dense, & muddy bass (the last 2 octaves in the bass range) Selling mine cheap....

    • @ThePianoShopBath
      @ThePianoShopBath  ปีที่แล้ว

      It sounds like it needs a good technician to get in amongst it to regulate the action and maybe re-face the hammers to give a crisper sound. When was the piano last overhauled? How old is it? Is it a U1 or a U3?

  • @elizabethgrubbs3683
    @elizabethgrubbs3683 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Upgraded from U1 to U3. Could not be more happier. If you have high ceiling living room U3’s a better choice. u1’s sound is tiny. Otherwise, both are excellent pianos. U3 is about $2900 more in Denver area. Hope it helps.

      We use a ZOOM H4n digital recorder to capture the sound. The one thing we find is that the position in the showroom can severely impact on the recording due to the different room reflections. Also, it's not always possible to position the microphone head in the same place. Finally, there is the matter of whether the piano is free standing in the room or placed next to a wall. We record the pianos as an indicator only, not a reference. We do thank you for listening and commenting. Robb
