    "$17,000 Bird Strike + ZERO Hesitation Rejected Take Off - Is your briefing this SOLID?"
    • $17,000 Bird Strike + ...
    HUGE thanks to Ryan for being awesome sharing such a great debrief of this #BirdStrike !
    Here is some additional context from Ryan:
    It is very easy to second guess a pilot’s decisions from the comfort of an armchair. In aviation we have split seconds to make critical decisions. No pilot intentionally puts themselves in harms way. The best we can hope for is that the combination of the information that we have at the moment, the experience that we have from the past and the time allotted to act is sufficient to ensure the safest possible outcome. Risk is part of everything we do. The best we can do is to mitigate it to the greatest extent possible. As an airline transport pilot with thousands of hours of experience in everything from single engine piston aircraft to large jets, I do not take flying a damaged aircraft lightly and went through all the necessary steps to mitigate risk which included having it inspected by an engineer, obtaining a ferry permit and going over every possible scenario prior to the ferry flight. Conducting this ferry flight was done legally however the final decision to do so is that of the pilot in command based on their comfort level with the aircraft and their confidence that their cumulative experience will allow them to handle any unforeseen events. If in doubt, keep the aircraft on the ground and consult someone that has more experience or is more knowledgeable in the type of operation that is to be conducted. Remember, anytime you fly and aircraft that has any damage that may void its certificate of airworthiness, you are essentially a test pilot and should not take that lightly.

    I am a "weekend warrior" private pilot, I fly for fun with no intentions of going commercial. I have had my PPL for over 15 years, but still consider each flight a learning experience - I generally take detailed notes after each flight to remind myself what went well or what I could do to improve.... Having the GoPro cameras to record flights like this is invaluable. I find these self analysis videos very helpful in my constant quest to improve, and am happy to share. Feedback is invited; however, please keep it positive.

    Ryan’s Personal Debrief
    Some comments have come up on a few items so I’ll address them here. First of all thank you to everyone for your awesome comments and observations, this is what makes Steve’s channel so valuable.
    1. De-Icing: De-Icing the plane for this flight was a 2 hour process, all for a 9 minute flight. First I scraped the majority of the frost off with a card then used a brush to get the rest off. The airplane was then taxiied and positioned into the sun to let the big fireball do the rest in above freezing temperatures while I went and had a coffee in the airport cafe. When we took off the airplane was 100% contamination free on all surfaces.
    2. Obscured Window: Yes the right hand side window had dew on it and if I were to do it again I’d spend more time wiping it down to have a better view. That said I could see through it far better than the camera angle shows.
    3. Landing on the Displaced Threshold (Applicable to Canada): I put in a call to Transport Canada today to verify my interpretation and here it goes. The reference about landing in the displacement is in the TC-AIM. Nothing in the AIM is enforceable unless there is an associated regulation in the CARS. Most AIM items do have an associated regulation. In this case, there is no regulation. The AIM is a big book of best practices. So under normal circumstances landing in the displacement is not a best practice however it is permitted at the pilot's discretion if deemed safe and operationally beneficial.
    4. Video Documenting the repairs: This is happening for those that are interested.
    5. If you read this far, subscribe to The Flight Chops Channel, My Channel ( th-cam.com/users/pacificcoastpilot and leave a comment below with #coaching and one person will receive an hour of video coaching with me on IFR or Off Airport Flying through my company Cardinal Aviation( www.cardinalaviation.ca )
    Conclusion: I hope this answers the bulk of critiques, of you want to see my take on risk management check out the paragraph that I wrote for Steve in the Video description. Give away closes December 10.
    Thanks Steve and keep you Flight Chops Sharp.

      As a film maker and a pilot, this channel has been my passion and also a very big responsibility as the reach has grown.
      I am honoured to be able to work with many pilots and aviators that are willing to "put themselves out there" in my videos.
      While editing, I work very hard to add as much context as I can, and when we fail to clarify something or simply miss a detail, it is awesome when constructive discussion arrises in the comments to share insights and different perspectives.
      When I feature an other pilot as PIC in a video, such as is the case in this one, I take it very personally if that pilot is subjected to any attacks.
      With that in mind, constructive comments are invited, and for the most part this thread has been extremely positive; however, the small minority that are being aggressive, and accusatory are not adding anything positive to the conversation.
      Please imagine yourself standing there in person looking Ryan (or me) in the eye when you draft a comment; Is it something you'd be able to say if you were physically engaging in a human conversation? If not... maybe rethink the wording or tone.
      Best regards,
      Steve

    I appreciate the professional way you approach flying. Its easy to become complacent and sloppy over time. I always try to plan out where I will go when im taking off or cruising if something goes wrong. 24 years in heliocpters. One lost tail rotor, two engine failures, ground resonance x 3, and a few emergency lights in flight. I am still learning.

