My sister got papers too when she adopted her greyhound and this pup won a lot of her races. I was very happy they mentioned senior as well because I was one of those that thought they were highly active. Your right. A regular couch potato.

Number 10 The Maltese would have been my first pick. I've had them and they, among all dogs I have ever known or had, are very aware of staying out from underfoot. Yes, that is right, they are very aware of where your feet are ( I wonder if it's because I pet them with my feet while I'm crocheting or busy Channel surfing; Alas No, they actually are known for it) - once they're out of puppyhood that is - and will stay away, but you should teach them early on, just to make sure. Even if it means kicking back with your heel a little bit when they try to pounce on it. But that only lasts a couple of months -if that... which makes them very good for old folks, they won't get tripped up because of the dog.
They are very bright and very quick learners, and love to please - just be very sweet to them and use positive reinforcement and maybe a sharp "Ah-Ah" or you can totally ruin their very sweet dispositions. They will hold a grudge, they won't do anything ornery on purpose to get you back, but they will remember, and be very wary of being near you. So if you want a sweet pocket pooch or lap lingerer, then be sweet, and you will have a sweet pooch but loves to be near you. They are independent enough to be able to tolerate life without you while you're at work. Crate training is the best and since they are small and have very small bladders you should take them out every couple of hours and follow the advice given. I'm taking them outside immediately after eating, to the same patch of grass where they have done their potty before.
They are very fastidious, and do stay clean and don't get a smelly smell that some breeds do. They are not known to be diggers or chewers. They love to chew on cow hooves, though I always give these as well as smoked pig ears, beef bones, bully bones, & buffalo horns to my dogs that are medium to large breeds, from the smallish Jack Russell terriers to the guard type dogs. To the Maltese I give cow hooves and smoked & basted pork bones. Some of my Maltese never did do much chewing as puppies, and often times with Maltese you must pull their milk teeth out so their permanent ones can have room. You must keep a check on that. And another thing, they live a really long time. So brush their teeth so they don't get dental disease and blood infections from it. I had a male that lived to 19 years.

I'd go with a more low energy guard dog, something like an English Mastiff or a bullmastiff. The look of them alone would put any would be intruder off plus they both adore their owners.

If you pick a low key American Staffordshire Terrier or a low-key Boxer from a litter, they can learn to be bored and mellow, but they can also in a heartbeat be ready to get up and go and do whatever you're doing. They will follow you around the house and they will guard the bathroom door against any and all comers; they may also lead the way through the house to check and see that there are no bogeymen, and that it's okay for you to walk in,because they're guarding over you and your home. They are on the job. It is their solemn and heartsworn duty to do so. Both breeds are alert and wary, they must be taught sociability early on so that they can know what nice people are, that way should a bad person with malintent in their heart be near, they will certainly do something about it by either separating you or sitting in between or barking warning for them to get the heck away or else. The Boxer in particular is great at herding, so your dog may try to herd you away from something that they are aware of... hopefully you have sense enough to follow her directions on, because they are omniscient. They just KNOW things. They are keenly intuitive and are independent thinkers... if you don't tell them what to do because you are unaware of what needs to be done - believe me, oh, they know what to do and they will take care of it. They will even stamp out a tossed, still lit cigarette butt if there is a child near that could be harmed by it, especially if it is THEIR child, that they have [taken] charge of (say, your grandbaby)? My Boxers have stepped in front of me, and herded me away from uneven sections of concrete that have acted like tectonic plates that form mountain ranges in the sidewalk or when walking across grass and there is a low spot in the yard, one will steer me around it. A Boxer will even protect a guest that has been allowed in your house before - especially if said person was the dog sitter while you were on vacation.
The American Staffordshire Terrier is the one who will enter the house before you, and inspect it to see if it is safe for you; you can train a Boxer to do it, but whereas the Boxer is omniscient, the American Staffordshire Terrier is aware if there is actually a problem, but it is the one who has OCD, in that they will not assume they know what they think they know . They will go check every blade of grass when they're outside and they will check every carpet fiber when you are coming in the house after a walk or vet visit or when entering another room of the house. My Amstaff, even though they say don't let your dog walk ahead of you, you must lead, and all this other kind of stuff cuz you always have to be the boss and blah blah, but, in his one thing I allowed her to walk ahead of me because I wanted to see what she was doing. Sure enough, it is just an organic thing...she would walk in and inspect everything making sure it was okay for me to go in there, and then she would look at me as if to say, " 'kay Mom, it's all yers", and then turn her back to me - not ignoring me - but protecting me from all comers that may pass that threshold.

What's funny? The fact that they can barely breathe. Yes that's absolutely hilarious.

I think if I see one more idiot pushing corgis as a dog for seniors I'll scream. I have one and my sister(86) has had two. These are working dogs. They are born and bred to spent all day herding cattle or sheep. They're bred to bark and nip at the laggers. They blow their coats twice a year but also shed constantly. Yes, they are cute and adorable but definitely NOT for older people. They are strong, active animals that need a job or they get into all kinds of trouble.
