@@humbarcam Ringo is a great listener: if you pay attention, he plays the same pattern that Paul strums on bass very early in the video. He reproduces it with drums so that Paul could actually play a bass line, taking care of the strict rhythm for him.
I have been ardent fan for 60 years and I'm only 66! We had the best music ever on the 1960s and the Beatles lead us through it all. Unique and brilliant.
@@humbarcam Oh, yes he was - well, trumpet (bought for him by his dad) , then guitar and piano if I remember correctly, all featured in his early days. I think he just took over playing bass in the Beatles after Stuart Sutcliffe died, leaving the band without a bass player. But he can and does play pretty much any instrument, I think...

The "Get Back" documentary is riveting. I've watched the whole thing twice. The band plays more than 200 songs over the 9+ hours, many of them rock 'n' roll classics. It's the closest thing to being there when the band was recording. Peter Jackson is a genius!
I love the bit in the documentary when Paul is playfully jabbing at him for not having written anything. John responded by bringing in ‘Dig a Pony’ the next day.
It's been said that you cannot trust someone who does not like the Beatles. This makes sense because even though they experienced some rough patches, way down deep inside there radiates in them, as a group and as individuals, a beautiful, pure hope for the betterment of mankind and the world.
It never fails to amaze me that through all the discord and personal angst within the band at this point, as soon as they have to perform live, they all slot right into it. Tight as a nut with perfect harmonies and the joy and telepathic understanding that goes way back to the early days. Sublime.
Totally agree, and their biggest mistake was to stop playing live together. Yes, they needed a break when they stopped touring, but they should of resumed, because they loved playing together so much!

The rooftop concert on TH-cam is how I became a Beatles fan since I saw the rooftop concert videos. I started watching every video I could documentaries and movies. I love the Beatles.
What's interesting is that before TH-cam, only the people who where there at the time knew about it for decades. There was the film, but it was rarely played on TV.
This documentary was aired on the Disney channel. All I gotta say is that it's well worth watching. We broke it in parts and watched the documentary in 4 days. It's eye-opening. And endearing.

The Beatles started playing live in 59 around England, went to Hamburg to be a house band and then came back to London, played in the cavern club famously and then of course got famous and toured 63-66 and they were playing with “state of the art” PAs , amps, etc. vox even specially made giant amps for the 3 of them because they were playing giant venues that never had rock music performances before, most notably and famously shea stadium. The state of the art of sound systems at the time were obviously awful compared to what we would have even 5-10 years later when it became normal for big rock bands to play large venues. The Beatles basically invented an entire industry with the need for bands to bring their own PA systems, microphones, stage monitors etc. (they invented probably a dozen different industries that hasn’t existed before, this was one of them)
George Harrison said NO MORE after the Candlestick Park Arena USA show. He could not hear what he was playing and the crowd was completely out of control due to crappy cops.
I’m almost 67, the Beatles are also a huge part of my life, since they 1st performed on the Ed Sullivan Show.. They always make me smile and remember..❤

The documentary is great, watching the song writing process is awesome. I really think they were the ultimate writers of rock music. So many great songs written so quickly it makes my head spin. From '65 to '67 was an amazing journey in itself. They had huge amounts of natural talent and dedication. Screw the naysayers.

