I was one of the dudes who fought in this conflict, I was with the 2nd Scout Ranger battalion. I still remember this like it was yesterday.
Thank you for your service
salamat sir salute
I never thought having opportunity to see one of the bravest man in the world its an honor to see u here sir.
And i always wanted to tell u this and your comrades, i have no idea whats like in the battlefield, but i just want to tell u we are greaful to have a brave man like u thanking u is not enough, but u have my respect all the way sir if one day your the one need something just let us know once again sir thank and god bless and your family
Respect you sir my God bless you..
I was in high school at the time ~20km away from Marawi city center. I was living in the dorms at the time. The night of the attack, all of the dormers at the school were called into an emergency meeting in the lobby. We didn't think much about it even as we heard the news and thought that this was some small insurgency that can be resolved in 2-3 days. What we didnt expect was a truck full of Filipino soldiers coming in the middle of the night to set up security around the campus and literally told us to pack up our stuff and leave first thing in the morning. One of my batchmates was the daughter of the Mayor of Marawi at the time, and she was escorted off campus with super spec ops looking guys with TAR 21s and P90s (compared to the M16s and the M14s that the Army had at the time). Thats when we knew shit REALLY hit the fan. There was a MASSIVE (I cannot express how MASSIVE) traffic jam towards Iligan city, which was the nearest and safest city outside of Marawi at the time. Iligan was ~35km away from Marawi, and the city was CROWDED with evacuees. It was really insane to think about.
There was also a story about one of my classmate's dad's employees who WALKED from Marawi city to Iligan city. WALKED!! In the scorching sun. Amongst thousands of other people who were fleeing during the eve of the insurgency. Without water, and carrying a bag full of important documents for the family he was working for. Absolutely insane.
I have plenty of other second hand stories about the event from my HS friends who were living in Marawi at the time but were my dormmates as well. Just insane to think about that its been so long since it happened already.

@@theShadow484Clone of an M110 made or modified for the Armed Forces of the Philippines. There's a small-scale "Government Arsenal" that customizes weapons for the AFP because getting bespoke kits from the U.S. is twice as expensive. The bolt-action Remingtons of the snipers are complete from the U.S. though, including the Mil-Dot sights which they work in MOA and inches and not centimeters.

I am a Philippine Army Special Forces Class 27-82. We operate in Sea (SCUBA) Air (Airborne and HeliDrop) and Land - which in the Small Unit Tactics (SUT), gives more emphasis in Jungle Warfare Operations. The SF Team members are organized into specialized field - Operations and Intelligence, Weapons Specialist, Medical Specialist and Explosive Specialist. Special Forces Operations Mission specialiazes in Develope Organize Train Equip Command and Control (DOTECC). However, in joining the Special Forces. I also trained in Special Warfare Course (SWC 01-77) and Counter-Urban Terrorists Operations (CUTO 27-83). These two courses are additional specialization in the Special Forces. To pass the SPECIAL FORCES COURSE - you have to pass rigorous training in all I have discussed, aside from that, you have to pass the Markmanship Phase (you must be at least a Marksman). I hope this synopsis is useful and clear.
SALUTE TO YOU SIR THANKS FOR YOUR SERVICE IN OUR NATION 🇵🇭
I think Marawi is the 1st time that the modern Philippine armed forces fought an opposing force in an urban setting they are usually more accustomed to jungle warfare so Marawi was basically a trial by fire for them they likely done training for urban ops but never on this scale. The last time they ever fought in an urban setting in such a scale was during in WW2. Also for some Philippine SF like the Ph Scout Rangers the Battle of Marawi was the test mission for their recruits to graduate unfortunately for some the graduation of the recruit would be posthumous.
Sounds like how they did Recondo School in Vietnam. Their graduation test was a real mission (where as here, some of them didn't return from alive.)
Major props to these men. Brave souls.
Amazingly, the Spec Ops performed well despite being briefed on the crash course of urban combat!
Also the battle marked a watershed moment in the Philippines when for the first time ever the Moro Liberation Front, which was an insurgent group, call for a truce with the Philippine government so that they can fight together against ISIS!
lol what are you talking about. What is the Zamboanga Siege of 2013?
If were talking about stereotypical urban engagements, the PH had two: Marawi and Ipil, Zamboanga. But there also were several failed coup attempts that happened within Metro Manila itself since the end of the Marcos dictatorship in 1986, the largest of which happened in 1989. _All_ of the major military bases and airfields in Metro Manila -- including the General HQ of the AFP -- were taken by rebel forces. The presidential residence was strafed and bombed as well.
These engagements, both urban and jungle (of which there are many) has actually given the PH military a *lot* of experience when it comes to actual warfare. They've been constantly fighting communist insurgents, religious fanatics, and coup plotters since *_WW2._* Despite the obvious lack of military hardware in comparison to other countries like the US or the PRC, an argument could be made that -- if soldiers from all countries only had a rifle, a sidearm, and a knife -- the average Filipino soldier is probably one of the most dangerous among all of them.
Edit: Heck, they're smart enough to figure out that the RPGs ISIS used in Marawi couldn't penetrate *_wood_* without detonating. That's why there're these vids of plank-cladded PH APCs in Marawi with the names "Mad Max", "Fury", and "Free Wifi".
@@alcor4670Their EOD team is amazing too and resourceful. They invented their disruptor that only cost $10 compare to $16k overseas.

