    I should say that the name origin that you gave to Jersey, although used to be popular, is not considered outdated and incorrect (far from me to correct Name Explain on the etymology of a word, but trust me!). The name ‘Caesarea’ was actually a mixed up with a Roman text describing the Channel Islands, as the Romans actually called Jersey ‘Andium’ (Latinisation of the native Gallic name for the island ‘Andion’), but the name Caesarea stuck as the Latin name for the island regardless. The name of Jersey actually most likely came from a viking called Geirr and thus the name because Geirrsøy (Geirr’s Island), which became Jersey over time. The reason why our island was probably named after a viking is because Jersey was for many centuries a part of the duchy of Normandy (and you all know the story of that), and the King of the UK is still called the ‘Duke of Normandy’ and a few people here still speak the Norman language (Jèrriais).
    Other fun facts about Jersey relating to this video; we are so proud of our cows that all other foreign diary milk is banned from being sold in Jersey. So if you come to our lovely island, it is either Jersey milk or oak milk.
    It should also be said about the Jersey jumper that, despite us being such a tiny island, we were also the largest producers of knitting jumpers and stockings worldwide for many centuries. That is why the word ‘Jersey’ became so synonymous with the garment. In fact, our knitting craze got so bad, that our government had to ban men above the age of 13 from knitting so as to avoid men from neglecting their farming duties to sell jumpers! Even to this day, theoretically, it is completely illegal for me to knit anything.
    Also, being from the orginal Jersey, being constantly compared to refered to by the fake copy-cat is one of the biggest peeves for people here. Whether it is having to say “I’m from Jersey… no the original Jersey…. Old Jersey” or having to always search “Jersey Channel Islands” after every google search (though even ‘Channel Islands’ is also claimed by the yanks).

    As someone form New Jersey, we definitely learn in primary school that the island of Jersey is our states namesake. With that being said, many Americans and New Jerseyans simply refer to the state as “Jersey”, usually leaving the actual island of Jersey to be easily forgotten about.
    In most cases except for formal cases the “New” is constantly dropped. We refer to the Atlantic coast as the Jersey Shore, we split the state in either 2 or 3 sections (a passionately debated topic) with North Jersey and South Jersey and sometimes Central Jersey depending who you ask. Even the New Jersey devils hockey team mascot is known as the “Jersey Devil”.
    To many if not most Americans, the name Jersey is just an abbreviation of New Jersey or the sports wear. It has no correlation with the actual island of Jersey.

      That's true, but pretty much everyone in North America will use “Jersey” for just New Jersey. I'm not sure why.🤔
      New Hampshire isn't known as just “Hampshire”, so it probably isn't about the fact that's more than one syllable. Obviously, New Mexico couldn't be known as “Mexico”, but New Mexico has been known as such way before it was ever part of the U.S., even when it was part of Mexico.

    As a native Pennsylvanian, the neighboring state of New Jersey is always just "Jersey". It is interesting that people tend to say "Jersey" when referring to the state, but no one just says "York" to refer to New York. Guess it rolls off the tongue better, "Yeah, I had to take the Jersey Turnpike down to Philly."
    A little sports anecdote to tie together multiple of these uses for the word. Recently the New Jersey Devils of the NHL began to wear a black alternate jersey at times. The funny thing about this jersey is that the name used on the front on the sweater is simply "Jersey" not "New Jersey". The joke being that the Devils decided to label their jerseys so that players wouldn't forget. Like putting "Pants" on their pants or "Helmet" on their helmet. So you have the Jersey Devils wearing jerseys which say Jersey. And now I've typed the word jersey enough times that it is beginning to look weird.

    The "ey" suffix is used for islands around Iceland, being short for eyja (island). It originally comes from old norse which was a close relative of old english.
    Orkney, for example, was named Orkneyjar by the norse. "eyjar" is simply the plural form of "ey", but the -jar was later removed. Whenever someone says "Orkney Islands" I can't help but think "Orkn Island Islands".

    • @NorseNorman
      @NorseNorman ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The 'ey' in Jersey does actually come from the Old Norse 'øy', not directly from Anglo-Saxon, like Name Explain implies. Considering Jersey was settled by Vikings in the early 10th century, it makes sense.

    Born and lived in (old) Jersey for 26 years. Visited USA once and some guys asked where I was from - I said Jersey and they looked at me puzzled. "We're from Jersey! Where's your accent!?". To which I explained there was an old Jersey and that's where I am from. Very few people outside the UK (and several in the UK) that I've met have heard about our little rock.
    There's a blowhole on the north coast of Jersey called Devil's hole - I'm not particularly familiar with the history of it but I wonder if it was called that at the time that colonists were settling New Jersey and stories about it could've influenced the New Jersey Devil.