You’re going to get about 8 hours of that precious footage when you watch ‘Get Back’ 😉 I’m fighting to get the first cut (18 hours) and full footage from the sessions (60+ hours) released because I (we) need it 👏🏽👏🏽 As someone who has created a handful of national TV shows, I have a lot of respect for Michael Lindsay Hogg, but I’ll never understand why he didn’t include Paul creating ‘Get Back’ in the ‘Let It Be’ movie. Like, that’s the moment (in additional George quitting, but they didn’t get that on tape.) 🤯
When the movie came out, it was during the beginning of my senior year in high school, and I was so ridiculously traumatized by their break-up that I did not go see it. I didn't buy the album until many years later. In fact, to this day, I have never seen the entire original "LIB" movie. But when "The Beatles: Get Back" came out, not only was I incredible excited to see it, and what had been done with it! I subscribed to Disney+ just so I could watch it, and I streamed it the MOMENT that part 1 went live on that Thanksgiving weekend! It was truly just about the ONLY joy I had felt for such a long time during the Pandemic!! I cried through a LOT OF IT. And of course, the moment when we see Paul giving birth to the song "Get Back" was just mindblowingly FUN! It was almost as euphoric a feeling as when I saw "A Hard Day's Night" when it was first released in theaters!!! I did end up ordering the DVD set for "The Beatles: Get Back" in Feb. of this year - from PBS website, of all places. I have not yet watched my set due to not having my DVD player hooked up. Now, you've got me in the mood to bite the bullet and actually WATCH the OG "Let It Be" film, and follow that up with "....Get Back"!!! Two great songs by the Beatles! I was in London last week and took a photo of the plain looking building where the Beatles played this show. There is a plaque on the front of the building noting the historical event. I also went to Abby Road and had my picture taken crossing the street like the album cover and yes I was wearing shoes !
What an incredible catalog of music all before they turned 30. In this video from January 1969, John and Ringo were 28, Paul 26, and George 25. Unbelievable!! What a great time to be a kid!
Lee, it was such a joy watching you watch this. You were so joyful. Remnds me of how I was when I first saw this way back when. The footage where Paul writes Get Back is miraculous. I couldn’t believe what I was seeing. That footage isn’t in the original movie.
After 50 years enjoying The Beatles music, sometimes I'd love to be a guy like you hearing them for the first time, I really miss the incredible feeling of hearing the White Album, Abbey Road or Rubber Soul for the first time
Paul seems to go into a trance when he starts working on "Get Back". I'm reminded of a quote by John Densmore from the TV Series "Classic Albums: The Doors", a documentary on the making of the Doors' debut album. Densmore said, "the music comes through you. You don't own it. The muse was hanging over us, and I am grateful."
John had the lyrics in front of him; they could not read sheet music. As time goes by, the rooftop concert has reached legendary status. If you saw the documentary, you can see how they came up with all of these songs within just a few weeks, writing them on the spot, mostly in the studio, with George Martin, telling them that the studio time was very expensive, but letting them do their thing. Everything, the practice, the song writing, even the conflicts, along with the humor, converge together, making historical, Musical masterpiece. As a baby boomer, it makes me happy to see younger generations, enjoying this music. I also love the early stuff.
Of those who allege that "The Beatles" didn't actually play their instruments, I ask who played their instruments during their live performances. They don't have an answer.

I never get tired of watching a concert on the roof. For someone that grew up in the 60s when I retired discovering TH-cam. We weren't lucky enough to have these great performances at our fingertips. I spend at least a couple hours a day now watching amazing performances. Mostly the Beatles. I am a McCartney person so I love to watch his solo stuff also. Wings is amazing.
You may have found this out I don’t know, but John played lead guitar and two lead solos on get back! Lots of Beatles today I love it! The studio Version of dig a pony Has John saying something strange I can’t remember exactly what it is at the moment. But that’s not unusual for him lol!
Lee this is an excellent example of how a lot of songs are written. You sit down start stumbling through playing chords humming melodies until it evolves into something you like and keep. Same with lyrics, sit down start scribbling down words and ideas trying to rhyme scratching things out re-writing until you hit on something you like. Rarely do songs just suddenly appear out of nowhere like what we hear as the finished product. Occasionally it just happens and writes itself perfectly the first draft, but rarely. Songwriting and the creative process is something you work at. What I find interesting is that Paul actually wrote "Get Back" playing the bass instead of on the guitar or piano. By the way, I think I read that despite looking like he wasn't interested at the beginning, George Harrison ended up really liking the song once it was finished.
George was definitely interested from the beginning. He is just tired; it is early. Once the song starts to take shape, he picks up his guitar and starts composing a preliminary rhythm part. Then Ringo starts clapping. To anyone really watching Get Back, it is clear that George thinks Get Back is a banger. For the TV special, because of the time crunch, Paul wanted to concentrate on songs that were further along, whereas George wanted to work on Get Back to completion. Over the course of Get Back, you see a discussion where Paul wants to abandon the main riff of Get Back for being passe and George interjects that it's the core of the song. It is clear that George is championing this song, while Paul is losing faith in it. I think this is an aspect of The Beatles that doesn't get enough credit. Many of Paul's best solo songs end up unfinished or unreleased. He seems to need others to spur him on and convince him that something is worth finishing.
I can't imagine performing on a freezing January morning on top of a roof in London with such impeccable results. Just amazing. I often wonder how many other songs they could've played on the roof had the cops not busted in on them and told them to stop.
Thank goodness for the rooftop concert. Brings joy to me everytime I see even parts of it. I know that you think watching the Get Back documentary will will spoil other Beatles songs. The doc. only relates to this concert and it's facinating.
Believe it or not, the Beatles really were. Just 4 guys from Liverpool. Kings of the merseyside lunch time beat group scene. Who became forces of nature that changed every aspect of modern society in all corners of the earth. The Beatles were a gift to humanity from God.
Absolutely delightful. Oh man, now that you've heard these, as good as this sounds, you have absolutely got to hear the studio tracks of these; these songs were on the radio a lot, especially Get Back, but they are both such great songs and I'm sure you will did the arrangement.