The rifle you see at 3:04 is a SR-25, a 7.62mm marksman rifle, similar, if not the same, to the American M110
it's actually the indigenously made MSSR (Marine Scout Sniper Rifle) specifically the Gen 5 series, it uses handloaded Matchgrade 5.56mm it originally comes with a 25-round straight mag so it looks reminiscent to an SR-25
@@rrenkrieg7988I can see the resemblance but to me the gas block up the front appears different to the MSSR and the longer suppressor attaching right back to the gas block isn’t something I’ve seen any any 5.56mm rifles, or even other 7.62mm rifles besides the SR-25 either. I mean if you know as a fact that is what the Philippine special forces use and they don’t use the SR-25 then sure I’ll admit I’m wrong but to my eyes it doesn’t look the same.
Edit: the Philippine Light Reaction Regiment, special forces, does in fact use the SR-25 and the video does explain that the journalist is imbedded with special forces not the regular army
@@boredgoose6008 yeah i dug into this some more and only the Scout Rangers and Marine SOF uses the MSSR, and you're correct that this is the LRR with the SR-25 and Remington 700P

I'm from the Philippines and I live in a city a few hundred kilometers from Marawi. Mindanao (a major island that Marawi is part of) houses a huge chunk of the Muslim population in the Philippines. There have been many insurgency groups in Mindanao ever since the 1960s to the present moment, most of which are radical Muslim groups that have their own goals, like seceding from the Philippines or establishing their own semi-autonomous region. However, many of these insurgencies are quite "tame" and have had bilateral discussions with the Philippine government for a long time. However, the ISIS militants during the Marawi siege were very radicalized and wouldn't listen to reason like some of the other militant groups in the area that would lay down their arms.
I have friends who are both Christian and Muslim who have lived within the same community. I personally think that these ISIS militants represent a very small but very batshit crazy part of religious indoctrination - in the same way, that there are Christian cults that would blindly follow a megalomaniac leader. So what radicalized these people? Ignorance fueled hatred. That's why many of these ISIS militants are actually targeting schools and universities in the area because they want to create a divide between Christians and Muslims.
It's good that Mindanao has finally gotten representation after years of struggle and that the Philippines were united against a common threat!

