Same greybeard with 400 hours here, this time defending the Bulldog. Yes, it’s another simple gun similar to the Driller's Subata, but this time I’m not defending its reliability - I’m defending its per-shot damage. All of the Gunner's primary options revolve around the rapid-fire trope of using lots of ammo that individually deal a low amount of damage. The Bulldog, by comparison, deals all of its payload in one shot. When fighting Dreadnoughts, I often find myself shredding the armour with a purpose-built minigun or autocannon, then switching to the revolver to put lots of damage out before the dreadnought heals up. Its quick reload time is also a boon, but since I use the Elephant Rounds overclock (3 bullets per chamber and slower reload but MUCH more damage) and the Always Ready perk (not equipping a weapon for 5 seconds reloads it) this is less of a factor for my playstyle.
BRT shares the Bulldog's utility of a quick reload and can be built to have massive pools of ammo. Don’t forget, you can be down in those caves a long time, especially during Deep Dives, so a reliable sidearm lets you save ammo for serious threats like Oppressors or Nemeses.
I love the bulldog. With the build that I have, it can often one-shot a few types of glyphids! Basic ones go down in one shot to the face. Armored ones take one, plus a pickaxe swing. Web spitters fall in one shot without aiming. It's a beast.
One thing you missed: the zipline anchors have a surprisingly bright light on them, meaning they can be used to illuminate an area like a budget version of the scout's flaregun.
Throw the shield at an ammo drop so everyone can re-supply in peace. Also you’ll be getting 2 more Shields, so if you’ve got 3 or 4 left might aswell use them.
I love seeing green beards it means this game is getting love it deserves. Pro tips shoot Pretoria mouths to get past armor if not running armor shedding, and his sheild is one of the highest skill ceiling items in the game, Imo. Use it wisely. Rock and stone miners.

I’d say gunner has some of the best secondary’s! I use them to cover my primaries weakness. Since I also primarily use the auto cannon and it struggles at hitting smaller, long range enemies accurately and quickly. So the revolver is like my pocket sniper or it allows me to quickly kill bigger enemies like praetorians/oppressors while staying mobile and not having to wait for the primary to spin up
Bulldog also has an overclock that makes it deal quad damage to burning targets and given Gunner has several ways to set bugs on fire, it’s very nice. Plus coilgun in general is just kinda broken.
BRT feels like an excellet close range weapon. It deals more damage than the Bulldog if you land all three shots and can be upgraded to go beyond that. It can absolutely shred some enemies like Praetorians and even Hiveguards with the hollow point bullets, but I often use the extra ammo since its either 40% more damage when hitting a specific part on an enemy, or 50% more damage before you have to resupply.
Do you ever really run dry as a gunner? Feels like every other class will need the resupply earlier than you do, so ammo economy is not much of a concern.
Just started playing and BOY this is such a helpful guide! I am a very new greenbeard and I am drawn to the Gunner as its pretty simple for beginners and is a good way to go for the learning phase I think. This will make me not just drag down the team haha! just an fyi if you're having trouble playing gunner or any class that doesn't just click in your mind try playing with it solo with or without bossco doesn't really matter but without him you will learn your and the classes limits really fast, plus you also get to develop your game sense as well so remember solo's always there
On the BRT, if you build it right, it can absolutely shred anything with weak spots. It great to shred a praetorian’s armor with his primary and then shred them extremely quickly with the BRT
I would be intrested in seeing your opinion on the Bullet Hell overclock for the minigun. I'm a pretty seasoned player, and I think it may be the genuinely best overclock for the weapon. Here's the skinny of it: Take the first level upgrade that improves your accuracy, the one that makes the minigun basically an assault rifle in terms of its spread. Also grab the more ammo upgrade. Built it how you like other than also choosing the stun rounds and Bullet Hell. What you've effectively done is turned it into an AOE weapon. 75% of your bullets now bounce and strike the nearest enemy within 6m... regardless of what you just hit. Terrain, enemies, allies... The second the bullet hits, it auto paths to the nearest valid hostile target. Fun fact, if you get blow through rounds, the bullet is CLONED, not redirected, so one homes into the nearest enemy, the other goes straight the hell through like normal. This can deal double damage... BUt who cares? This means you shoot the ground BEHIND the oppressor or Dreadnaught and kill them anyways :D Also, on the lead storm (and all guns, but its most notable on the lead storm) you can skip most of the reload animation. As soon as the ammo counter resets, right click. YOu'll pull out your pick, interrupting the animation but not the reload. This saves you about 50% of the time for reloading on the lead storm.
I'm sure someone mentioned this... The BRT7 secondary weapon is a great submachine weapon, capable of shredding bosses HP and acts as a DMG phase weapon when desired
I think the secondaries make a lot of sense when paired with their respective primaries. The minigun shreds through enemies close up with lots of low dmg rounds, bit you'll struggle to hit enemies at range with it, so the revolver packs a lot of damage in a few shots that has really good range. Same with the auto cannon dealing high explosive damage, but because it's explosive you'll avoid hitting enemies right in front of you so you have a high dps burst pistol for any bug dumb enough to get in your face.
I'd say driller and gunner are best at escort, driller and engi are best at refinery, scout and engi are best at point extraction and all of them are alright on egg hunt and mining.
this series was some of the first deep rock content i consumed. i now have almost 500 hours in this wonderful game, and consider it my favourite as of right now.

