    The neon Miami jerseys looked cool in a retrowave style. At least in the advert for the jersey

    • @NinhLyUK
      @NinhLyUK  5 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      If that was their look anyway, then I guess so.
      But it's so far removed from what they actually wear.
      I'm perplexed as to why would you dress a basketball team to commemorate a TV show? I'm not so sure about that.

      While Miami's hot pink look does kind of work for the style. And if Miami ever gets another WNBA team they should use those colors. But personally I'm so sick of anything retrowave right now due to the saturation of that style right now that it's best to keep them off the court.

      @@NinhLyUK I can see you're point there, but I would say that, that neon pink & blue color scheme is quite infamous with Miami as a city itself. It's fair to say that you could consider it part of the Miami brand, and not just an iconic TV show logo. So, that alternative design, really does fit the city well. That's the one of these new alternative jerseys the NBA uses that I don't have that big an issue it for that reason.
      The rest of them however, I agree with you, they suck.

    I don't think you understand what the earned nba Jerseys represent. NBA teams have always been experimental when it came to Jersey designs, team colour designs... The Miami Heat Jerseys are an homage to Miami vice colours, the Cavs jersey is a classic throwback, the Timberwolves one is a reference to Prince, Milwaukee is another throwback... I agree that you can dislike the Jersey due to it's design, but you can't call it bad just because you don't know the deeper meaning of it.

    • @NinhLyUK
      @NinhLyUK  5 ปีที่แล้ว +29

      Well, I actually do.
      I'm fully aware that each jersey has some sort of meaning, Miami vice, Cleveland's colours from the 90's, Toronto's 'We The North' campaign etc.
      But as mentioned in the video, they're all badly designed. I stand by that.

      Ninh Ly The original Steelers hooped jerseys would have dated back to when they didn’t wear huge plastic shoulder pads underneath the jersey, so they would have looked fine back then. However hooped jerseys worn over modern gridiron plastic armor just makes the players look like bloated bumblebees. The Buffalo Bills and the New York Jets played in their "color rush" uniforms with the Bills in all red (with white helmets) and the Jets in all green (with white helmets). The 90s MLB uniforms were a special "turn ahead the clock" promo (in contrast to the NFL doing their 75th anniversary throwbacks a few years earlier...the first time that throwbacks really became a thing in North American sports).
    en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Turn_Ahead_the_Clock
    Interesting fact: a lot of "throwback" NFL jerseys became the teams "new" colors. The LA Rams had white (from 1964-1972) or yellow (1948-1963, 1973-1999) horns on their helmets before changing to gold after they won their first Super Bowl (after moving to St. Louis in 1995); after they moved back to LA in 2016, they changed back to wearing either white or yellow horns as part of their regular uniforms. The LA Chargers started out in the AFL in 1960 with light blue jerseys and white helmets, then getting to a medium blue jersey and navy helmet look in 1974, then to all navy in 1985. They wore their original AFL uniforms for a few games in the 1994 75th Anniversary season and the fans loved them, so they started wearing those uniforms more often starting in 2000 before returning to a "modernized" light blue jersey/white helmet look in 2007. I'm an NFL uniforms nerd :P (My favorite all-time NFL uniforms are the 2004 Cincinnati Bengals...not because they're my favorite team or anything...)

    • @NinhLyUK
      @NinhLyUK  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, I'm fully aware which promotion they're from. It was also a test to see how fans would react to such designs with the hopes of implementing them. Obviously they were abysmal and they never saw light again.
      As for the 'throwback jerseys' - I hate them. Near enough all of them ... evolution is a thing for a reason!

      Sometimes, fans just love the old unis. Or the rebrands were just kinda ugly. The Bills went back to their late-70s look and those are a lot better than their 90s look. Same goes for the OG Pat The Patriot vs. Flying Elvis or the Gay Creamsicle Pirate vs. Ugly Buccaneers jerseys :P
      Whereas the Bengals and Broncos should burn their inaugural season unis from everyone's memories.

