@@GodDieux Yes I have seen it too, in my opinion, the king looks good, the queen would look a little more accurate if the crown was leaning inwards to have a more rounded feel. The bishop looks nice. And now the knight, the overall design of the piece is pretty successful, although the facial details are not at the level of Noj for example (talking about specifically 1970s version, not 1950s), but I can forgive that. The one major eye-poking thing to me is the size/height of the knight, it has the same height as the crown of the queen, which is a little too high. That is particularly visible when you look at the knight and the rook next to each other, the knight dwarfs the rook, the rook looks small but it is actually the right size. And the last detail I was able to notice, is the top hole of the rook, it goes a little too deep, it should be more shallow. Overall, from all versions that our eyes were seeing as Fischer Dubrovnik, this one is actually decent, but only with these several adjustments it would be really good. Personally, I'm more in love with 1970s Dubrovnik rather than 1950s, but taking only Staunton castle offer, I would rather go with their 1950s which is great. But since the Royal chess mall corrected their rook, I found their 1950s superb, I like their knight just a bit more than Staunton castle, even though they are both great. This is a matter of personal preference.
I’ve never seen a 5-cut Rook before. Very strong and solid piece!
Yes that is unique for Dubrovnik set because the Minčeta tower in city of Dubrovnik has 5 openings :)

I have been thinking about your chess board since I saw your video. And I really like that chess board. I tried to buy the chess board from Royal Chess Mall. But Royal Chess Mall only had the board in 60mm squares and I needed bigger.
But House of Staunton had that design board in 2.5 inch squares or 63.5mm squares. So you made me spend more money on chess. And I got the that board in Maple and Stripped Ebony in 2.5 inch squares.

The best Dubrovnik chess set u can find in the world is from Noj in Slovenia, i managed to buy one and the set is simply said PERFECTION they really know what they are doing i would highly recommend you to buy one if you are interested in authentic Dubrovnik styled pieces. They specialize in making those pieces, they even have 3 different variations including the set from 1950 chess tournament where it became famous, and of course the set that Bobby Fischer the Dubrovnik II.
Nice to see the Royal Chess Mall ones up close. I recently bought the Staunton Castle 1950 Dubrovnik set in Boxwood & Mahogany. I really love the design but I wish I would have known I could have gotten unweighted ones. I’ve never owned a heavily weighted set before (or ever used one for that matter) and I was really hesitant about getting one but everyone said that’s the way they are now and you’ll love it….but I really don’t like it 🙁 I probably won’t be able to afford another set like it again so I’ll just have to try to get use to it but anyway the Royal Chess Mall one looks really nice too.

Would you consider reviewing the unweighted version of this that RCM sells? I am wanting an unweighted set to carry to coffee shop and friend's house to play. and I think I heard the original ones were unweighted as well. I'd love to see someone show how stable they are (tipping hazard etc.) Thank you!

I have been debating between Royale cheese mall and Staunton castle for a while. Noj? You mentioned them as the best company creating the best Dubrovnik chess set, why? Is it the design, material?

@@unpavedattitudeFl you ask the right questions 👌 I got the Royal chess mall and I'm super happy with it, it is a personal taste, but you can't go wrong with any of these. Noj uses maple and walnut woods for materials for two reasons, one it that in this part of Europe (Slovenia, Croatia) it is much easier to find those woods than to import boxwood, ebony, bud rosewood or such exotic woods. I consider boxwood better choice than maple for the light pieces because it's a harder wood, also I prefer ebony over walnut for dark pieces, ebony is a pure luxury. Walnut and maple are traditionally used for the board materials. In the other hand, walnut and maple were used to make original Dubrovnik pieces since those woods were easily accessible in former Yugoslavia. So with the walnut and maple you get that historic accuracy part right, but you also get mathematicaly softer wood. Noj are doing good job, but I consider their prices are pretty high compared to the competitors. They for example do the best facial details on 1970s Dubrovnik, but at the same time the body thickness of the knight is not as good as some other companies. It seems like everyone has some problem with 1970s design, but this is really picky approach I'm doing and most of the people would never bother themselves with this tiny details. But I didn't choose to care, it has chosen me, so I can't change myself :)
The Knights and the Rooks make the Dubrovnik set...imho. my own set is the Leningrad....very nice. 🇬🇧

Great set, I have it but make no mistake, it's not an accurate rendition of 1950. The King & Queen are way too bulky, the Rook as well. The Knight, Bishop and Pawn are perfect. The others need to be trimmed down. Also, you need a 6mm board (he acknowledges such) unless you want the pieces stepping over each other. If you're hell bent on having it, get it unweighted.
I bought this set in the antiqued boxwood, and got the coffer also. It's great, nicer than the chessbazaar set I think (I have that in shesham). Did you notice a scent in the box or on the pieces? It's nice but I can't figure out if it's the materials or they added some kind of cologne! 😅 Kind of a woody scent?