From my experience - gunner shield block projectiles coming in - so you and alley can not shot or throw across the shield - only from inside out. It does matter with some long distance weapons like engineers laser.

As a new player i must say i enjoy the driller as my first pick. Couldnt decide between gunner and engie and knew scout was too high of a learning curve for me. Was a natural support for team plays so this class just fit 😎
New Gunner here, one tip i do have for ziplines: quickest and easing extraction runs. With the super awkward pathing the game makes for objects (and these Lithophage meteors boring a deep wide hole) there's chances the MULE we follow break off the easy path and go up a 90° degree incline to reach an escape pod where nobody can reach the exits and have to fend for themselves with multiple detours. I use ziplines to bridge gaps from drop pod and cutdown times it would take to get out. Anchoring a web in a single level chamber is utterly useless unless tou have alot of spare Nitra to resupply which is very inefficient. Just make someone's job easier by making ziplines going down a breeze and impossible climbs easier by avoiding obstacles and removing terrain that gets in the way. Also, making a zipline trial also marks the path to and from objects so the best way to tell which way you went is significantly easier to traverse the complexity of caves. But that depends on where your exit drop pod arrives at so it a roll of the doce.
I have 1500 hours in this game. Your beginner guide is very good. I like the bulldog for its very high per-shot damage and I like the burt for up close face shots.
2 leadbursters with the right terrain and placement will ALWAYS kill a bulk on vanilla difficulties. This is insanely useful in situations where ammo's tight or your team's not kitted out for bulk killing.
I could see Veteran Depositor being a good perk for this class - if you're job is to make a safe place for mates to come back to, it might as well also be some place with Molly on hand. Plus if Molly is with the slowest Dwarf on the team, she's within easy reach of everyone.
A few things, autocannon is, imo while absolutely great against swarms, is also one of the least useful weapons vs bigger enemies. Also secondaries, gunner has some of the best secondaries, brrt and revolver both can potentially outperform primaries vs big enemies, and coilgun has great utility.
I disagree with your sentiment about the gunner secondaries, they are some of the strongest in the game. The bulldog is powerful because of its versatility and simplicity, useful in almost any situation. The BRT can have the highest burst dps in the game, so I wouldn't discount it either.