There's such an eclectic (I was going to say motley) collection of onlookers from the nearby offices watching this concert. None of them could have known that this would be the last ever public performance of The Beatles and that they were watching history in the making.
I happy that younger generations are hearing the genius.of The Beatles. I was one of the very fortunate girls to have seen the Beatles in 1965 at the Atlanta Stadium. I was 15. My early favorites were and are: LOVE ME DO, EIGHT DAYS A WEEK, YESTERDAY, SOMETHING (George wrote and is lead vocalist on it) and WE CAN WORK IT OUT. Later favs are HEY JUDE, LET IT BE, GET BACK, DONT LET ME DOWN, ACCROSS THE UNIVERSE, ALL YOU NEED IS LOVE AND THE LONG AND WINDING ROAD. I PROMISE YOU will be impressed.

Thanks bud... heard 'Get Back' a million times, but first time heard 'I Dig a Pony for' nearly 50 years. Always used to skip past it on the album, but this was great. Must dig it out and dust it off!
I still remember as a 12 year old standing on the side of Anzac Highway in Adelaide in 1964, screaming and waving in the pouring rain as the Beatles went past on the back of a truck. Don't think I will ever forget it, even if I get Alzheimer' when I get older.
@L33Reacts - Yes! Paul is absolutely in his happy place in the Rooftop Concert. He always LOVED playing live - still does, after all - he's on tour at the age of 82! Lord knows he doesn't need the money - he just loves doing it. And I really enjoyed watching the process of the song coming to life in the documentary. Fun fact: The Beatles first appeared on The Ed Sullivan Show on Feb. 9, 1964. Also appearing on the show that night was the cast of the very popular Broadway musical "Oliver!", which featured a 19-yr-old Davey Jones, singing "I'd Do Anything.". That's right ... the primary lead singer of The Monkees that you just reacted to.

Something I noticed is the Get Back documentary reveals the true identity of "the quiet Beatle" - it was Ringo, not George. Ringo just keeps quiet 99% of the time, patiently waiting for his bandmates to come up with their ideas or do whatever it is they are doing. Contrast that with George, who is constantly yapping, joking, complaining, and at one point even quitting the band temporarily (lol), throughout the whole thing. :D

Get Back starts as strummed bass and mumbling and somehow turns into a song, and that turns into a great song. I have never written a song that way.

The Beatles started playing live in 59 around England, went to Hamburg to be a house band and then came back to London, played in the cavern club famously and then of course got famous and toured 63-66 and they were playing with “state of the art” PAs , amps, etc. vox even specially made giant amps for the 3 of them because they were playing giant venues that never had rock music performances before, most notably and famously shea stadium. The state of the art of sound systems at the time were obviously awful compared to what we would have even 5-10 years later when it became normal for big rock bands to play large venues. The Beatles basically invented an entire industry with the need for bands to bring their own PA systems, microphones, stage monitors etc. (they invented probably a dozen different industries that hasn’t existed before, this was one of them)
Well, it appears The Beatles are playing before a rock and roll audience, regardless of size, and sound is pretty effing state of the art.
George Harrison said NO MORE after the Candlestick Park Arena USA show. He could not hear what he was playing and the crowd was completely out of control due to crappy cops.

