    1. Really don’t like flying, but once up there and no turbulence, it’s pretty much OK.
    2. After watching loads of aviation videos on TH-cam, I know all about flats and slaps and rodders (whatever that is?!)
    3. Sure, what can I win? A private Learjet?!
    4. Just send them to me.
As I just answered, flying is a bit of “near death experience” for me, but watching yours and others videos takes the focus away from “stalling airplanes” and instead gives me a lot of technical goodies.

As a potential customer, what do I want? As many engines as possible. A few years ago, someone was asking in a travel agent what type of aircraft will it likely be? The choice turned into being between a 747 and the at the time new twin-engined aircraft to fly the Atlantic. The customer preferred the 747, the agent asked why? The flier responded because it hasn't got 5 engines..

  • @langr752

I was just listening to my scanner and a plane leaving Albany NY had an engine fire indicator and requested to come back immediately. But they didn’t declare Mayday or Pan Pan. How common is this?

    • @Makatea

    787-8, 787-9 and A350-1000 don't compete with Any counterpart. A350 is more a 777 successor.

Living in Toulouse and having lots of relatives engineers at Airbus, myself being a pilot; it is widely believed even at Airbus that the reason why the a350 got his mask was because the new window shape was too ugly coming off the assembly line. Having a mask that hid the shape underneath made it better looking; some engineer found a plausible scientific reason why the mask got implemented (honestly ? They try to fix a non existing problem) and all A350s rolled out like that. The mask then got popular and Airbus decided to put it on all it’s new lineup.

I‘ve recently read that „the black color helps to reduce maintenance costs. When replacing a cockpit panel, chipping is a common occurrence around the edges. These are easier to paint over with the universal black than if you have to find the airline's exact fuselage color every time. In addition, the border helps to compensate for temperature differences. This reduces the forces on the windows. Cracks are less likely to occur.“

I appreciate the video, but respectfully as an engineer, I can not agree with your claim in the video.
This is nothing new, many Soviet jets (IL-76, Aeroflot airline livery), military fighter jet (metallic colored such as P-51, F-104) and some airlines with white livery (eg original Boeing 747, even as recently as the Air China 747-8 and Lufthansa retro livery) have black mask under windscreen. They have legit reason though - reduce glare caused by the nose, which is so why their mask don't go over the supports and top side of the window.
Glare can be a concern, but not likely in case of A350. If you take a look of other planes I mentioned (namely 747 and IL-76, F-104) you can see it is possible for sunlight reflect from the nose into the cockpit. 787 (I think looks better than A350) also have a curved flush windscreen, they didn't require anyone paint it black around them. That makes "geometry causes glare" more unlikely.
The difference of paint color on cooling is irrelevant on night flights. so if the expansion is a concern, the windshield heating system should taken care of it regardless of effects caused by sunlight.
To me (who studied in aerospace engineering), it is just for marketing and standing out in a picture, not targeting passengers, but airline executive. Similar to how peer pressure works, "Look, all your competitor are flying Airbus!" Pressure executives to consider Airbus to minimize uncompetitivness caused by airplane type difference, especially today most large airlines are not Boeing only or Airbus only.

How bad is a hot window framed by cold metal? How much hotter is a black frame compared to a white frame at FL 360? My guess is the colour of the frame does not cause a significant improvement, at least not so much that it cannot be solved by any other conventional means such as more advanced insulation and sealing between the window and the frame. The black mask is just a marketing ploy, in my humble opinion. I do not agree with you on this one, dear Captain Joe.

      @pizzablender 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Especially at night, the black will not heat up at all. And I wonder if it does heat up given all the airflow around it.
Perhaps if it was insulating paint it could, but would be rather thick paint then.

you mentioned WIFI, but when I fly Southwest or Spirit, The WIFI never works. Do you know why some airlines like S.W. has an app that you can download and while your in the air, it show's where you are while in flight, So I guess that part works with WIFI, but I can't watch such great shows like Captain Joe while flying because the WIFI never works. What gives Joe? lol

The A350 competes with the 777 in terms of size. The largest 787 is still significantly smaller than the smallest A350 - they are not in direct competition actually.

So why didn't all other manufacturers start immediately to imitate the mask, if it is so critical? And even the other FLAT windows on the other Airbus planes get masks? They didn't need them for decades. So its obviously just an aesthetic thing by Airbus, nothing else.
