Nice overview, but (at least for me) the real question is: is it worth buying a newer generation basic M chip or better buy an older generation M chip Max/Ultra? That's nearly nowhere to find. Sure, the M3 is better than the M2 but if I would compare an M2 Max/Ultra against an M3 / M3 Pro, which would be best for (insert personal use case here)?

Hi Lukas, that is very true. May I know what is that you will be using the Mac for. For instance an M4 chip today outperforms the M2 Pro chip in many tasks. But same would not be case for some tasks in comparison to M2 Max and that sheer GPU cores on that chip. It will come to what applications would you be using most.

@ I need a MacBook Pro for photo editing, 4K video editing/rendering effects and code development in python and c++. My current MBP 2018 with an intel i7 and AMD gpu is a little slow on that. A friend has a MBP with M1 Max and does similar tasks on his Mac and he told me it is fine but it already feels a bit slow here and there. What would you recommend? As a student I don’t want to buy a to powerful Mac for my tasks as budget is more on the tight side. Thanks!

Thanks for sharing that Lukas. The M1 Max MacBook Pro is plenty power, so I am unsure what areas would your friend find its limitation. I can understand there may be a RAM limitation in few application. To give you a context, MKBHD uses that chip in 16 inch MacBook Pro for his 8K Raw video edits which he claimed in many videos is enough and he never felt the need to upgrade. On my channel in early days even for 4K edits M1 MacBook Air 8GB was snappy with upto 2-3 layers of timeline. Only plugins and animations were terribly slow on it. So for your use case a refurbished M2 Pro with higher RAM 16 or higher, or M3 Pro will be enough. Max chips will be overkill if you aren’t using Blender or high level GPU applications.

First thing first M1 MBA may already serve you purposes, but in case you want to futureproof a bit:
Assume your 4K video editing and code development is on the lighter side, pick cheapest macbook with 16GB RAM, probably M2 air
If you are sure that your tasks will make yourself money, get M1 Max base if it is around $2000, else M4 pro base
*Most RAM, SSD and processor chip upgrades are daylight robbery. Avoid that as much as possible.

Hi, thank you for engaging here. M3 has 60% higher neural engine capabilities than M1 as published by Apple. M1’s neural engine is at 11 TOPs hence M3 is typically at 17.6 by that logic. Around 18 TOPs. Reputable websites like Anand tech also have the same published.

      Hope this helps clear it.