    This one was good for me because now that I'm flying a bit more frequently, one thing I haven't worked on is my preflight briefing. I need to get that procedure down and memorized, and that's been nagging at me for some time now. This lit a fire under me, and I'm going to work on it today. I will strive to emulate Ryan's level of professionalism.

    • @phreakmonkey
      @phreakmonkey 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      This was one of my takeaways too. I'm going to start doing t/o and approach briefings in this style. I love the idea of calling out exactly what the predetermined factors and decisions are going to be beforehand.
      Also, the visual indicator (checklist stuck in the throttles) when he changed something from the T/O config. I've made that omission in a similar circumstance and luckily caught it on the takeoff roll, so I'm going to work out something compatible for my aircraft (e.g. hang something on the throttle knob). Lots to learn here from Ryan's excellent example.

    • @tissuepaper9962
      @tissuepaper9962 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@phreakmonkey being a very forgetful person myself, the best way to avoid forgetting is to make it physically impossible for you to forget. For example, if you need to remember to take a pie or something somewhere when you leave, put your car keys in the fridge, right next to the thing you need to remember. Has saved me several times.

    I keep coming back to the point where you actually declined the takeoff clearance, Ryan. I know the PIC of an aircraft has the final say with respect to not doing something that jeopardizes the safety of his or her aircraft, and can decline any instruction given by ATC if they feel it's required, but to actually see it in action is so cool to me.

Firstly, thank you so much Ryan for these 2 vids. #coaching I love the home truth about not just doing a briefing but actually sticking to the rules you make BECAUSE THEY ARE CRUCIAL. There were lots of other take aways for me - checklists, reminders to complete them, declining take off, and much more. STEVE, may I explain how I found FlightChops? See my avatar? Yup, a Harvard with me in it 😆. Sooo, I took an experience flight in a T6 Harvard earlier this year and when I got home I checked for vids and found you! You are such an inspiration. I love your vids and the learning experience in each one. It takes a big man to reveal mistakes, fear, even to express simple caution, but also to share ambition and success in equal measure, all with the intention of helping others understand the love of aviation. Of course, the minute my instructor said 'You have control' and I got to steer (!) I was hooked. I was taught that displaced thresholds are advisory, not legally binding, and it's up to the pilot in command to decide exactly what to do. Is this not the case in other countries?
    Landing on 07 at Langley involves a 650 foot displaced threshold due to trees just west of the airport. You either fly a 3 degree approach to the remaining runway past the numbers, or you fly an obstacle-clearance approach past the trees and use the whole runway. If you do the latter you also stay higher longer over a built-up part of Langley. This is A Good Thing. #coaching

      Hi All - I keep thinking about the phrase "we're not going to stop flying until we reach the airport or the scene of the accident". I understand the spirit of it - I teach at a university, and from now on I'm going to include it in my syllabuses. So many students do bad on one test and then give up.... I hope they will embrace the spirit of this flight briefing!

    That’s awesome that the community was there for you. That deductible can be killer for those who may not have the money, and it may prevent people from ever flying again. That’s a good feeling knowing that people you may not even know have your back. Hope the wing is an easy fix. :)

    A very professional flight, well done and thanks for sharing it. I retired as a 747 Captain about ten years ago and it's a pleasure to fly with crew like that.
    FWIW back in 1989 when we had the pilots dispute here in Australia, I was flying piston twins over quite a lot of the country. On one flight, from the Gold Coast to Melbourne in a Baron B58, I had my head down doing paperwork at 10,000' when I caught something moving *very* fast out of the corner of my left eye. In the same instant there was a very loud BANG right next to me, and as I looked out I could see a large dent in the leading edge of the wing between the fuselage and the engine cowling. I looked back at the tail and could see some blood marks & a feather stuck in the horizontal stabiliser. If the bird (an eagle, I think) had been just a fraction more to my right and up a bit, it would have gone straight through the windscreen and hit me in the face.

    Awesome video. I would have used speed tape to block the opening as the drag associated with the hole in the wing and large amount of air going in the wing would have made me uncomfortable. Obviously it all worked out. Just a piece of mind thing for me.
