  • Ninh explains The worst sports teams names in history. There are some sports teams that are named after ridiculous, non-sensical, non-threatening, or just borderline racist names. When your team is called the ‘Banana Slugs’ or the ‘Fighting Artichokes’, you know you’re going to be the prime target for abuse.

    There's a MLS team called the Chicago Fire. Basically they named their team after the worst disaster ever to happen to the city. It would be as if there was a professional sports team called the New Orleans Katrina, or the Boston Massacre, or the Oklahoma Bomber, or the San Francisco Earthquake, or the Los Angeles Riot, or the New York Jets...oh.

    The last time anyone conducted a poll to actually ask the indigenous peoples of the USA what they'd prefer to be called, in 1995, a plurality of nearly 50% answered "American Indian".
    The term "Native American" was invented by US government statisticians in the 1970s, to standardise the terms for "natives" of Hawaii, Samoa, or mainland America. They chose 'native' because it was short enough to fit on any chart.

    Again I will state that naming a sports team the Braves, Indians or Redskins is a compliment to Native Americans. It pays tribute to their warrior heritage and projects the tough image they want their players to display while competing. No one would name a team after a racial slur because that would suggest the team is inferior to the competition and doesn't suggest confidence. If you think that "Redskins" (as a team name) is a shot against Native Americans then you must conclude that the Montreal "Canadiens" are mocking Canadians.

    • @NinhLyUK
      @NinhLyUK  5 ปีที่แล้ว

If Warrington didn't want to be Wires they could have been Steamers, Locos, Brewers, Weavers, Elves, Tanners, Bombers, Cavaliers, all of which would have had some link to the town's history,

    They say that the name of the Toronto Raptors (NBA basketball) was chosen only because at the time the franchise was first awarded the most popular movie in theatres was Jurassic Park. But this is only half the story. The franchise ran a contest to name the team, and one of the suggestions that raised a few eyebrows was "Toronto Saurus Rex". No doubt it was this, more than anything else, that inspired the name that was finally retained.

    The Artichokes was a protest. I went to Scottsdale community. A few years back. K...Back in the 70’s the school was predominantly an arts school. A new director came aboard and wanted to cut the art programs to build a football team. Naturally, students were pissed their arts classes were gonna get cut for a sports team. There were a bunch of protests, but the director went with it anyways. They held votes to pick the team mascot, things like the bears, the sharks, etc., and left a few spaces to write in your own mascots. Kids just wrote down the dumbest thing they could think of and thus Artie the Artichoke was born. I love our mascot.

    The worst sports team name of all time is the Raton, NM Swastikas. They played part of the 1912 season in the Rocky Mountain League, a class D minor league. Class D was similar to the Rookie level teams of today - young players trying to make a name for themselves, but who are far from Major League caliber. The league existed for only the one season and is so obscure that baseball-reference.com doesn't even list the names of the players. Basically, we know it existed but nothing else.
    Of course, the Nazi party did not yet exist in 1912, and the swastika had no sinister connotations, so the name wasn't as unbelievably tactless as it sounds today, but in retrospect it is a pretty awful name for a sports team.

      "Notre dame fighting Irish is also a name stepped in derogatory historical stereotype "
      The official explanation is that they are named because of the Irish Brigade, a division that fought for the Union in the American Civil War. A president of Notre Dame was a chaplain for the division.
      Unless one considers fighting for the side that ended slavery a derogatory historical stereotype, most Irish-Americans have embraced the term.

    The term Indian isn't a racial slur within the states, and has never been considered as one. Despite it's cloudy history. The term American Indian is still used and preferred among native Americans. In fact the own Reservations of natives and their Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA) are happy with the name.
    I understand Europeans might not know of this as well as Americans not in contact with American Indians or Reservations so I just wanted to let everybody know.

They claim it didn't come from a misidentification of their land as India, but rather is a corruption of the Spanish "en dios", meaning "of God" refering to their spirituality.
    It's complicated: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Native_American_name_controversy
    But yeah, the Cleveland Indians is still a really stupid name and the racist logo doesn't help.

    • @NinhLyUK
      @NinhLyUK  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      kissfan7 I always questioned their use of the word 'Indian' in their official titles, as that kinda enforces the stereotype.
      But I suppose its like the Netherlands calling themselves 'Holland' to Americans because otherwise they won't know what that is.
      Cleveland Indians have done away with Chief Wahoo of sorts, but people still don't like it.
      Whatever you call your team - someone will have a problem with it ...

    • @kissfan7
      @kissfan7 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ninh Ly
      Cleveland hasn't entirely done away with Chief Wahoo. They increasingly use a different logo on their caps (a big red 'C'), but they haven't officially retired Chief Wahoo. They still use it on some games and it's still on the website. I think this is a slow process of weening off the logo instead of getting rid of it in one swoop and pissing off the stupid fans who don't like any change.
      I hope so, because I'm from Cleveland and love baseball. Because of the racism, I switched to the Red Sox (speaking of silly names) when I was a kid. If Cleveland changes the name they may be my second favorite team.

    • @NinhLyUK
      @NinhLyUK  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      kissfan7 Wow, I didn't know that? I assumed that because they don't use it on hats (and that I've not seen it recently), they retired him due to public outcry ... obviously not!
      I'm a Jays fan, and I like it when the Red Sox fans (who can't get a ticket to Fenway) fly to Toronto to watch games there. Feels more like a 'neutral ground' game. Better atmosphere in the stadium than when the Yankees are in town ... then everyone just boos!

    If they do go with it, in a few years we can add "Seattle Kraken" to this, for the same reason as the Minnesota Wild. It's trying too hard to be cool, like it's a bunch of middle-aged marketing execs arguing over what the 'hip young people' like. "It was in that show with the dragons! There's a drink called that! They'll love it!" and then a few years later the name will sound really lame and dated. A bit like when the Avs were going to be called the "Rocky Mountain Extreme", until fans rebelled against it.
    You basically have three waves of North American sports team names. Firstly, the traditional teams, which either have completely ingrained identities (NY Yankees, Boston Red Sox, Toronto Maple Leafs, Cincinnati Reds) or 'trader' identities, intrinsically linked to the working classes of that city (Green Bay Packers, Pittsburgh Steelers, San Francisco 49ers, Houston Oilers, Milwaukee Brewers) or their self-identity (NY Yankees, Boston Celtics, Dallas Cowboys, Montreal Canadiens).
    Then you have the "strike fear" names, after types of people (Pittsburgh Pirates, Oakland Raiders, Golden State Warriors) or animals (Chicago Bears, Chicago Bulls, Philadelphia Eagles, Carolina Panthers) that are intimidating or predatory in some way (the former probably explains names for teams using ranking titles, like the LA Kings, Kansas City Royals, and the supernatural people like the New Orleans Saints and the New Jersey Devils). There are a few exceptions in the animal category (Miami Dolphins, Miami Marlins, Pittsburgh Penguins), and one notable one in the people (Minnesota Twins).
    After that you have the recent trend towards abstract concepts or try-too-hard 'cool' names. At least names like the Panthers and Jaguars work. Nashville Predators is vague but at least we know a predator is supposed to intimidate. Now we're left with things like Utah Jazz, Minnesota Wild, Orlando Magic, and the majority of the MLS teams.

    • @NinhLyUK
      @NinhLyUK  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, I kind of agree. Sadly some of the names on this list don't fall to any of those categories. Especially the waaaaay abstract and out-of-there ones.

      'Padres' is also 'father' - as in a priest or a monk.
