    Today we are bringing you a review of the Lenovo Y700, more precisely it's the variant with AMD CPU and GPU as opposed to the standard Intel and Nvidia combo. But how far behind is AMD in the mobile department? Or is it maybe even ahead? Stick around and find out.
    Starting with the specs, our laptop has the AMD Carrizo FX-8800P with 2 real and 2 virtual cores. It also has the AMD Radeon M385X graphics card that clocks between 900 and 1100 MHz. It has 4GB of DDR3 RAM - and that's a number that is quite honestly too low for any kind of demanding use, or even 10 tabs open in Chrome. Luckily one spot is still free so we can update to an actually useful capacity. As far as storage goes, inside is a WD 1TB 5400rpm hard drive that is probably the reason for the sluggish performance of the machine. It is a fact that for a gamer orient laptop they should have included an SSD, maybe on the free M.2 slot on the motherboard. As far as connectivity goes it supports full AC wireless going through the Realtek chip. The latter companies' chip also takes care of the audio with the ALC 288 that is included in most of the premium laptops currently on the market today.
    The sound reproduced is incredibly good even for competitors that have two or three times the MSRP. Moving from sound to picture, the Lenovo Y700 has an LG IPS 1080p panel that is perfect for this price range with solid view angles and of course good reproduction. Above the screen there is a perfectly average 720p camera.
    The average experience continues with the connectivity options that are completely standard - two USB 3.0 ports, one HDMI 1.4 and Kensington lock on one side, while on the other - USB 2.0, SD card reader and the charging port.
    The keyboard felt completely at home to me because I have a two generation older version as my personal laptop that has the same travel and layout of the keys - therefore I'm not exactly unbiased here. The red-illuminated backlighting makes the whole product actually appear to be a part of the gaming sector. Meanwhile the touchpad can't be talked about in such high praise as it would sporadically working for a few seconds, often while using it in multitouch mode.

    I know this video is a little dated but I still have this laptop and now that it has matured it is a solid gamer. Lenovo released a BIOS update for the motherboard over 6 months ago. The included hard drive is horrible. I cloned the operating system to a Kingston Savage SSD. The cpu overheats and reduces the clock speed because the dust filter they used is some kind of cheap fiber material that air can't pass through. Filter was removed and thrown in the trash. Worked wonders on temps. You can really feel the heat being blown out of this thing now. This laptop has 4GB of GDDR5 memory for the GPU, the ram included in mine was 16GB. My biggest complaint was the issue with drivers. Trying to install drivers even remotely new caused black screens and I even had to reinstall windows once. The new ReLive drivers from AMD are solid. I can play Call Of Duty, Rust, Borderlands, 7 days to die, Etc. It was a lot of work but it paid off.

      mine went to sleep 3 months out of warranty, and stayed in the black screen, would not wake up. it still turns on, and the keyboard back light still works, the fans are running. tech support said the motherboard needs replacing, at a bit over a $700 bill to repair. so it still sits in the closet. lol

      is it possible to add a ssd drive and keep the original harddrive for storage?

    The reason behind throtttling is Lenovo's poor dust filter placed in the ventillation system. Removing the cloth you can get a decent performance, so it's not AMD's fault.

      True but even with the dust filter (cloth) the nvidia won't throttle. But I took it out anyways and man my temperature are super low :O. +2 degrees above room temperature when idle and 65 (celsius) degrees when full load. And the way lenovo manage to put all the heat only to the right side of the keyboard so that the "WASD" keys stay cool is just amazing!

      That's awsome bro! I'm about to buy a laptop and I just can"t decide which. Should I go for this AMD based or for the Y50-70 with i7 and GTX 860m. I just don't know. I mean I'm not an Intel nor an Nvidia fanboy and besides the sythetic tests, in real life gaming it's just a couple of FPS the difference between them here and there. What do you think?

      @DischargedNetworks  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      We did not know that, neither did we dig too deep (literally) in the Y700's insides - yet it is still shipped with it inside and Lenovo can therefore be criticized for it, as they should not expect consumers to remove parts of the laptop in order for the product not to throttle.

      +Olivér Sztancsek The laptop with the nvidia chip will be faster. But the build quality on the lenovo y700 (AMD build) is better than the y50-70. The y50-70 had hinge issues. But I don't know if it got fixed or not.

    • @DischargedNetworks
      @DischargedNetworks  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Quite so, the hinges on Y50-70 and even before that on the Y580, 570 etc. were quite prone to breaking over time. Through my (limited) testing I did not observe any bending and flex on the Y700's hinge or otherwise - truly a solid machine, but what can you do it if has sub par internals.

    Hey! I'm getting this laptop for christmas. I will be playing fifa 17, call of duty infinite warfare/ mw remastered and some more but these 2 are my most important games. Would you recommend it for fifa and cod? Thanks :)

    It's a shame that the combination of AMD cpu and gpu doesn't work well, a lightly gaming focused laptop needs a cpu with good single thread performance, and even this top of the line AMD core isn't on par with Intel 15w cpus.
    An 5th or 6th gen intel i5-xxxxU cpu would fair much better. I had a laptop with a 35w i5 and a HD8850M and it was decent for light gaming, a real shame AMD mobile cpus have fallen behind that much.

      Lenovo does offer an Intel+Nvidia combo for this entire machine that does not throttle based on user reviews, and we can only hope that with Zen AMD will kick back.

      There's an awful filter that Lenovo stuck in these laptops. They don't let much air in and that's probably why you're experiencing these issues. I took the bottom shell off of mine and removed the filter and it increased my fps on a lot of games because there's more air going into it now. It does void any warranty you have but do it at your own risk

    My Asus ROG with a i7 6700 and a GTX 960m 2GB runs a whole lot better than this. Go intel, never amd when it comes to gaming laptops.

    Techpowerup as well as multiple sellers of the Y700 list the R9M385 as having 4g of DDR5 memory rather than DDR3, which would make it comparable to the GTX 960m.
    I wish someone would do a side by side benchmark test between the AMD version of the Y700 with the Intel/nVidia version to see if the cost savings of the AMD version is worth it.

    • @DischargedNetworks
      @DischargedNetworks  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, there are multiple versions and generations of Y700 around - the outside remains the same while internals change. And no, I would not in any case recommend the AMD version as it throttles constantly.