@@benjaminmyers5139 the Philippines is a capitalist democracy.
As a Filipino Muslim from southern Mindanao, I am grateful to see that someone understands how the radicalised individuals are indeed simply a small part of a huge group of people and should not be the representation for the majority.
I think you mean Abrahamic religions, Luke. And yes, they are of that same root.
Thanks mate! 🫡
I mean they don't really have the same roots. Islam has more in common with ancient Arabic tribal religions than it does with the other Abrahamic faiths. The Kaaba in Mecca for example was originally a polytheistic shrine of the Arabian tribes.
The Abrahamic adoptions into Islam was purely done to make conquest and holding onto their conquests of the Christianised (during the 7th century) Egyptian and Levantian lands easier. It's also why Islam adopted many Zoroastrian concepts when they conquered the Sassanids.
Saying they have the same roots would be like saying that 5th century Pagan Celts shared an Abrahamic root with Christianity because they adopted some Christian concepts, or that Christianity has Pagan roots because it adopted Easter.
Islam was influenced by the Abrahamic faiths of the time, it did not originate from Abrahamic roots.
@@TechnoMinarchistyou’re totally right! I’m afraid I oversimplified mostly to bring up the term Luke couldn’t quite remember in the vid (Abrahamic). I actually took a pretty in depth course about Islam in college and what you type out definitely rings true about Islam having a lot of ties to Arabic tribal religions present at the time of Mohammad and before. Thank you for taking the time to write all the info up!
Yup correct, but honestly they just a bunch of radicalist, and we all know all radicalist is pretty much idiot and didn't Resemble the actual religious it self. To be fair even majority Muslim countries like Malaysia and Indonesia also struggling to fight terrorism and they (isis) also kill a bunch of Muslim on their attacks, so yeah. It just sad to think they always bringing religious beliefs to push their agenda
In the Bible and Quran, the origin is from Abraham,. The islam roots started from the eldest son, Ishmael.
And the continuation of Christianity is from Isaac

The Marawi Siege was so impactful that Iligan City, one of the places that had a surge of Marawi evacuees, saw heightened military and police diligence. One mall even now had Philippine troops guarding it. And while the alertness has waned over time especially after the war, it never really fully loosened back to prewar levels. The one mall i mentioned still had Army troops. Cops in some checkpoints still wore green camo.

3:10 That "AR" is the "Stoner Rifle 25 (SR-25) semi-automatic sniper rifle/designated marksman rifle". Firing a 7.62x51mm catridge, in either a 10 or 20 round box magazine. Loosely based on the AR-10, the rifle is 60% interchangable with the AR-15/M-16 rifles. But excluding the upper/ lower reciever, barrel, bolt carrier group, & hammer. The gun has a "free-floating barrel", meaning that the handguards are attached to the reciever & does not touch the barrel.
no it's not, it's the MSSR (Marine Scout Sniper Rifle), it's a ultra accurized AR-15 made from aftermarket parts but manufactured in-house by the Philippine Army's Government Arsenal
it still uses 5.56mm from a 25-round straight box magazine,
Filipino SOF units prefer 5.56mm due to the closer ranges that jungle warfare entails, usually DMR ranges in jungles are more 50-200m than the regular 400-1000m in open battlefields,
Oh yikes thanks for correcting me! Sometimes I can't tell between these AR-15 type variants 😅@@rrenkrieg7988

First part of the video featured the Light Reaction Regiment (LRR for short) of the Philippines Army that specializes in Urban Warfare. They are the Delta Force equivalent of the Philippines and were also trained by them. That is what I know of as a Marine Reserve... :D
LRR wasn't trained by the Delta Force, but rather by the Green Berets.
I live far from marawi i was in 7th grade that time in davao-panabo i saw a few jets fly by armed with missiles and a lots of soldiers and heavy armored vihicles going to marawi
the rifle they use is a scout designated marksman rifle(SDMR) a locally made marksman rifle by filipino arm industry.
Fires the same 5.56 round as the M16s and M4s too if I remember correctly, designed specifically to ease logistics.
A friend of mine was part of the team that made a documentary about the Marawi Siege. He was a cameraman following one of the journalists. On one occasion, they were attached to a sniper team, and my friend took up position in the sniper nest. One of their practices was to tape over the red recording light so as not to draw attention. But on this occasion, he forgot to tape it over so his light was shining for the whole damn world to see! Next thing he knew, a sniper round zipped past his head, and he was quickly pulled down by the soldier he was with.
You should react to the scout rangers. They were also doing some stuff during the battle of Marawi. Like for example this one Captain or officer on field told the IFV driver to ram that building in order of the wounded to use that as a steeping stool to evac the bogged down forces and move the wounded.
This is one of the major urban conflicts in the Philippines. But more often anti insugency operations are conducted almost everyweek around the country where insurgents wreak havoc. To note, not only extremist threatens the peace of every Filipino citizen but also communist insurgents. With this non-stop small and big scale conflicts in the country, many soldiers here have combat experience which really make Philippine armed forces recognizable around the world in terms of handling situations like this. Thanks also to the allies who continuously support the country.

