  • John from www.growingyourgreens.com/ goes on a field trip to Veteran Compost outside Baltimore, Maryland to share with you how compost and worm castings are made on an industrial scale. In this episode you will learn about the essential components of creating your own compost at home or on an industrial scale. You will also discover why removing food scraps from the waste stream (trash) is an excellent idea and how this turned into a business. You will see how to have fly free, bug free worm castings with no fungus gnats and other bugs.. Finally, In this episode you will learn how Justen created a job for himself and other US military veterans and their famlies and how you can too.

We have compost bin in the back yard. I love it.. it's not much now but it's about 8" deep now, every day we put our food scraps in and cover them up. We had a ton of black soldier fly larva show up. Man, those things can clear out some food scraps. . I'm also a vet and this is great to know someone took action instead of relying on someone else to pay themAs always thanks for your videos, love watching

Here in Southern Connecticut I love to walk in the woods and notice the "blooms" of worm castings along the paths and the large patches of worm casting where the skunk cabbage grows. I love earthworms and I'm fascinated by the cycle of growth where the worms eat up vegetation that dies to fertilize new growth.

You will get leaf humus or leaf mold. Leaves take a while to break down so it would be a good a good idea to add used coffee grounds as a source of nitrogen. You can get free bags of used coffee grounds with the paper filters from Starbucks. The filters will compost down too. They give the spent grounds away free to help the environment. Go to their website and look it up. Also use a lawnmower with a bag attachment to chop up and catch the leaves, they will compost faster.

I am a mile outside the Beltway. If I had to do it again, I would look a couple miles further. A mile is not quite far enough from the noise depending on how the wind is blowing.

According to a study by Nova Scotia Agricultural College:
A 35S modified DNA sequence was detected in composted manure from
poultry layers fed diets containing genetically modified plant materials up to
three months after composting was initiated and in vermicompost at 4
    months.
The results indicate that if composting is done well, modified DNA can be
degraded in four months. There is concern that modified DNA may persist
longer under less favorable composting conditions.

Feed the food scraps to Chickens first. They shorten the process making a better compost and give you protein. The remaining can be processed as done here. You can just leave the chickens run around they find their food.

If I just layer leaves and used coffee grounds with a layer of wood chips on top about 3 or 4 inches will this eventually turn into compost? I cannot add food, like I said I have pesky neighbors. I could water it frequently as well. What are your thoughts on this?

"Vermicomposting appears to be inefficient at degrading modified DNA."
However if the worms are being fed properly composted materials then the vermicompost should be good.