    I've lived my whole life in New Jersey (so far). We were taught in school about the Isle of Jersey and that the state was originally a Dutch colony that was taken-over by the British when the British set up a blockade around New York Harbor and annexed the colony. New Jersey was given to a King Charles on the Isle of Jersey who stayed loyal to him.
    There actually is a Cultural Ambassador from the Isle of Jersey here in New Jersey. Although we call ourselves "New Jerseyans" he said they refer to themselves as "Jerseymen".

    • @philipr10
      @philipr10 ปีที่แล้ว

      New Jersey was actually a gift from King Charles to George de Carteret, because de Carteret remains loyal to the monarchy during the Interregnum (the brief period when Britain was a republic). The Carterets were always the most noble family in the island. The Jersey parliament also got a royal mace.
      Recently, when George Floyd happened in America and people were calling for statues to be removed in England, someone called for a statue of Sir George Carteret to be removed from outside the pub named after him. And there's a square called Trenton Square they wanted renamed because Trenton was named after a slave trader.

      Not an expert at all on this, but I imagine the reason you call them Guernseys is after the knitted jumpers they make in Guernsey. Both islands were mad for knitting, each had a specific pattern for their knitted jumpers, I believe Jersey's traditionally had an anchor at the neckline whereas the Guernsey didn't.

    Caesaraea -> Jersey
    within Latin
    AE - > long open E sound (like a Texan drawling out "my caaaaaat saaaat on my baaaack")
    C [K to CH before] soft vowels (including above sound)
    after Latin
    CESAREA loses short A in the middle
    CESREA swaps SR into easier RS
    CERSEA
    and we can respell C as CH
    in English
    both E and EA give the sounds previously spelled as EA
    CHERSEA
    which in long version in many dialects becomes AY
    Where thou, Great Anna whom three realms obey
    dost sometimes counsel take and sometimes tea
    Respell: CHERSAY - basically Jersey, just make the last ey into a short -i sound and soften CH to J.

    I live in New Jersey and have all my left. I definitely know about the island because I looked it up as a kid (I’m in my mid-forties now). I figured if we were ‘New’ there had to be an existing one somewhere in Europe.
    It’s actually all the other places named Jersey in the US (outside NJ) that I hadn’t heard of.

    There’s also a town in Pennsylvania just west of Williamsport named Jersey Shore. I grew up in NJ and when moving to Ohio and driving along I-80, I saw the sign and laughed. I never knew about it, even being in Williamsport before, just never went more west

    I'm from New Jersey, the Jersey Shore (Belmar). I'd say it's relatively known that the state is named after the island of Jersey in the same way that we know where New York, New Hampshire, and New England get their names. In another point, when you mentioned the Jersey Devil, I thought you were going to bring it kind of full circle by stating the NHL hockey team, the New Jersey Devils are named after the creature and that the hockey team wears jerseys and that their alternative jersey has across the chest simply the word "Jersey."

    There were in fact three cattle breeds originating in the Channel Islands. The Guernsey was a larger dairy cow than the Jersey and was of a pale fawn colour in patches , broken up with a white background. It was noted for the bright golden colour of its milk, and was the main dairy breed in the USA in the 19th /early 20th century. It is nearly extinct now in the UK sadly. The Alderney was found in small numbers , and contributed in a small way to the genetics of the Ayrshire breed , which is about 5% Alderney. Sadly the occupying German forces on Alderney killed them all, and it is now extinct.

      There is also the story that Alderney Cattle got thier name because the boats transporting cattle from the Island's were reffered to as Alderney Packets. I know there is some current genetic research going on, be intresting to se ewhat conclusions are arrived at.

    As someone from Jersey, it’s very nice to see us being talked about. Do want to add something to how New Jersey got named after Jersey, the reason Sir George Carteret was given that piece of land to begin with was because during the civil war, Jersey stayed loyal to the royals, and the new king hid in Jersey after the previous king died. Later on he gave land in America to the people most loyal to him in during the civil war, which included the governor of jersey

      It was King Charles II we sheltered and he stayed at Hamptonne for a while and when he left for France he promised to allow the Island to self govern when he took the throne again. Our loyalty to the crown is also why (for a time) we were the only island to have the monarchs face on our money

    On the Island of Jersey in conjunction with the State of New Jersey's Devil, there's an area on the North called 'Devils Hole' it's an Alcove in a cliff face where it's suggested that the old town folk used to throw their rubbish i.e. it was (being French) the de (of) ville (town) hole - in this case dump. Classy. Thanks for clarifying that Jersey isn't New Jersey the amount of times such a mistake has screwed me over internationally is ridiculous, best wishes, Stefan, St. Martins, Jersey, Channel Islands.