It was shown around the intro. He missed it
The sniper that uses the AR platform is called Marine Scout Sniper Rifle.
There was a time when Filipino soldiers valiantly fought on several war fronts and earned recognition by the international community (WW2, Korean War, Vietnam War). Decades of corruption and complacency ate away at our prestigious armed forces. The jungle warfare and guerilla tactics that they employed were outstanding but now, new generation forces are unequipped and not fully combat ready. I wish this could end. THIS IS THE TRUTH.
filipino military are the best... I don't think why they want war with us. we filipino, we don't want war because of fear that bring on it but we won't yield we always fight until the last enemy surrender, its like, til dead do us part.

Good day! The AR-type sniper rifle you were asking about is the Knights Armament SR-25 semi-auto sniper rifle. Its derived from the AR10, and uses 7.62x51mm.
Just to clarify, while the entire country is majority Christian, the islands of Mindanao and the surrounding islands have a very large Muslim populations. Marawi City, for example, used to be the capital of a Muslim Sultanate.
Its Abrahamic religions, where Judaism, Christianity and Islam all stem from. The Judaic and Christian common root carries on for far longer, until Jesus, whereas Islam separates far earlier, at Abraham's sons. To a non-religious person, the differences may seem minor, but are actually quite substantial when you dig into them
They may have the same root, but the reason there is so much conflict between Islam and the other 2, is because unfortunately there are some extremists, particularly in Islam these days (although the Catholic church wasnt very different in the Dark Ages), that are utterly intolerant of anything else (especially of other Abrahamic faiths).
Don't comment on the Catholic Church without solid basis. Truth must be upheld. Complete your context and your solid proofs. Respect

I bet Barrett firearms would be highly interested to know that their Tennessee made family-owned rifles are falling into the hands of insurgents... That's super weird.
Probably from all the stuff we left in the Middle East. Sucks.

Most weapons that the PH military have that look "modern" are old weapons that have been tuned up. For example, wooden parts were replaced with fiber stock, accesories were added, etc.

Of course, the AFP Socom isn't going to show SpecOps techniques on TV, or whatever. The battle of Marawi is more complicated than the one of Fallujah. The soldiers (Marines, included) prioritized saving the trapped civilians while trying to identify whether said civies are supporters of the terrorists, after all, the terries are mostly clansmen of the people there. While they battle it all out, the special ops teams on the ground also serve as air strike coordination as well. Which, is already an additional duties for them. But in the end, coordinated small unit tactics used by the Scout Rangers, Special Forces, and the Light Reaction Regiments.
Despite the challenging new terrain, the Scout Rangers, which are jungle specialists, were able to accomplish their mission in the Urban settings. They weren't actually used to Counter-terrorism. Their main specialization is anti-guerilla jungle warfare. They were actually the force multiplier for the CT, and urban warfare trained LRR. The Filipino Green Berets were also used, but their operations are hush-hushed.
It's alright to pause because you know what you're doing based on your experience. props to you for explaining us how the military tactics works.

