*Let me briefly explain BTS rapline to you!*
*RM* is a poet. You can not change my mind. His lyricism reads, sounds and works like poetry: a few words have multiple meanings and derivate in multiple chains of thought. Every time you listen to them, you discover new details, new ideas, new insights. Even when he's being straightforward, there's still some some philosophy or revelation or a big question or an aesthetic behind them. A poem is full of passion, but every word is chosen carefully, with intention. They're puzzle pieces, every piece has a place to create the full picture. It's a form of ART. WORDS WITH INTENTION.
*SUGA's* lyricism is like "an arrow straight to the heart": you immediately understand the emotion he's trying to convey, you don't need to even know what he's saying to know "what you're supposed to FEEL". What he says is always interesting too, and it has layers too, but, from the first listen.... You usually feel that same way after listening to his song 1000 times. Even when the song is sociopolitical or when it displays an idea, your first impression is a STAB OF EMOTION forever tattooed in your memory.
*J HOPE's* lyricism is like a playground, an amusement park. A place where magical things happen, where you are encouraged to bend the rules. It's full of bright primal colors, you walk around with bounce in your steps and inevitably feel the childlike impulse of starting to dance around, or start imitating his onomatopoeias and alibis. There's a quirky creativity in his choice of analogies and a pure-hearted kindness in his message. Even when he expresses anger or sadness, there's this sense of DYNAMIC RHYTHM that is always moving, always unpredictable and ALIVE.
*EDIT: Some examples to illustrate my description:*
    *RM:*
    - "From the time everyone is born / Life is more beautiful because it uses death as the collateral payment." (Life)
-"I grew a flower that can't be bloomed / In a dream that can't come true." (FAKE LOVE)
-"Why do you keep trying to hide under your mask, / when even the scars made by your own mistakes mark your constellations." (Answer: Love Myself.)
    *SUGA:*
    - "If you think you're gonna crash, accelerate even harder, you idiot" (Intro: Nevermind)
"Hip hop came to me gently / Like a little child looks for his mother, /it naturally permeated into my life (...) If loving this culture was a sin, would have died hundreds of times." (Hip Hop Phile)
    - 'To be honest, I miss you, but I'll erase you now / Because doing so hurts me less than resenting(blaming) you" (Spring Day)
    *J HOPE:*
The standard of happiness is you, and you walk that path / I wish to fill up faith / Like a piece of cake that is simple and filling (...) I wish, could be a Piece Of Peace." (P.O.P)
"Oh, I'm on top of the beat beat, wiggle wiggling. jingle jingling/roll rolling, beagle beagling (...) This is just for tasting, still a snack / My rap is a Korean meal that fills your stomach." (Cypher pt. 3)
"My sin, the dog that bites and tears my resting self/ "Don't do that," although shout it out, every day I'm hung up on accomplishments." (Dis-ease)
-"It's just that for once I want to draw a different picture of my life / A canvas dream // Beyond the boundary over there, let's feel it / Like the hole Alice fell into, like the path leading to Hogwarts, it'll be a world of mirages (Daydream)

I grew up in the age of Tupac, Biggie, Coolio, Snoop and DMX. While I liked some of their music, I really only listened to rap because my friends did. BTS RM, Suga, and J-Hope are the only rappers I listen to for pure enjoyment. I will listen to them even if I don't understand the lyrics because 1) I love their voices and 2) So far from the songs I've heard, their lyrics are trustworthy. I know they're not going to debase women, spread hate, or glorify drugs and alcohol. Thanks for another great reaction!

It would be better if you don't use "Jaeguchi" and "Lemoring" for lyric videos. They usually post the video within 30mins the song is out so most of their translations are off. They also get the members wrong for every group (for eg at the start this video shows it's jhope rapping after suga when it was still suga's verse) and last year we found out that these 2 channels are making money off of these lyric videos, money that should go the artist.
Also because the lyrics were off in this video , i highly suggest you check out "Ugh explained by a korean" by DKDKTV next. You'll be able to understand the song better and get all the korean references. Trust me you'll appreciate the song even more after watching that video.
Btw props to you for still getting most of the meaning down. You should also watch the live performance of ugh, you'll love the energy.