    Actually, studies have demonstrated that SEEING the color pink reduces aggression, which is why many prisons have switched to pink jump suits, and why the University of Colorado used to have the visiting team's locker room painted entirely pink in their football stadium . . . and why that was eventually made against the rules in their conference. So wearing mostly or all pink uniforms actually makes the other team softer/weaker. I suspect the way so many sports teams have embraced "wearing pink for breast cancer awareness" has as much to do with this fact as it does with a desire to fight cancer. {8^))

    In fairness to those 90s baseball jerseys, they were not the regular jerseys for any of the teams, but were worn for a one-day promotional event called "turn ahead the clock night." They were supposed to be "futuristic" uniforms. You're right to say they were all terrible, but they were not worn more than once. It started as a special promotional event in 1998 for the Seattle Mariners and their opponent that night, the Kansas City Royals. Then the following year, MLB had every team do it for one night. A few of them looked OK, the rest were awful. That promotion never happened again. In general, the 90s were a pretty good decade for baseball uniform design, with a return to the traditional button-up style of jerseys after the 70s and 80s-era pullovers and double-knits. That promotion was the big exception.

    Disagree with a lot of these takes, but I just want to add a bit. 1) The Earned jerseys are all homages to the past or the city or something. If you read up, they all mean something that I fell connects very well with each of the cities. They aren't just some cobbled together mess. 2) Those MLB jerseys you showed were basically SUPPOSED to look ridiculous. They were all from a promotion that was a throwforward instead of a throwback. They were intentionally ridiculously "futuristic" (or retro-futuristic, to us anyways) as a couple game pronation, hence why they are so radically different (hell, the Mariners whole color scheme was different, which I think is pretty funny given their colors are literally oceans colors. What else would the "Mariners" be?) So, yeah, they suck. But that was the idea.

      @NinhLyUK  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you for your comments. To answer your points ...
      - You're entitled to your opinion of course, but as mentioned in my top comment - I'm entitled to mine. I don't mind people disagreeing with me, but this is a largely subjective video.
      - I am fully aware of the meaning behind the city jerseys. My qualm is that the links are tenuous and it's merely a marketing ploy/excuse to peddle more jerseys. Miami's jerseys were based from 'Miami Vice', but what's a TV show have to do with basketball? Minnesota's jerseys are inspired by Prince. What's Prince got to do with basketball? If you still think that this is to reflect the culture of these respective cities, you might as well put Donald Trump on the front of Knicks jerseys. Besides, no team needs 6 jerseys per season - do they?
      - I don't think the MLB jerseys were 'supposed' to look ridiculous. I believe that they were testing the market for an overhaul of the look of baseball jerseys. This isn't the first time a sport has done this (see hockey). The fact that the fans hated them, meant that these jerseys never saw light of day again. And for good reason.

    Vancouver Canucks jerseys in the early 80's induced a couple of seizures, for sure.

    I think the 90s may have the first time goalies could wear anything that wasn't just green (other colours were pretty rare). Anything made by Ribero for the early 90s in English Football deserves an honorable mention. Burnley, Coventry and Norwich had... 'Interesting' kits.

    Those 90s MLB Jerseys are just the future jerseys teams wore in 1999. Fun concept, but it shows how badly these have aged and how unlikely it is to see them in 2027.

    In Aussie rules football the worst guernsey (jersey) of all time was worn by the Brisbane Bears (1987 - 1991).

      Ninh Ly Fair point. I know that Port Adelaide has had a few, and North Melbourne (who are white with vertical blue stripes) went orange at one point. Most of the time though the horrid jerseys are made for special events like charity matches or “clashes”, so they differ from a lot of those suggested in the video in that the bad jerseys were substitutes rather than replacements.
      It’s an interesting topic though. I enjoyed the video.

    • @NinhLyUK
      @NinhLyUK  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, I love the Raps one. But the earned jerseys in my opinion are poorly designed and the links as to why they designed them that way are tenuous at best ... again, in my opinion.