It's nice to see you reacting to our country's forces. Love the vids.
Also our family's religion is Islam, though we do have direct relatives who are Christians but we get along well. The groups in Marawi were indoctrinated in a different way than most non-aggressive Muslim people are, as such this was a case of radical indoctrination and loss in translation (in most cases) as there are more factors other than religion that played a part in the conflict such as drugs, illegal arms trade etc.
Yeah I'm New subscriber here suport from Philippines 🇵🇭❤❤❤
1:11 They're out in the open because of IEDs.
Maute/Abu Sayyaf would emplace command-detonated or pressure triggered IEDs in places that would likely provide cover for advancing AFP personnel then fire a few rounds down the street when they (AFP) would get close, then blow the explosives when they dove for cover (explained at 6:16). Risking a shot that may or may not hit is a calculated risk preferable to getting caught up in the lethal area of a blast radius. Note that when the soldiers take a knee, it's almost always near established structures, tending to avoid rubble or anything that looks recently damaged.
Judaism, Christianity and Islam are all Abramaric faiths but, there are huge doctrinal changes that occurred as those faiths diverged. There aren't really too many similarities between these faiths now other than that they are monotheistic.
Please react to the Philippine Scout Ranger Training and The Battle of Marawi and if you want to know see th the story of how the Battle of Marawi started and ended, Please react to Marawi 120 days
11:20 the maggi noodle packet stuffed into the APC's wall just calls to me, every filipino will always have a packet of maggi chicken or beef broth noodles within arms reach
At around 4:14, you can see the guy's patch on his left shoulder. If I'm not mistaken, that's the patch for the Philippine Army's Light Reaction Regiment, which is the Filipino equivalent for the US Army's Delta Force
First SOF Airborne, the LRR patch is a Arrow with a tricolor diagonal stripe pattern in the background
I wouldnt say equivalent... They were just trained by them
@@raygun1414he is not saying equivalent in capability. He is saying in relative, they are like the Delta Force of the Philippines.
These guys are Army's, the Light Reaction Regiment (LRR). At the battle of Marawi time frame, the Designated Marksman rifle was the SR25, Mk 11 Mod 0, in 7.62. This is NOT the Marines MSSR variant. This is more obvious at @ 5:14 of the video, and the clearly a 7.62 lower and mag size. I am also surprised that no-one has commented on the Rem 700 @ 1:10.
amazing video! Royal Armouries that did a video on the KS-1 just uploaded a video on the L85A3! Would be cool to see your reaction to the newest variant of the SA80 and get your thoughts on it since you have experienced with the A1 and A2 variants! Hope your having a wicked day!
On 3:10 i think that rifle is MSSR(Marine Scout Sniper Rifle)
A heavily modified m16a1 to sniper rifle by Phil Marines to fill out their sniper units needs.
from what i know there *sniper* is actually a modified m16 and it can shoot very far ranges and because its a semi auto and not a bolt action its good for the follow up shots
That's Isobel Yeung of Vice news... she's quite a rare breed being out there in the battlefield.
The other sniper was employing an sr25 sniper rifle(7.62), the new version is the m110 sniper rifle.
She is a Singaporean Journalist .
@12:36, it's a bustling city center and yes warfare would level an entire city. And if our PH government would not engage diplomatically with China our economic zones would become just like Marawi.
The rifle you were so confused about is an SR-25 Designated Marksman Rifle.
I think the rifle you are referring to (the AR type with suppressor) is a semi-auto 7.62mm Designated Marksman Rifle (based on its magazine size), commonly used by the Philippine Spec Ops...not a regular-issue rifle to our infantry. Isobel Yeung, the reporter, had several video coverage of this war...there was even a video showing women-designated marksmen (actually a composite team of men and women) engaging the enemy...though you can clearly see that our soldiers are mostly ill-equipped but we always manage to improvise and adapt to situations.....the years of actual combat experience for these soldiers (which happens often frequently, sometimes in a day-to-day basis in the jungles of Mindanao islands is something for them to be proud of! on the other hand, the terrorists that they were fighting were not ordinary rebels, but mostly members of the local terrorist group Abu Sayyaf - highly trained and well-equipped with an almost unlimited supply of ammo which they previously stacked in the different parts of the city before the siege.
You were talking about Abraham, whose descendants later divided to Christians and Muslims.
