Your first sentence is wrong. Rob said they were OPEN, not closed, which is why he thought they were buried quickly before naturally dying and opening. Forrest corrected him by saying not all clams open upon death. Common creationist mistake. Nice try though.
@@NinjaJay_Arashikage I listened to it again and, sure enough, Rob clearly states in 1:15:15 that the clam was closed and that's how you know it was alive when it was buried which, by the way, suggests to me the guy hasn't eaten shellfish his whole life. In a cooked dish all the clams involved are dead, but sometimes they remain closed so tight that you can barely fit a knife through the gap.

It was like you were sitting beside me every day on my commute to work, telling me your life story. I laughed, I cried, I laughed and cried again. It felt like I was there with you and couldn't wait to hear the next thing that happened in you life. But I knew the ALS diagnosis was coming and dreaded when that chapter would come. I absolutely love Dave Warnock. Such a warm and kind persona, and given his health issues, to devote the time he does to make the world a more enlightened place is incredible. There is a popular saying among us atheists: "You cannot reason someone out of position they didn't reason themselves into." Call me being semantic, but I don't think the phrasing here is actually correct. Everyone has reasons to believe in things that they do, regardless of how ridiculous or absurd they are. I love when people try to justify atrocities with "well back then" like somehow that's totally cool. Also, Joseph was totally doing a Kenobi "Hello there" since Forrest did say "Only a Sith deal in absolutes". So that was funny. Abortion, for me, is an easy answer. Her choice. Forcing someone, in many cases children, to bear the burden of and unwanted pregnancy is inhumane. To allow women/kids to die instead of the foetus, in my opinion, is murder. I am far more concerned about protecting the living and yes, women SHOULD have more rights than their foetus...or a corpse. You cant take healthy organs from a corpse if they are not registered organ donors. So many reasons why I am an Athiest. So many.

I saw a clip of an evolutionary biologist on a theist podcast. They pulled up a study as proof evolution didn't work and the biologist had worked in THAT LAB for 10 years, published papers from THAT LAB and written his thesis in THAT LAB. They had the gall to say he didn't know what was happening in the lab and didn't read the studies he co-authored when he objected to their attempt at quote mining. It's Spectacular.

To Rob: I purchased ammonite and trilobite fossils from the locals while crossing the Atlas Mountains in Northern Morocco. They were found at that height only because of the geological transformations that area has undergone ovee millions of years, just like the rest of the planet. Forrest's claims weren't about comparing anything to god. It was literally trying to define how faith was being used. He could have used ANYTHING instead of a goblin. A gold bar, a cheez-it, anything.

Daniel, Forrest gave some good advice when he said that a creationist needs to support their claims of creationism. They can try to tear down evolution and the dating of the planet, but what do they have as a substitute? But, you can also ask your creationist father where he gets his information against evolution, and specifically what is it? For example, if he says radiometric dating doesn't work, ask how he knows that. Odds are, he will either bring up carbon-14 or the anomalies that people have found. Those anomalies are now used as caveats for scientists who use radiometric dating, so they DON'T use them in those instances. And, I'm sure you know that carbon-14 goes back only so far, but look up the original paper on how it was devised, because it shows how KNOWN samples of KNOWN ages were used to construct the dating curve of C-14. Point that out alone and ask him to dispute that. When he says there are NO transitional forms, yet harps on Lucy, what exactly is he talking about?

If someone is claiming their are no transitional forms, it's a safe bet that they want to see a crocoduck or some other equally ridiculous thing like that which isn't claimed and doesn't even make any sense within proper evolutionary science. I don't find the conjoined twins example to a be a dilemma. That's a case of two human beings who share body parts outside and independently of their mother's womb. It's interesting to think about, and in cases where one needed a surgery or something that may result in death or damage to the other, there's for sure a conundrum that they'd have to face. But it has little to nothing in common with the dynamic of bodily autonomy between a mother and a fetus. It just sounds like it does.

@@willytingles "Conjoined twins" is not a simple category. Some can be safely separated, others cannot. Either way, that is no argument for personhood. You are, in most cases, considered a person at birth. There have been court cases that argued the death of an eighth-month unborn was compensable in an accident or crime. They haven't taken over precedence in law, though. But to be a bit snarky, a fetus will never achieve personhood, because it has to progress and develop into a baby first.
the error in this logic tho is that both twins have sentience, whereas if one twin did and the other didnt, the one who did would have the right to separate from the other twin and this would be more similar to pregnancy

