- I found this computer in a trash pile on the footpath. It was previously used in a tool truck, similar to a Snap On truck. It has oil and grease on the side panel and a lot of dust inside.
Does it work? What CPU is in it? Let's find out!
My town in the USA has a once-yearly "clean-up" day in the spring where we can get rid of large stuff like furniture and appliances. Usually the scrappers grab the metal before the collection trucks arrive. However, electronics are not allowed and will be skipped. Those have to be taken to special collection depots or the charity resale stores.
I just found this channel today and funnily enough I also found an abandoned pc with the 1156 socket recently. It has an i7 860 and a rally nice asus board. I think a cap in the psu exploded as the whole thing was covered in an oily residue. It worked after I swapped the psu and added ram and a graphics card. I ended up installing a fork of templeOS on it for the memes but Ill probably end up going with arch just to tinker with
Those specs would enable that rig to run windows 10, albeit only for basic uses, specially if you optimize it. Windows 10 has streamlined a lot since the early days. Great video
1156 last intel cpu socket you can fsb overclock on in any larger steps with locked cpus.
(Though this motherboard is scraping the bottom of the barrel on the vrm by the looks of things, probably wont do much over stock on most processors for the socket.)
Technically some newer boards could do it with an external clock generator to isolate pci-e etc...
But these boards are pretty expensive for that ability to the point where buying an unlocked cpu is cheaper.
Could make a good Windows Vista & Windows 10 dualboot machine tbh with a gpu like a gtx 750 non ti 1 gb & a quadcore I5 750 or equivalent intel 1156 xeon with a light overclock.
Any cpu cooler that fits 115x,socket 1200 works on 1156 so plenty of cpu cooler options out there both used & new.
This board probably wont do anything past like 3.3 ghz out of an I5 750 which stock is like 2.8 ghz.
Can go down to windows xp if you want to but eh I'd say ddr2 era systems is better suited there like a core 2 quad, core 2 duo etc...
I like your videos. Maybe a little homemade NAS with SSDs. With all the drive bays you might be able to get raid 5 with a hot swap but not sure what the motherboard would cope with.
CEX sell cheap cpus. Drop a $5 quadcore in there and it would do wonders.
Don't know what prices are like elsewhere, but CEX (UK) sell the i5-750 for 10p and the i7-870 for £8 .... Do aliexpress have 1156 Xeons? ... X3450 is very reasonable, but the price skyrockets by the 3470/3480

Retro is worth some money, which this isn't. Of course, I would've picked it up anyway, I'm a confessed hoarder of computer hardware.
