Athlone was a shitehole when I grew up and lived there until 1998. So dull and grey. Always fecking raining. Nowhere for young people to go but The Shack or Cloonans if you liked live bands. It changed to Biddy Mulligans but was never the same. There was an old nightclub on the corner right on the bridge. Cant remember its name now. And one Italian owned chip shop beside it. The town would not have lasted if not because of the Army. Bozos nightclub opened up. Is it still around?

The nightclub you are talking about was originally called Pearls but then changed to Ginkles. The Italian chipper is called The Genoa. I believe it just recently reopened or at least someone has taken it over with the intention to do so. Bozos is still there but has gone through several name changes. I think the most recent is The Piano Bar. Most places are actually still there but they have made Church Street/Dublin Gate Street into a narrow one way which is a complete disaster and they intend to pedestrianise Sean Costello street completely.

@@noeljr.7724 Yeah Ginkles with the all new lights as it was described. Narrow tall black walled stairs. Had a different name not Pearls. Cant remember it now. Yes the Genoa was owned by Italians called the Mallocoos. Well that's how we pronounced the name. The old fat woman woman that was behind the ice cream counter on the right side of the shop was always angry and the chips were either always under cooked and greasy or burnt to a crisp.