former gunner main here, the shield generator is one of the most handy support tools in my opinion. it will save missions when things start to heat up. wether its getting really crowded and you need some personal space, or you need to quickly revive a teammate without bugs on your back, its the perfect way to stay protected while unloading all your ammunition into giant arthropods. ziplines are useful, you just have to use them correctly. dont use them willy-nilly like the grappling hook, if its a small ledge youre probably better off just digging up with your pickaxe (bring ammo mod if it helps). and if your playing with other people, the engineer or driller probably have those small ledges taken care of already. the other classes arent as good at scaling a big ledge or crevasse and brining your team with (scout can traverse well but it doesnt necessarily help the team out). ive since started to enjoy engineer more, but gunner is still my 2nd best pick.
I use ledstorm with maximum accuaracy and maximum speed loadout and overclock. This is the right way. I use heating to burn enemies with my bullets when over 50%>
egg hunts with the gunner become a speedrun. Big cave, six eggs. Zipline 1, Zipline 2, Zipline 3, th fourth egg is on the ground, you split up each taking one, and you suddenly got 4/6 in less than a minute.
Not gonna lie, your minigun build is a bit odd. On tier 1, most people run accuracy, or sometimes fire rate. Heat buildup isn't very fast compared to other overheat weapons (unless you're running Burning Hell, then by all means take faster cooling), so heat management is rather easy, especially if you're running Cold as the Grave on tier 5. Since you're running Exhaust Vectoring, you should definitely be running accuracy to offset the accuracy penalty from the OC. One of the biggest strengths of the gun is its accuracy at long ranges, so losing that seems counterproductive. I'll add that you should probably pick accuracy on tier 1 of the Bulldog too, it helps a ton. In tier 4, you haven't even unlocked the best mod, Variable Chamber Pressure, which is even more strange considering you recommend Feedback Loop for the autocannon just a few minutes later. Lighter Barrel Assembly is pretty nice for quality of life, and can be a good pick for some builds (e.g. Burning Hell), but isn't strictly necessary. Magnetic Bearings is definitely the least useful mod on tier 4. Don't sleep on Aggressive Venting on tier 5, either. It can be strong alternative to Cold as the Grave for heat management, as it sets everything on fire in a 10m radius, with 100% chance of fear, in addition to cutting the overheat duration in half. Great for high hazard levels, and any missions where you're gonna be getting up close and personal with large swarms, not to mention being a very strong combo with the Bulldog with Volatile Bullets. That said, all of the mods on tier 5 are quite good, and come down to personal preference, build synergy, and hazard level. I also recommend running Lightning Trail on most builds on the coil gun (Hellfire being the exception, take AoE instead). Necro-Thermal Catalyst needs setup, and requires either taking heat on your primary weapon, or a reliable heat source from a teammate. But in that case you might as well run Volatile Bullets Bulldog anyway, it's way better.
Hey Javarak! Question: The perk "Born Ready", does this affect the gunners leadstorm heat buildup? (Immediate complete cooldown of the gun after 5 seconds?)
No disrespect to Gunner mains... But no matter what, in a team of 4, I'd rather see a second scout, driller, or engie. It just kind of feels like they can all do as good or better of a job. Bubble shield is nice, i guess.
There are a few little mistakes in this video, but they arent bad enough to really warrant corrections and they are understandable as you seem like a greenbeard yourself. However, for the missions... Elimination is OK for gunner but Engineers and Scouts have easier time dealing with Dreadnaughts in general. Egg hunts in reality has almost the least amount of swarms than any other gamemode. Why? Because first of all, you dont get random swarms, only triggered swarms from the eggs. The swarm amount is 3 for 8 eggs, 2 for 6 eggs, or 1 for 4 eggs. And ofcourse, Point Extration is the only one where Gunner is warranted because sometimes the generation of the cave sucks and its just easier to haul the Aquarks on a zip.
Bruh some of these takes are really bad and some are really good for beginners. Wouldn't dog on his secondarys too hard when they are all really powerful when you pair it with the right Loadout
True, he doesn't see the use in secondaries being good for weak spots. If you have any kind of fire on your primary, then you can put weak spot bonus and volatile bullets into your bulldog and one shot praetorians. But I guess the bulldog isn't really good at anything anyways.