Hello. Is the base of the knight lighter (color) than the upper body? I've just purchased a set of pieces and it disturbs to the eye the base being from a lighter color than the rest of the knight. Is this common? Thanks in advance!
Hello and thanks for the inquiry. Yes that can happen because the knight is made of 2 pieces of wood, so sometimes some boxwood parts can be little darker or little lighter.
@RandomChessTalk thank you very much for your answer. I have 0 experience with this kind of chess pieces. I've been playing my whole life with plastic sets. And never had the chance to see any of these in front of me. I had to rely on the internet pictures and TH-cam videos to make my choice.

How many cuts are there to the queen’s crown? I think I counted 14 on a freeze frame shot of your video. Is this accurate 14 cuts on the queen’s crown?

Do you prefer wood bottoms for the pieces or felt bottoms for the pieces? I prefer wood. It just feels nicer.

why do you prefer the ebony/boxwood, rather than the other options like mahogany/boxwood? just curious. Is there a quality reason or just personal preference?
Thanks for the question. I like them both actually. Ebony will always be ebony, in a sense it is my favourite wood for dark pieces in general. But I also bought in mahagony stain and I will do another video soon so you can see aged and vintage look with mahagony stain. I think they really nailed that specific color and polishing, they are very shiny in mahagony. Stay tuned for the video 👍

Thanks for the question. I believe Noj replica of 1950s Olympiad is also nice, the size of the Noj pieces is to some extent smaller than RCM replica, and RCM replica is bulkier, with more wood material. I personally like this RCM knight more, but you will not make a mistake with buying Noj pieces.
I used your recommendation. And I just got my Staunton Castle 1950 Dubrovnik in Boxwood and Ebony. And you were correct it is the holy grail of Dubrovnik 1950 sets.
Certainly a great choice! We should stop comparing them and just get both :) I also plan to get unweighted version from Royal chess mall to have it like Bobby Fisher did :)
@RandomChessTalk I will wait for your review of the unweighted set. I am not a fan of unweighted sets. But you may convince me to buy my first unweighted wood chess set.
@@ChessQuizToday we usually consider unweighted chess set as a less quality sets. That is because we grew up with cheap plastic unweighted sets so we get that kind of association. But unweighted Dubrovnik for sure differs from those sets because of the wide bases. I believe this is a game changer, and I really want to experience it. So count on it :)
I had ordered the same set you have the only difference to mine is that I wanted the set to be made of ebonized boxwood and the pieces to be unweighted as in the same format Bobby Fischer’s set was made and he traveled with and didn’t like to lug around with a heavy chess set. I presume your set’s total weight is roughly 3.4 lbs. The set I purchased will probably come in @ 24 ounces and I don’t mind the lightness in weight of the pieces when playing rapid type chess matches such as blitz, bullet or lighting chess games. Thanks for the feedback! I also plan to order unweighted Dubrovnik in mahagony stain to get the same feel like Bobby Fischer had. I think because of the wide bases the set will work as good as the weighted one.
@@RandomChessTalk Indeed, I already have a mahogany stained, distressed antiqued Dubrovnik by Staunton Castle that is very nicely weighed and an Ebony and natural boxwood Dubrovnik from them as well. I liked their sets so much I bought a third made of Padauk wood and it is amazingly beautiful in the wood grain structure of all the pieces. I really like the way the RCM company widened the body of the rooks which remind me of the NOJ Mincenta Dubrovnik line which I have as well equipped with DGT relays to play on my DGT Bluetooth e-board. Ever since I saw my first picture of the Dubrovnik it was love at first sight and being a player and collector I had to have several versions of this set. In addition I have a Tasmanian blackwood Dubrovnik I obtained from the House of Staunton which was actually my first purchase of the Dubrovniks I own. FYI.

I have the set and the knights fall of the base easily and i hate it noj set is way better but harder to find
In which way they fall of the base? When you accidentally knock them while playing or? I don't have any bad experience with this set.
