I‘ve recently read that „the black color helps to reduce maintenance costs. When replacing a cockpit panel, chipping is a common occurrence around the edges. These are easier to paint over with the universal black than if you have to find the airline's exact fuselage color every time. @@TheNasaDude Not bad. In my opinion though, the L-1011 & DC-10 look better than the 727. I definitely think the A350 looks the best though. Especially on takeoff with the landing gear out.

Living in Toulouse and having lots of relatives engineers at Airbus, myself being a pilot; it is widely believed even at Airbus that the reason why the a350 got his mask was because the new window shape was too ugly coming off the assembly line. Having a mask that hid the shape underneath made it better looking; some engineer found a plausible scientific reason why the mask got implemented (honestly ? They try to fix a non existing problem) and all A350s rolled out like that. The mask then got popular and Airbus decided to put it on all it’s new lineup.
Yes, it is mainly a marketing stunt. The black looks awfull in combination with airline liveries that do not use black. The windows design looks awfull compared to the sleek four window design of the 787.

Thanks for this great video ! Just a question, I thought that the average 787 is significantly smaller in PAX than the average A350. If this true, then they are not direct competitor...
Yes you are correct. In terms of technology you can say they are direct competitors as they are the latest models (which are not a derivate of a previous one) But in terms of size and capacity, the A350 is larger than the 787

How bad is a hot window framed by cold metal? How much hotter is a black frame compared to a white frame at FL 360? My guess is the colour of the frame does not cause a significant improvement, at least not so much that it cannot be solved by any other conventional means such as more advanced insulation and sealing between the window and the frame. The black mask is just a marketing ploy, in my humble opinion. I do not agree with you on this one, dear Captain Joe.
Especially at night, the black will not heat up at all. And I wonder if it does heat up given all the airflow around it. Perhaps if it was insulating paint it could, but would be rather thick paint then.
So why didn't all other manufacturers start immediately to imitate the mask, if it is so critical? And even the other FLAT windows on the other Airbus planes get masks? They didn't need them for decades. So its obviously just an aesthetic thing by Airbus, nothing else.
