A tip for players who like to make realistic planes is to keep steering help to faking a struggle to control at higher speed (you should use this more for older planes then newer planes)!
Another tip: having helicopter motors in the plane can create "fake" momentum (pitch, roll & yaw) and spin the plane, if you can hide it, it can visually work
I am always glad to see more Trailmakers on the channel! One suggestion I would offer to anyone trying to build a fast hovercraft is to disable air control on your seat because it tries to roll with A/D rather than yaw. Also having your control surfaces on top of your vehicle will make it roll when you turn left or right because they're above the center of mass. What I would generally do is use 2 of the smaller fins, one above, one below, but on the same steering hinge or whatever.
thanks, scrapman I really needed this video. as a kind of old viewer of the channel I see you have been trying some slightly new things lately. I'm liking these, keep up the good work👍
5:4617:00 This is exacly the reason you wanna use steering hinge with steering help all the way into the 100% so you can have gentle controlls while flying faster and more maneuverability when you slow down. Its a way to go. I use steering hinges on all of my planes.
Notable mention: Sensors hooked directly to thrusters somehow can work very well, which means you can literally connect a sensor pointed down to a thruster and you have yourself a pretty good hovercraft which will rapidly pulse instead of getting in a feedback loop! However, you have to use gymbal or small thrusters, as those don't get stronger over time. You also can't connect the sensors indirectly up to the thrusters and it will work much better when on a suspension with dampening and stiffness on 0.
Nice. Thanks for the great insight! Very helpful to see the values (angle, strength, etc.) you used. I wish Trailmakers would help in creating flying vehicles by showing center of mass and center of lift by putting semi-transparent crosshairs there (see main assembly) (would be relatively easy for them to do, impossible for the user to calculate in a block environment with non-perfect physics). I hope the devs keep at it and add some badly needed useful new stuff (after that they can play with decals ;)), like making everything that just exists in chunky blocks (can't build some things in reasonable dimensions due to that and can't build it big due to the 700 block limit) available as 1x1x1 (e.g. servos).
This video helps so much, I thought using helicopter engines where harder to program for pitch and yaw but it's very simple, I'll definitely be using them more often now
I just started playing and I had no idea the wings and rudder would function on their own. Through trial-and-error, I built ailerons and pivoting elevators with the limited parts I had. The plane works great, but it's more complex than necessary. Along with a few other vehicles, I have almost finish finding all the parts in the Stranded Campaign. Without referencing any outside help, I created a scout plane, various land, air, and water retrieval vehicles, and a submarine I'm rather proud of. This is the first video that I have watched on how to make vehicles. I've heard your name referenced numerous times in TH-cam videos. Thanks for putting this up.
fun fact: when me and my friend made an aircraft, steering help actually does help with control. 0 steering help makes it lag before abruptly changing direction
It depends on what you want - if you want a plane to control more slowly at high speeds like a real plane then steering help is useful, but if you want something that's just ridiculously maneuverable you can turn it off. But also keep in mind that larger wings on larger planes are harder to move through the air in roll especially so you might need more control authority the faster you go, not less, to achieve the same maneuverability.
@@beaclaster Sounds like you have the angle set too high. Even with 100% steering help it will eventually get to full deflection which explains why it would flip out after a moment.
Thats funny... blue angels are a sort of respectful copy of the original stunt formation flyers, the red arrows... which is a name more suitable to your nice red stunt plane. :) Also your derpy initial helicopter example with the propeller makes me think of woody's opinion of buzz lightyear's flight capability. "That's just falling with style!" Hehe
Hi Scrapman, i just finished building my big plane in trailmakers. It's a big "cargo" plane that has a working autopilot. It flies straight and really nice without using helicopter engines or gimbals. It's also possible to controll the angle of the autopilot. Thanks for making all the amazing content, i bought trailmakers and scrap mechanic because of your videos! If you are interested in the plane the full name on the workshop is "KLM Plane (X & Y Autopilot)" by "roelieboy204"
However, there is a reason scrap mechanic and IoD are used occasionally: Scrap mechanic has a designated bearing part, and mechanical contraptions are far easier to make there, plus it has tools like the welding tool that make it easier to plan out and construct those kings of creations Instruments of destruction now is mainly used for weapon designs, for obvious reasons; but it also has rope parts, chain parts, and other parts that neither scrap mechanic nor trail-makers have, and allows things like the trebuchet to be built in IoD where it was barely, if at all possible in scrap mechanic and trail-makers.
Actually a super helpful video. Since, I got Trailmakers because of you, kAN, and Kosmo/Moonbo. But all u could make was functional cars. Now I know how to make the other things
Thank you 😊. Helps out a beginner. I have been watching you for a while and never thought you would do a tutorial but you are really good at explaining things nice work 👍.
day 43 of asking scrapman to do a multiplayer where everyone starts at the crashed ship with a craftbot already at the mechanic station and everyone has 30 minutes to build a vehicle from scratch, no glitches, thrusters allowed, after which everyone meets up and races along some road
Day 3 of asking: I recently watched your video on making a plane in trail makers using wedges for wings and that made me wonder if you could make a helicopter using the same methods. I think that would be a really cool video idea that I'd definitely like to see!
That plane only worked because thrust + aerial control = flight, the wedges weren't doing any lifting at all. Sadly that means you can't use wedges as rotors for a helicopter. But you can use regular wings, and you can even have them adjustable pitch with spinning servos so you can control how much lift you have (like the collective control in a real helicopter.)
You always turn steering help all the way down. I've experimented with it a bit, and actually find it really helpful since I'm on keyboard and can't control the responsiveness. If I'm driving a car at high speeds, I don't want the steering to be as responsive as if I were driving at low speeds, otherwise I'll lose controll or roll. The same goes for other creations as well. Tapping the buttons helps, but the input is still much faster and will eventually make the creation lose control. Adjusting the steering help helps a lot and gives me more control. You should try experimenting with it a bit
I am redownloading this game after taking a break for a year or so, I had actually played through the campaign, and most of my builds were "dumb looking" lol, I went for mainly functionality than appearance. But I will admit there are some REALLY nice builds out there!
On the helicopter fit servos on the side then angle sensor then helicopter engines and double up on the other side. By setting up the angle sensors to keep balanced the servos hold u in a position.
Bro you saved my life. Spent the last few hours getting parts for a plane that i went to sandbox to build 😂 Also thank you for such a noob friendly video 🤣
You little hovercraft - firstly great ideas with the wings. No tyre frictions? Air friction instead! Hehe but, i think you should extend it to include horizintal stabilisation as well, it should help to avoid the front corner dipping into a turn so much.
I have done that before, and it works quite well except for the fact that your wings are onl as long as the helicopter blade, and if you want ailerons you have to turn your whole wing so it is not the most practical
ScrapMan, you and the boys should do a "minimalist" build similar to this for a multiplayer monday. Smallest build grid glider, car, heli, plane, whatever. Would be pretty solid

On the hovercraft, could you instead make the hover pads rotate slightly for propulsion? Do the physics work like that? Or would you just drive into the ground? Lol
Thanks a trillion, now I can make planes too! heh my closest thing to a flying vehicle prior is a car that has upward thrust in a way that it is absolute balance of thrust (Hold button and it goes straight up on the grid map) I must say, that very vehicle pretty much sololed any non-exploding scrap on the lost in space gamemode (where I made it) lol
