  • @rmzzz76
    @rmzzz76 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    EVH Frankie @4:33 and Pariah @5:34 . No way around it, the EVH Frankie is handling the high gain a lot better here, you can make out the individual notes and yet it has a darkness to it. Pariah has nailed the timbre well on this one, but the note separation clarity is not there. Just off a little, but when you put it against the real clone it's a defect that stands out to players with acclimated ears. The "brown sound" in full effect on the EVH Frankie pickup. The Pariah sounds great; as long as you don't do a comparison like this! The core tone is there, but the clear note separation just isn't... You can drink the Kool-Aid here and think boutique built always must be better. Or maybe as an artist you prefer to support boutique builders, which is noble and there's nothing wrong with that! But the truth is consistency is really important with pickups and a large company brings that consistency through a series of processes/quality checks a boutique builder simply can not. Pariah is one man working out of a garage converted into a shop. If you dig his custom pickups, great! But these inspired by nostalgic models like the Pasadena pickups, Poundcakes, etc... They are a bit deceptive. It's the best one man's ears can determine. You have to keep in mind the Frankie evolved from a 60's ES-335 PAF at a time those pickups weren't even that consistent and the EVH Frankie involved a team of engineers figuring out how to reproduce it, with their ears and with tools measuring... With a boutique builder creating an inspired by model, they are working just with their ears and with whatever specs on resistance and EQ they can find on-line. A fun endeavor, but as the video demonstrates not always the best quality.

      @Peter_Stoops 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I agree, the EVH Franky sounds a bit better. I wonder if part of that is due to one body being ash and one being alder?

    • @rmzzz76
      @rmzzz76 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Peter_Stoops Not sure, that's possible. Both sound pretty good. Just depends on taste. To my taste the EVH Frankie is hitting the sweet spot, others might think the Pariah is. In general, though. Once there's an official product like the EVH Frankie on the market you have to wonder what kind of customer would buy some after market clone pickup, I mean the Pariah is cheaper so it has that going for it. It's kind of like the choice of going to a cheap street market with bootleg imports and buying a fake Rolex vs buying the real thing... To many any pickup maker who builds their reputation of copy-cat product is self-degrading, but that is just my opinion.

      Take your comment with a grain of
      Salt. In a forum you mention you had a negative interaction with the owner of pariah pickups. You were the only one to apparently have a negative one. Many, including myself think his pickups are the best thing out there. You’re quite in the minority and shall be looked at as discredited and invalid. These two in the video sound very very similar. The fact is pariah pickups are awesome, affordable and the owner is class act. Go spew your negative and bs comments some where else!! No one agrees with you here or on the forums bud.

    • @rmzzz76
      @rmzzz76 ปีที่แล้ว

      The EVH pickup was created in 2007 as part of a project Eddie Van Halen launched to create 300 exact replicas of his red/black/white stripped Frankie... It is objectively the closest pickup a player can buy to get Ed's Frankie pickup sound.
      Pariah is a single individual, I did have a problem with the dude behind the company, his name is Chris... something... memory escapes. He was nice at first, once I told him I planned to review is Poundcake pickups (inspired by the EVH DiMarzio set made for Ernie Ball in the early 90s) against the real thing his tone changed... When I asked if he made the pickups in the USA, he got angry (he lives in Canada and actually makes them there in spite of them being advertised as made in the USA), a few shady things like that. The entire guitar gear industry is full of snake oil and con artist, you might as well be tossing your money at the traveling carnival... Nothing against most the pickups Pariah sells, but he has several "inspired by" models and a whole series it seems inspired by Eddie's pickups over the years... Ed's estate doesn't get anything, the guy doesn't even donate some of the money to a charity Ed supported, it's just in very poor taste.
      But hey, if you like what Pariah ells, buy it!
      I've repeatedly said his pickups sound really damn good and I will not deny that, even though I'm blacklisted from buying anything from him. I think people should get information from multiple sources before making decisions. I never try to influence, just toss out facts and sometimes my opinion into the pot

    The EVH sounded a lot more aggressive and ready to just go full force. The other sounded slightly less gainy and cleaner. I think thru a real amp they would be better to tell which feels the best and sounds better. Especially with no added fx pedals or anything. Just straight up amp distortion and even super clean tones.

    EVH Franky for the win. The Ash bod has stronger upper mids (the Pariah pup guitar), vs the full bodied overall balanced sound of the Alder axe (the Frank pup). The EVH Frank is the better wind. But for the ultimate... The Duncan Frankenstein from their Custom Shop wound by MJ or Seymour himself (rare) is the BEST option, and of course, the most expen$ive!

  • @davidrivera5829

    Eddie did not say forget it; He totally got how to get the sound he wanted; He tweaked everything on his guitar... He only wanted to use the Bridge Pick-up... The Neck pick-up produces a warmer sound and Eddie was primary into solo's; Most of his idea's sparked from a riff he had done... although he was an awesome rhythm player too as well. He totally tweaked everything, even the pickups; He used to unwind them and dip them in parafum wax. I think I miss spelled the wax name but, yah that's basically what he did...