The Get Back Doc is so fun/amazing to watch.
The documentary is great, watching the song writing process is awesome. I really think they were the ultimate writers of rock music. So many great songs written so quickly it makes my head spin. From '65 to '67 was an amazing journey in itself. They had huge amounts of natural talent and dedication. Screw the naysayers.

You’re going to get about 8 hours of that precious footage when you watch ‘Get Back’ 😉 I’m fighting to get the first cut (18 hours) and full footage from the sessions (60+ hours) released because I (we) need it 👏🏽👏🏽 As someone who has created a handful of national TV shows, I have a lot of respect for Michael Lindsay Hogg, but I’ll never understand why he didn’t include Paul creating ‘Get Back’ in the ‘Let It Be’ movie. Like, that’s the moment (in additional George quitting, but they didn’t get that on tape.) 🤯
When the movie came out, it was during the beginning of my senior year in high school, and I was so ridiculously traumatized by their break-up that I did not go see it. I didn't buy the album until many years later. In fact, to this day, I have never seen the entire original "LIB" movie.
But when "The Beatles: Get Back" came out, not only was I incredible excited to see it, and what had been done with it! I subscribed to Disney+ just so I could watch it, and I streamed it the MOMENT that part 1 went live on that Thanksgiving weekend! It was truly just about the ONLY joy I had felt for such a long time during the Pandemic!!
I cried through a LOT OF IT. And of course, the moment when we see Paul giving birth to the song "Get Back" was just mindblowingly FUN! It was almost as euphoric a feeling as when I saw "A Hard Day's Night" when it was first released in theaters!!!
I did end up ordering the DVD set for "The Beatles: Get Back" in Feb. of this year - from PBS website, of all places. I have not yet watched my set due to not having my DVD player hooked up.
Now, you've got me in the mood to bite the bullet and actually WATCH the OG "Let It Be" film, and follow that up with "....Get Back"!!! I've put it off for too long, and the hourglass is getting low for me, at 71!

Two great songs by the Beatles! I was in London last week and took a photo of the plain looking building where the Beatles played this show. There is a plaque on the front of the building noting the historical event.
I also went to Abby Road and had my picture taken crossing the street like the album cover and yes I was wearing shoes !
What an incredible catalog of music all before they turned 30. In this video from January 1969, John and Ringo were 28, Paul 26, and George 25. Unbelievable!! What a great time to be a kid!
Lee, it was such a joy watching you watch this. You were so joyful. Remnds me of how I was when I first saw this way back when. The footage where Paul writes Get Back is miraculous. I couldn’t believe what I was seeing. That footage isn’t in the original movie.
It was a joy watching John smiling and playing and doing his thing and a joy as well to see Lee enjoying them all as much as we did as kids.

Paul seems to go into a trance when he starts working on "Get Back". I'm reminded of a quote by John Densmore from the TV Series "Classic Albums: The Doors", a documentary on the making of the Doors' debut album. Densmore said, "the music comes through you. You don't own it. The muse was hanging over us, and I am grateful."
My sister in law, is named Lorretta. I started to say Get Back Loretta when I met her in 1988. Still going on ❤😂

John had the lyrics in front of him; they could not read sheet music. As time goes by, the rooftop concert has reached legendary status. If you saw the documentary, you can see how they came up with all of these songs within just a few weeks, writing them on the spot, mostly in the studio, with George Martin, telling them that the studio time was very expensive, but letting them do their thing. Everything, the practice, the song writing, even the conflicts, along with the humor, converge together, making historical, Musical masterpiece. As a baby boomer, it makes me happy to see younger generations, enjoying this music. I also love the early stuff.
Of those who allege that "The Beatles" didn't actually play their instruments, I ask who played their instruments during their live performances.
They don't have an answer.

I never get tired of watching a concert on the roof. For someone that grew up in the 60s when I retired discovering TH-cam. We weren't lucky enough to have these great performances at our fingertips. I spend at least a couple hours a day now watching amazing performances. Mostly the Beatles. I am a McCartney person so I love to watch his solo stuff also. Wings is amazing.
You may have found this out I don’t know, but John played lead guitar and two lead solos on get back!

