In celebration of Martin Luther King, Jr., musician John Legend performs his rendition of the U2 classic "Pride (In the Name of Love)."
Tonight my 12-year-old son sang this song softly to me while we were in the car, and in the end he told me... I love Martin Luther King but especially you... and whenever I listen to it, Dad will think of both of us … (We live for these moments that simply appear unannounced but we will never forget)
I'm a hardcore U2 fan and usually not a fan of cover songs.
However, this is an exception. It is a beautiful version... hopefully iTunes sell it, I'm going to check it out.
My twin brother and I were born in Detroit a week after #MLK was murdered. Our mother thought, “What kind of world am I bringing these babies into?” I remain an unrepentant social justice warrior. I’ll never stop fighting for and speaking up for those brothers and sisters who are repressed. This is what the legacy of #DrMartinLutherKingJr means to me.
Damn. He can sing. One more in the name of love. It was like dream come true. I was searching for a toned down version of U2 songs that I found John Legend's name. I was thrilled.

Bono had to be bursting with "Pride" with this awesome rendition. So am I as a follower of the philosophies of the martyr equality, peace, love, and human rights the great Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Great job Mr. Legend!

U2 recently reimagined this song. This is much better than their new version.
This song, especially this version, this voice brings me to a place of such emotion for The fight, for Martin, for those we lost and for the fight that is happening now.

U2's lyrics say "early morning" because of the time zone differences. It may have been 6:01 pm in Memphis, but it was around 6:01 am in Ireland.

Bono sings "early evening" in current live performances of the song.
Memphis 6:01PM was around 12:01AM in Ireland, not 6:01AM.
I so agree, it's like you sense something bigger than life itself happening, you don't know what it is but you just feel it and this song is so poignant at a time when we are celebrating Martin Luther King Jr's day today and then the innaugration of Barack Obama and the massive movement of a people - it comes around once in a lifetime and I'm happy to be in the moment. U2 wrote this song back in 1984and its so relevant today, beautiful words, beautiful song. Peace

Martin Luther King Jr. there is no words to define the stance he & many took up for the unserved, the poor, the voiceless, being a part of Gen Y his lessions are and will always be relevant to me b/c in order to perfect what we know is right,justice and humane we have to start with the core aspect of "Love". MLK love thy neighbor as thyself & that is the reason his lessions live on. This song is so poignant,beautiful thank you John Legend & many others who have sang this song. MLK = LOVE.PEACE!!

katykatfandesmetal I know,I watch U2 sang the song at the Lincoln Memorial on HBO & it brought tears to my eyes b/c of the relevance of that song with what happened today for The U.S.A. (Pres. Obama)& the World Community. Its like renewing of a nation and we hope the world community will accept the apology of what happpen the last 8 yrs b/c it wasn't a representaion of the people of the U.S.A MLK is one of my heroes as well & I wish he was alive to see the Civil Rights ERA was not invane. I still don't get why they released that as the single for that album, Moment of Surrender was a much better song from that album.
I can tolerate Get On Your Boots. It's Discotheque that I can't abide. But U2 will always be my favorite band.
@mdelandro The original U2 version is on "The Unforgettable Fire" (1984) and this version is on "Yes We Can: Voices of a Grassroots Movement" by Various Artists (2009) - iTunes Store has this version as an individual purchase, on Amazon MP3 it's "album only."

@martymcfett I actually despise Obama, but i'm a huge fan of John Legend and the wonderful music he makes. i'm also a fan of MLK, who is by far a better leader, and this song was meant to remember him, not a for a political campaign.

Actually, in every live performance since The Vertigo Tour (2005), Bono has sung "Early evening, April 4" to correct this, including the live performance at Obama's inauguration. As far as the studio version, they agreed It would be pretty outlandish to try to edit a 1984 recording of a legendary song, so they left it.

Now I can understand the neg reaction to my comments. I am in fact a U2 fan, but only of their early work. I don't think they've put out anything good in a long time. But I don't like Bono's voice though. Bob Dylan also has a terrible voice, but he's the best songwriter in the last 100 years. Not sayin Bono sucks
