They'll go with the flow and bring something new, they're not in a hurry though. Keep in mind, in terms of sheer production numbers, Honda cranks out in a few days what Triumph does in a year (not kidding).

I’ve been looking for something like this scrambler.
The Big 4 do a lot of bikes but the retro beginner bikes most aren’t sold everywhere like Honda with the 350s for example.
      Yamaha could do a XSR 300 ?
(They do a XSR125 here in Europe which has 14hp)
The choices for naked or sports bikes are plenty but a beginner scrambler I’m struggling to find new ones.
We got the Scram411 or the SCL500

Don't really care what Japan needs to do, Triumph, BMW, KTM and RE are already there. And they are not necessarily "beginner" bikes, whatever that means nowadays. There's a difference between "beginner" and "beginner-friendly."

I would never buy another Triumph because of poor quality control. Japanese motorcycles don't have to catch up to Triumph. Japanese motorcycles crush Triumph in most metrics but in particular, the most important one, reliability.
Pro tip: Don't waste your money on one of these India made Triumphs with no power. Find a barely used mid power Japanese motorcycle off Craigslist for less money that will actually shift and start after the warranty runs out. Triumph's poor record on quality is inexcusable.
Any questions....google it. Transmission failures are the most notable and Triumph dealers never stand behind their products because they know they are bad.

If I didn't already own a Trident 660, then I would buy one. But the style is too similar. However, if they eventually release a 500 cc cafe racer, then I would buy it.

Most of the time they just don't have a choice but there are also dealers taking advantage of people. If a dealer just charged MSRP they'd go out of business. The manufacturers make these mandates and the dealers have to find a solution to pay for it.

@@SirNarax If that is the case, then either- the MSRP is simply wrong, or the dealer doesn't know how to manage their business. I don't know of a single person that has ever said- "Hey Since that dealer is right there I guess I will go buy a beginner bike(or any bike for that matter)". NOBODY Thinks that way. I think this is a smart move for Triumph. I'm sure some manufacturer or marketing firm has done studies about the percentage of people who buy the same brand for their second motorcycle, and I always thought Triumph was missing out by not offering an easier entry point for new motorcyclists. My first bike was a Triumph Street Scrambler (now re-named the Scrambler 900). I got started later in life than a lot of motorcyclists, so it was not an unreasonable first bike, and at that stage in my life, I could afford it, so I didn''t need to look at the lighter, cheaper Japanese-made starter bikes. My second bike is a Tiger 900 Rally Pro, so Triumph has now had two opportunities to drain my savings account. How many more motorcycles will I buy before I get too old to enjoy them safely? I don't know, but the answer is certainly fewer than someone who buys their first bike at the age of 25. With these new 400s, Triumph not only gains access to a previously untapped market, they increase the chances of selling more of their higher=end bikes for years to come. In this modern world of short-term thinking, get-rich-quick investment schemes, and disposable consumer products, it's a hopeful sign that Triumph is thinking in terms of decades instead of just the next quarter's profits.

I think the best thing that could happen for the future of motorcycling, to get a new generation of riders on bikes, is for respectable manufacturers to start selling sub 500cc bikes direct to the customer. In the US the dealer fees are getting really out of hand. It’s hard to get any of these low displacement bikes out the door within $1000 of the price of the bike. So you’re talking like 20%+ markups. The dealers literally charge you the freight shipping to have the bike shipped to the dealership and then the dealership adds additional fees on top of that. For inexpensive bikes these fees end up being a huge portion of the overall cost of the bike. When some of us own TVs that are more expensive than the list price of the bike and we can have those TVs delivered right to our homes. If I have to pay freight shipping I want it shipped directly to my house. Let me deal with “Yamaha financing” directly. The dealership model makes sense for more expensive bikes where the fees end up being a less significant portion of the out the door cost and we do need reputable places to have bikes serviced. But I believe this is a big reason new riders in the US would rather buy a used mt07 over a new mt03. Or a used harley over a Honda rebel 500. And I believe that contributed to the unsafe reputation motorcycles have here. On lot of these small bikes the dealers are doing little to no assembly. Often times they are literally are just screwing in the mirrors and filling them with fluids. I don’t want to pay someone else hundreds of dollars for something that takes me 2 minutes to do.

These new triumphs really hit a sweet niche I feel. The performance of a modern 400, with the styling of a classic one. I honestly was expecting Kawasaki to do this first with a Z400RS, but instead Triumph beat them there. I also find it weird that Yamaha has a 125 and 700cc XSR, but nothing to bridge that gap. Honda also kinda disappoints with the CL500, you can very clearly tell it's based on the rebel, it's oddly pricey and has nothing indicating that it'll do well offroad.
Whereas the Scrambler 400x seems like it could be a much more lightweight and manageable version of the 1200cc scrambler, which is way too heavy for a "scrambler". I really quite like the idea of having a retro styled bike with ADV like capabilities, minus the wind protection.