Lee this is an excellent example of how a lot of songs are written. You sit down start stumbling through playing chords humming melodies until it evolves into something you like and keep. Same with lyrics, sit down start scribbling down words and ideas trying to rhyme scratching things out re-writing until you hit on something you like. Rarely do songs just suddenly appear out of nowhere like what we hear as the finished product. Occasionally it just happens and writes itself perfectly the first draft, but rarely. Songwriting and the creative process is something you work at. What I find interesting is that Paul actually wrote "Get Back" playing the bass instead of on the guitar or piano. By the way, I think I read that despite looking like he wasn't interested at the beginning, George Harrison ended up really liking the song once it was finished.
George was definitely interested from the beginning. He is just tired; it is early. Once the song starts to take shape, he picks up his guitar and starts composing a preliminary rhythm part. Then Ringo starts clapping. To anyone really watching Get Back, it is clear that George thinks Get Back is a banger. For the TV special, because of the time crunch, Paul wanted to concentrate on songs that were further along, whereas George wanted to work on Get Back to completion. Over the course of Get Back, you see a discussion where Paul wants to abandon the main riff of Get Back for being passe and George interjects that it's the core of the song. It is clear that George is championing this song, while Paul is losing faith in it. I think this is an aspect of The Beatles that doesn't get enough credit. Many of Paul's best solo songs end up unfinished or unreleased. He seems to need others to spur him on and convince him that something is worth finishing.
I can't imagine performing on a freezing January morning on top of a roof in London with such impeccable results. Just amazing. I often wonder how many other songs they could've played on the roof had the cops not busted in on them and told them to stop.

Thank goodness for the rooftop concert. Brings joy to me everytime I see even parts of it. I know that you think watching the Get Back documentary will will spoil other Beatles songs. The doc. only relates to this concert and it's facinating.
Believe it or not, the Beatles really were. Just 4 guys from Liverpool. Kings of the merseyside lunch time beat group scene. Who became forces of nature that changed every aspect of modern society in all corners of the earth. The Beatles were a gift to humanity from God.
Absolutely delightful. Oh man, now that you've heard these, as good as this sounds, you have absolutely got to hear the studio tracks of these; these songs were on the radio a lot, especially Get Back, but they are both such great songs and I'm sure you will did the arrangement.

There's such an eclectic (I was going to say motley) collection of onlookers from the nearby offices watching this concert. None of them could have known that this would be the last ever public performance of The Beatles and that they were watching history in the making.
I happy that younger generations are hearing the genius.of The Beatles. I was one of the very fortunate girls to have seen the Beatles in 1965 at the Atlanta Stadium. I was 15. My early favorites were and are: LOVE ME DO, EIGHT DAYS A WEEK, YESTERDAY, SOMETHING (George wrote and is lead vocalist on it) and WE CAN WORK IT OUT. Later favs are HEY JUDE, LET IT BE, GET BACK, DONT LET ME DOWN, ACCROSS THE UNIVERSE, ALL YOU NEED IS LOVE AND THE LONG AND WINDING ROAD. I PROMISE YOU will be impressed.

Thanks bud... heard 'Get Back' a million times, but first time heard 'I Dig a Pony for' nearly 50 years. Always used to skip past it on the album, but this was great. Must dig it out and dust it off!
I still remember as a 12 year old standing on the side of Anzac Highway in Adelaide in 1964, screaming and waving in the pouring rain as the Beatles went past on the back of a truck. Don't think I will ever forget it, even if I get Alzheimer' when I get older.
@L33Reacts - Yes! Paul is absolutely in his happy place in the Rooftop Concert. He always LOVED playing live - still does, after all - he's on tour at the age of 82! Lord knows he doesn't need the money - he just loves doing it. And I really enjoyed watching the process of the song coming to life in the documentary. Fun fact: The Beatles first appeared on The Ed Sullivan Show on Feb. 9, 1964. Also appearing on the show that night was the cast of the very popular Broadway musical "Oliver!", which featured a 19-yr-old Davey Jones, singing "I'd Do Anything.". That's right ... the primary lead singer of The Monkees that you just reacted to.

Something I noticed is the Get Back documentary reveals the true identity of "the quiet Beatle" - it was Ringo, not George. Ringo just keeps quiet 99% of the time, patiently waiting for his bandmates to come up with their ideas or do whatever it is they are doing. Contrast that with George, who is constantly yapping, joking, complaining, and at one point even quitting the band temporarily (lol), throughout the whole thing. :D