Because He listened to her wife Sarah who thought it was ridiculous for her to conceive at her age 90+, they weren’t able to wait for the son of the promise which was Isaac. They tried to impregnate Sarah’s handmaid Hagar, who became the mother of Ishmael, the origin of Muslims.
Sarah later conceived Isaac, which later became the father of Jacob who is Israel, the father of 12 tribes of Israel.
the gun was a hk416, i think they made it as a Designated marksman rifle
Soldiers are really strong.
Even with a vest, gun and ammos they can still run,
I once holded a gun like an smg or something,it was looked 3kg it looked like the icr-1 from codm.
MSSR based on M16A1 platform. There are now 5 Generations of this rifle Made by Government Arsenal.
Philippines Marine (1st Marine Battalion) at 11:37 with US M14 rifle and a US M14 rifle (birch stock) captured from ISIS at 16:11
The LRR or Light Reaction Regiment, our special forces unit uses the SR-25 rifle. Acquired from the US and some are donated by the US government.
The first unit that Isobel was following is the Light Reaction Regiment, the Philippine Army's Counterterrorism unit and were created through the help of the Green Berets. They're the Philippine's Delta Force that either came from the Scout Rangers, Special Forces, or even both.
They're known for their CQB expertise also and top-secret missions where all of their operations are either labeled as a Scout Ranger operation or Police operation.
If you've seen the movie Green Beret, the character portrayed by John Wayne as the leader was actually that of Col Philip Bautista, from Nueva Ecija. I read it from the book of that title. The story in the movie was just a subtle one, that in the book was so brutal it explains why there were so many vets from Vietnam got war shock.
Though the Philippine Armed Forces at that time are poorly equipped but they got used to it. They know how to get around with it what ever the difficulties of the challenges maybe. Admirably they are very resourceful, resilient and full of wise discretions. They do not complain they just use to its fullest potential what ever equipment was issued to them.
Walang Iwanan (No one gets left behind) - this is common to us in every scenario even in the most mundane normal activity or shenanigans, ghost hunting, singing in a crowd, etc. This is why we make for great ally.
Ang mamatay ng dahil sa iyo (To die for you- refers to motherland) - the last line of our national anthem that evokes the warrior spirit? Sounds dramatic but I've seen soldiers that after singing the national anthem, their demeanor change. Weird to explain but it is truly like a calmness surround them before facing the situation at hand. Sometimes I wonder if it is the same for our boxers and mixed martial artists as they seem to always have a place in fighting arenas despite their size.
Bahala na (Come what may) - when cornered and no other options left, they will take take as many of the enemy with them. Suicide fighting all throughout the war history that Philippines had been engaged in. Even here in Marawi, a soldier gave his coordinates and asked his location to be bombed as he was surrounded by the enemy and also a way for his comrades to escape to safety. 😭
On the first attack in Gaza, there were Filipinos who died protecting their employers. Ironically, many western countries invite extremism into their doorstep like they couldn't wait to be invaded. When shtf, how many would be willing to die protecting the freedom that they took for granted?
There was a US presence here, maybe SF , but there are pictures in the internet showing MARSOC operators (looking like tourists and wearing flipflops) and a story about them lending their sniper rifles to the LRR operators.
More about Philippine military reactions… tnx for reacting as well to my country
isobel yeung is actually an award-winning journalist. also, her name was stated at the beginning of the video haha
They don't here each other. The Christians fight while supposedly loving their enemies. It's like you defend yourself from your attacking son but still love your son while hurting him to defend yourself.
My uncle and cousin both fought off these ISIS terrorists. They're incredibly well funded and trained. The special forces have the knowledge but they are so severely underfunded. Weapons, equipment, tech, gear, just not the absolute best for dealing with this these terrorists. Everytime my uncle and cousin left for missions they ask the family for prayers, they never believe they'll return.
It's called the SR-15. It's an AR based model converted to sniper rifle.
13:08 you are absolutely correct, she's the real definition of the " strong independent women " not Captain Marvel and other Women that Hollywood is trying to make
The guys are Light Reaction Regiment, the reason for the weapons/guns used