I agree, while a 300cc motorcycle may be good for a teenager as a first bike, they are anemic at best. What adults need for a beginner motorcycle is completely different in my mind. What a beginner adult needs is a motorcycle they won’t outgrow in a month of riding. What that means is a 400-500cc bike that makes 40-50HP, can run 80 miles an hour all day long on the interstate without making you feel like your wringing it’s neck off, handle well when you hit the twistys with enough umph to make it fun, and look good doing it. This new 400 Triumph looks awesome, and if the power numbers are correct they may have just hit a home run. Honda has the Rebel based 500cc line of bikes, but let’s be honest, they are bland at best albeit reliable.

The smaller displacement market is getting more fun options, and the Triumphs will make great additions. However, I feel your point about Japanese manufactures getting complacent like Harley Davidson is spot on. People are leery about companies like CFMOTO, but they are trying their darndest to shake the stigma. For example, look at the 450SS versus the Ninja 400. You're getting a fair bit more at the same price for the CFMOTO bike in exchange for unproven longevity. Is that gonna be enough to sway someone from getting a Ninja? If I were Kawasaki(or any of the other Big 4), I'd be positioning my bikes so that it wasn't even a question. Sadly, you can look at Honda and Suzuki and see how much they have just rested on their laurels. The GSX-R 250 is not really worth mentioning in any conversation of comparison and I don't think Honda even brought back the CBR300R for the 2023 model year.
This is all USDM specific, and I know that here, motorcycles aren't seen as primary vehicles, which really does color what we do get here(along with a lot of other factors beyond the scope of discussion), but it would be nice to have some of the options that other countries get.

Especially the Svart as I like that look a lot. As far as the Japanese bikes go, the Honda 500's seem like really good beginner bikes but with the Triumph priced right around 5k, MSRP, Honda can't touch that and neither can Kawasaki. plus, there is something about that speed 400 with the giant triumph logo all loud and proud on the tank that just looks great. Fun fact, Kawasaki has a history with working with Bajaj.
They have rebadged Bajaj bikes before as their own in the Philippines. In Malaysia, Kawasaki bikes are rebadged as Modenas who also rebadges Bajaj bikes as Modenas.
It's said that Harley Davidson is making a motorcycle with Hero Motor Corp, an Indian company that has its roots being a partnership with Honda.
One must remember that unlike western manufacturers they are all just one part of a larger conglomerate. Kawasaki has Heavy Industries, Suzuki and Honda have their own cars and Yamaha makes grand pianos, electric guitars, virtual singers and when I was a kid the best sounding recorders on the market. The flute kind.
It's sad that they're just being treated as just another part of a larger corporate machine but sometimes being able to amaze enthusiasts every single day year in year out just doesn't make business sense when you're targeting a mass market audience.

I still don’t think it will ever help sell the Fury though. Why does it exist? Does anybody want one?

  • @KeViNMCMXXCIX
    @KeViNMCMXXCIX ปีที่แล้ว

There's a pretty decent coverage of 500's and 300's of Honda for example even to this day here in Europe/The Netherlands. New bike options are for example: CL500, CBR500R, CB500F, CB500X, Rebel 500, Forza and ADV 350 which are Scooters) and then there's CRF300 as well. Whilst Kawasaki has the Z and Ninja 400 of course still and Suzuki the Burgman 400 which is also a Scooter. KTM's 390 models. And BMW has G310 and the 400cc Scooters. And of course CFMoto has options and Royal Enfield as well.
So I think Triumph does made a smart move to come out with these models. Adds a nice variety in an already quite crowded option base. But they'll fit in nicely and hope they will sell a lot of em. They look real good in my opinion as well. Hope pricewise they won't be too crazy cause that might hold a lot of people back to go with different options as well.
Triumph's do have something about them which is appealing so there's always that.

Honestly, if you want sub $5k you're gonna have to find a 400cc used, or get a Honda Grom. But for used, you'll want to look at Kawasaki Z400s and Yamaha MT03s. They're popular so they're pretty easy to find used. Ninja 400s are also fairly common.

I've been looking at all the recent reviews on the new 400s from Triumph, and it looks like Triumph has really done their homework to make these bikes highly competitive in the beginner market. And that they've spent their time to make the bikes affordable, but actually putting their time into making them as good as they can.
I'd say as long as they can get the prices closer to that of Japanese offerings, then they have a lot of potential to steal business from Japan. Though, if they can't get the bikes in the low 6 grand range or less, than they might not be that much of a threat. Hard to say at the same time. If they're as well made or similar to their higher end bikes, then they might have enough exotic feel and sound to them where people are willing to spend more.
I also think the Japanese could improve - especially since Chinese are finally starting to get into the game where they can make an ok bike now. I mean, under 3 grand for a bike is amazing.