I started really digging into critical thinking and fallacies only about 3 1/2 years ago and it was like someone finally turned on the lights in my brain. Before I engaged with metacognition it was a bit like walking on my hands because someone told me walking works by using your extremities. I was able to think...just not very efficiently. One of the first books I read was "The Skeptics Guide To The Universe" and it was a revelation (no pun intended). After the first time reading it I started noticing all the fallacies others were stumbling into. After reading it a second time it dawned on me that I was no better. That's when I was finally able to make progress. Being a Skeptic is a process. It never ends because you can always get better at it and it is the most beautiful and liberating path you can choose.
One of the best episodes I have seen on the atheist experience! It is very relaxing to have you both and not Matt. He can be sometimes very rude and he does not control himself creating a very tense atmosphere, even though he is argumenting correctly.
There's nothing better than to tune into the show (I realize I'm a little late) and watch a theist make a fool of themselves, but damned if I don't *love* calls like Gabe's. I think I get why he's like that - Matt's been on the show for what, 20 years now? He's heard the same crappy arguments thousands of times and seems to be over it. You come on the show to discuss slavery for the millionth time and Matt blows a fuse. You've got undeniable proof of God's existence? Great, here's the line, you're number 40 this week. Forrest hasn't been on the treadmill for decades yet, he's also got this genuine enthusiasm for his field that's refreshing. I still love how Matt argues circles around people, Forrest is just refreshing to watch.

Really good show. I also appreciated how swiftly they ended a call when it became clear it was going nowhere and moved directly to the next call, rather than wasting time on a bad-faith caller and then wasting more time on a lengthy dissection of the call after they dropped him.
As an educator myself, I must take my hat off to Forrest. This guy knows how to talk to students both willing and unwilling. Forrest, dude, you're really good at this. If I weren't already on your side, I would be now.

I am an atheist who was formerly a fundamentalist Pentecostal evangelist. The end times was something that was always looming over our heads because of the text in the scriptures that stated that no one knew the hour nor the day of the Lords coming. I often heard theists in my group refer to the possibility of his return being in the next moment etc. It is a horrible way to live. Thanks again for a great show guys and keep up the good work.

In a cooked dish all the clams involved are dead, but sometimes they remain closed so tight that you can barely fit a knife through the gap.

Abortion, for me, is an easy answer. Her choice. Forcing someone, in many cases children, to bear the burden of and unwanted pregnancy is inhumane. To allow women/kids to die instead of the foetus, in my opinion, is murder. I am far more concerned about protecting the living and yes, women SHOULD have more rights than their foetus...or a corpse. You cant take healthy organs from a corpse if they are not registered organ donors.

I saw a clip of an evolutionary biologist on a theist podcast. They pulled up a study as proof evolution didn't work and the biologist had worked in THAT LAB for 10 years, published papers from THAT LAB and written his thesis in THAT LAB. They had the gall to say he didn't know what was happening in the lab and didn't read the studies he co-authored when he objected to their attempt at quote mining.

I admire the way they can take calls from apologists who have the same tired, threadbare arguments and think that repeating them ad infinitum will make their fanciful stories true. Falsifiabiality is irrelevant, because you are not testing the truth of the claims, only whether or not you believe them. Having said that, Patrick's claim is actually unfalsifiable, because, although we can test what the universe is made of and how it functions, there is no way to test if for consciousness, let alone divinity.
You may be right that faith is required to outright reject Forrest's claim, however saying "I don't believe you, I withhold belief until I can see some evidence (which is most atheist's position) requires no faith.

Daniel, Forrest gave some good advice when he said that a creationist needs to support their claims of creationism. They can try to tear down evolution and the dating of the planet, but what do they have as a substitute? But, you can also ask your creationist father where he gets his information against evolution, and specifically what is it? For example, if he says radiometric dating doesn't work, ask how he knows that. Odds are, he will either bring up carbon-14 or the anomalies that people have found. Those anomalies are now used as caveats for scientists who use radiometric dating, so they DON'T use them in those instances. And, I'm sure you know that carbon-14 goes back only so far, but look up the original paper on how it was devised, because it shows how KNOWN samples of KNOWN ages were used to construct the dating curve of C-14. Point that out alone and ask him to dispute that.

Why is it that Timothy, who sounded quite young, was the most prepared, polite, and succinct with his call. I don't know if he was a pro-life advocate, but kudos to him anyway for having his ducks in a row. I wish he'd stayed on longer. More callers like that please, and WAY fewer like Patrick
He brought his "A-Game" and I really liked the dilemma of conjoined twins.
I don't find the conjoined twins example to a be a dilemma. That's a case of two human beings who share body parts outside and independently of their mother's womb. It's interesting to think about, and in cases where one needed a surgery or something that may result in death or damage to the other, there's for sure a conundrum that they'd have to face. But it has little to nothing in common with the dynamic of bodily autonomy between a mother and a fetus. It just sounds like it does.