The only type of mission the gunner needs help is liquid morkite extraction because he can only use his pickaxe to make path for the pipe.

I use ledstorm with maximum accuaracy and maximum speed loadout and overclock. This is the right way. I use heating to burn enemies with my bullets when over 50%>

egg hunts with the gunner become a speedrun. Big cave, six eggs. Zipline 1, Zipline 2, Zipline 3, th fourth egg is on the ground, you split up each taking one, and you suddenly got 4/6 in less than a minute.

Not gonna lie, your minigun build is a bit odd. On tier 1, most people run accuracy, or sometimes fire rate. Heat buildup isn't very fast compared to other overheat weapons (unless you're running Burning Hell, then by all means take faster cooling), so heat management is rather easy, especially if you're running Cold as the Grave on tier 5. Since you're running Exhaust Vectoring, you should definitely be running accuracy to offset the accuracy penalty from the OC. One of the biggest strengths of the gun is its accuracy at long ranges, so losing that seems counterproductive. I'll add that you should probably pick accuracy on tier 1 of the Bulldog too, it helps a ton.
In tier 4, you haven't even unlocked the best mod, Variable Chamber Pressure, which is even more strange considering you recommend Feedback Loop for the autocannon just a few minutes later. Lighter Barrel Assembly is pretty nice for quality of life, and can be a good pick for some builds (e.g. Burning Hell), but isn't strictly necessary. Magnetic Bearings is definitely the least useful mod on tier 4.
Don't sleep on Aggressive Venting on tier 5, either. It can be strong alternative to Cold as the Grave for heat management, as it sets everything on fire in a 10m radius, with 100% chance of fear, in addition to cutting the overheat duration in half. Great for high hazard levels, and any missions where you're gonna be getting up close and personal with large swarms, not to mention being a very strong combo with the Bulldog with Volatile Bullets. That said, all of the mods on tier 5 are quite good, and come down to personal preference, build synergy, and hazard level.
I also recommend running Lightning Trail on most builds on the coil gun (Hellfire being the exception, take AoE instead). Necro-Thermal Catalyst needs setup, and requires either taking heat on your primary weapon, or a reliable heat source from a teammate. But in that case you might as well run Volatile Bullets Bulldog anyway, it's way better.

Hey Javarak! Question: The perk "Born Ready", does this affect the gunners leadstorm heat buildup? (Immediate complete cooldown of the gun after 5 seconds?)
I don't believe it does but I would have to check to know for sure.

But no matter what, in a team of 4, I'd rather see a second scout, driller, or engie.
It just kind of feels like they can all do as good or better of a job.

There are a few little mistakes in this video, but they arent bad enough to really warrant corrections and they are understandable as you seem like a greenbeard yourself.
However, for the missions...
Elimination is OK for gunner but Engineers and Scouts have easier time dealing with Dreadnaughts in general.
Egg hunts in reality has almost the least amount of swarms than any other gamemode. Why? Because first of all, you dont get random swarms, only triggered swarms from the eggs. The swarm amount is 3 for 8 eggs, 2 for 6 eggs, or 1 for 4 eggs.
And ofcourse, Point Extration is the only one where Gunner is warranted because sometimes the generation of the cave sucks and its just easier to haul the Aquarks on a zip.

I'm not really sure. Sorry but I haven't had that issue personally. But I'm sure if you look someone else has had the issue too and found a fix.
Bruh some of these takes are really bad and some are really good for beginners.
Wouldn't dog on his secondarys too hard when they are all really powerful when you pair it with the right Loadout
True, he doesn't see the use in secondaries being good for weak spots. If you have any kind of fire on your primary, then you can put weak spot bonus and volatile bullets into your bulldog and one shot praetorians. But I guess the bulldog isn't really good at anything anyways.
One question. How do you get new guns?
Keep playing the class and level it up and eventually you will be able to do the assignment to unlock them.
