  • I am reviewing cerulean blue, a beautiful watercolour paint from Daniel Smith in this art material review video. Daniel Smith has two cerulean blues. This is the non-chromium version.
In this review series I share colour swatches of watercolour paints that I have and how I use them in ink and wash sketch of shopfronts that I have sourced from Pinterest.

I love all the little buildings you paint. I'm here for those more than the colors, lol. I have 80 something Daniel Smith colors so I know pretty much how they all work. No, I don't use all of them. I have a main palette of Daniel Smith and Qor (their blues are cleaner and move vivid), a secondary palette of Daniel Smith, a palette each of Sennelier, Holbein and Mission Gold. My main palette also has two Winsor & Newton colors and one M Graham. The secondary palette also contains some Davinci and another M Graham. My Mission Gold is both sets of the pure pigment line. I have these palettes for the specific things they bring to the table and I only use a few, usually no more than six colors per painting, each time. I simply love color!

@@eurekawanders Actually I would say it's a tie between Daniel Smith and Qor for favorite brand and my top ten...
By order of color in my palette
      1. Trans. Pyrrol Orange (Qor)
      2. Anthraquinoid Red (DS)
      3. Quin Coral (DS)
      4. Indanthrone Blue ( Any brand, lol) I have DS, M Graham but so want Qor if ever comes back in stock)
      5. Nickel Azo ( DS)
      6. Green Gold (Qor)
      7. Cobalt Teal (Qor)
      8. Monte Amiata Sienna Nat. (DS)
      9. Quin Deep Gold (Qor)
      10. Naphthamide Maroon (DS)
Also, I'm not a big fan of Quin. Magenta but I absolutely love Qor's. There is also Sodalite, Diopside and Serpentine for my Genuines that I also love. Only 10 is too hard, lol.

Thank you so much for this video! It has helped me choose cerulean blue over cerulean blue chromium. I had not been able to see the color in a panting so this was very helpful. Have you poured out the cerulean blue paint into a half pan? If you have, do you think it is easy to rewet?

Hello! You are welcome! Yes I use the paint in a half pan. I am not sure if I had a bad tube but the binder had separated from the pigment in mine. It’s a little hard to rewet but it’s not an issue. I could still paint from it.

@@eurekawanders Yes, I've seen people mention the binder separating from the pigment. I think I read somewhere that it's common with cobalt pigments. I appreciate your response; I feel a bit better buying it now knowing that it rewets just fine. I have a couple Daniel Smith colors, and if I’m being honest their formula is not my favorite. When poured into pans it shrinks much more than any other watercolor brand I’ve used, and it feels sort of plasticky. But they have some unique colors and their granulating colors are so beautiful. I love granulation. Thanks again! You have lovely art by the way. I followed on Instagram because I love your style. Hope you have a nice day!

Thanks for the follow on Instagram!! :) what’s your account? The colours I have from Daniel Smith colours rewet just fine. Can’t say the same for Kusakabe. There were a few colours that had dried so well that I could just take the piece out of the pan. 😕

I love Daniel Smith’s primatek colours! Amazing granulation. If you love granulation you should consider Schmincke granulating watercolours too.

@@eurekawanders I'll leave a message on your latest picture, so you know it's me :) I don't ever post I just use it to see cool art from people and get inspired. I think climate probably plays a big part. I live in a super dry climate so I'm sure that doesn't help the Daniel Smith paints. I prefer honey-based paints for this reason, they're just easier to rewet. I've never heard of the Kusakabe brand but that's exactly what happened to a couple of Daniel Smith paints I own. Their Primatek colors are so cool.
I wish I could but they're much too expensive! Actually, I was originally going to buy Cobalt Azure from Schmincke because I got a half pan a couple years ago and it's so beautiful, but it's too expensive so Daniel Smith Cerulean Blue is my next choice. I did see on your latest post the Deepsea Blue and it's so gorgeous. That granulation is amazing.