@@willytingles "Conjoined twins" is not a simple category. Some can be safely separated, others cannot. Either way, that is no argument for personhood.
You are, in most cases, considered a person at birth. There have been court cases that argued the death of an eighth-month unborn was compensable in an accident or crime. They haven't taken over precedence in law, though.
But to be a bit snarky, a fetus will never achieve personhood, because it has to progress and develop into a baby first.
the error in this logic tho is that both twins have sentience, whereas if one twin did and the other didnt, the one who did would have the right to separate from the other twin and this would be more similar to pregnancy

I started really digging into critical thinking and fallacies only about 3 1/2 years ago and it was like someone finally turned on the lights in my brain.
Before I engaged with metacognition it was a bit like walking on my hands because someone told me walking works by using your extremities. I was able to think...just not very efficiently.
One of the first books I read was "The Skeptics Guide To The Universe" and it was a revelation (no pun intended).
After the first time reading it I started noticing all the fallacies others were stumbling into.
After reading it a second time it dawned on me that I was no better. That's when I was finally able to make progress.
Being a Skeptic is a process. It never ends because you can always get better at it and it is the most beautiful and liberating path you can choose.
One of the best episodes I have seen on the atheist experience! It is very relaxing to have you both and not Matt. He can be sometimes very rude and he does not control himself creating a very tense atmosphere, even though he is argumenting correctly.
There's nothing better than to tune into the show (I realize I'm a little late) and watch a theist make a fool of themselves, but damned if I don't *love* calls like Gabe's. I've been an atheist most of my life, but I wish I had made more of an effort to learn more about *whatever* when I was younger. You're doin' great Gabe!
I've got to say - Forrest is quickly becoming my favourite host. Matt is great when the caller is belligerent, but he sometimes slams people a little to hard.

Agreed. I can’t stand watching Matt. I get that occasionally a caller comes in really hot, but most of the time, they are being super polite, despite their poor arguments. And Matt gives me 2nd hand embarrassment. I hate that his personality is often representative of my beliefs.

I think I get why he's like that - Matt's been on the show for what, 20 years now? He's heard the same crappy arguments thousands of times and seems to be over it. You come on the show to discuss slavery for the millionth time and Matt blows a fuse.

Forrest hasn't been on the treadmill for decades yet, he's also got this genuine enthusiasm for his field that's refreshing. I still love how Matt argues circles around people, Forrest is just refreshing to watch.

Am I the only one who only watches this channel for forrest? Like. Im not really an atheist. I've just been agnostic since childhood because I was horrified by Bible stories. I just love hearing Forrest and his calm explanations
I really like people like Joseph. He called in with an honest pursuit of how Forrest and Dave think, and he was open minded enough to actually listen and try to understand their positions. We need more Josephs!

Rob has problems with the yes and no questions. And he doesn't really care about the lives of babies.
Almost every theist caller in these atheist call-in shows have problems with ANY question framed to be answered with a yes or a no. And that's because the true, honest and OBVIOUS answer isn't the answer they want to give. The repeated flagrant theist cowardice and evasion on these programs is astounding

Unless they have adopted a baby, child or teenager, if in a position to properly care for such, they don’t care about babies or the children that the babies grow into being, and so they have no ground to stand on, in regards to their stance on abortion. They just think they need to defend their god belief, their pathetic, weak, helpless, horrid god!
46:30 Maybe it's not that you're getting "better callers" but that tonight's hosts are superior at answering callers in a way that's very articulate and in a way that doesn't incite anger in others.

Really good show. I also appreciated how swiftly they ended a call when it became clear it was going nowhere and moved directly to the next call, rather than wasting time on a bad-faith caller and then wasting more time on a lengthy dissection of the call after they dropped him.

As an educator myself, I must take my hat off to Forrest. This guy knows how to talk to students both willing and unwilling. Forrest, dude, you're really good at this. If I weren't already on your side, I would be now.

I am an atheist who was formerly a fundamentalist Pentecostal evangelist. The end times was something that was always looming over our heads because of the text in the scriptures that stated that no one knew the hour nor the day of the Lords coming. I often heard theists in my group refer to the possibility of his return being in the next moment etc. It is a horrible way to live. Thanks again for a great show guys and keep up the good work.

Gabe's question was amazing, it takes a serious amount of self awareness and honesty to be able to notice and realize that in yourself. becoming reasonably skeptical is a process but you've got an excellent head start.

Fossils only form by flood and there are trillions of them. Fossils are formed RAPIDLY, which is why we know the worldwide flood of Noah formed them. Keep in mind that there are no human records older than the time of the flood of 4400 yrs ago.
And where are all the depictions of the dinosaurs living at the same time as humans? If there were civilisations they would have made art and "literature", no depictions of dinosaurs anywhere....