And had the nerve to tell ARMYS to LIST TO THEIR MUSIC TOO WHILE STREAMING ! For those who don’t understand, BTS would get no credit or views, and only the lyric channel would make money. They are crooks.

When it comes to BTS raplines, you need to understand their direction in rap
    J-Hope = describe
    Suga = to criticize
    RM = analyze

  • @emiiiilyxx
    @emiiiilyxx 3 ปีที่แล้ว +43

Firstly, you did incredible in your interpretation despite how the color-coded lyrics videos always screw up their translations, member lines, etc. They don’t capture the nuances. I’ve seen the comments on this video that are leading you in the right direction, though. Do not fear, it takes quite a time to figure out what contents are best suited for your journey into learning about them!
Secondly, I feel certain you will learn the difference between J-Hope (real name: Hoseok / nickname: Hobi) and Suga (real name: Yoongi / solo work: Agust D). Just as their rap styles are completely different, their personalities are polar opposite (in a good way!). I understand (and love) why you gravitated towards RM’s (real name: Namjoon) rap style. It’s very distinct. He has been heavily influenced by western artists and rappers and has said some of his biggest inspirations are Nas and Drake.
You’re doing great, ARMY 💜 Keep it up and don’t be afraid to ask questions!

That translation does the song a disservice 😂 but I think you nailed it when you said the chorus talks about getting mad at people that hate on them instead of putting their anger to good use. I think that's the whole point of the song: stating how haters and cancel culture are depreciating the value of anger (which, in a context of protest and revolution, can and has accomplished so much), using it just to hurt people over worthless matters. So now, when people get angry over the right reasons, their anger is being perceived as mindless hate. This song is so brilliant it has me rambling on youtube comments 😂 Thank you for reacting to it!! 🔥🔥🔥🔥

They have had a lot of haters. Especially from the rap community. A lot of Korean rappers said they sold out because they are in BTS. J-Hope didn't even rap until he joined BTS. You should definitely watch one or two of their guide videos. They are very helpful to see their journey and more about everything they do. Some suggestions would be This Is BTS: Introduction pt1 by Xceleste, and The Most Beautiful Life Goes On: Story Of BTS. Also more rap line, the cyphers and Outro Tear is amazing. Plus any of their solo work. And of course then you have the vocal line 😂 It's all good because it means you will be around a while and I love your reactions. You are one of the best I have seen. You are very intuitive and smart and you get and understand what they are conveying which is awesome. a couple other amazing suggestions that get over looked are J-Hope Boy Meets Evil and Ego, and their Best Dance Practices and Intros. Can you react to “BTS vs Kpop” by bby gang as well as his three part series titled “You’re Wrong About Kpop”/“The Media Is Wrong About Kpop”/“Kpop vs Orientalism”? His videos are utterly phenomenal, and I’d love it if you could check out his other videos out as well about Kpop & BTS. They are so well-researched and non biased. He does the work that so many western reporters don’t when researching and explaining BTS and Kpop. He encapsulates so well how truly phenomenal BTS is in the Kpop industry, the pop industry, and the music industry as a whole. It helps that with how well he does his research, he shows so much respect for eastern concepts and their impact on the western world. It’s beautiful. One of the best Kpop/BTS videos I have ever seen.

  • @miraaranel

You picked up the meaning really well! I think one thing to remember is that anger very recently changed Korean history, so I think they are saying that "anger that changes things" is a good thing whereas "anger to throw hate" is a bad thing. If you don't know, Korea had a serious tragedy in 2014 when a ferry carrying school children sank and the government allowed it to happen without rescuing the passengers/tried to cover it up (BTS' Spring Day touches on this). Koreans used their anger and protested for years and eventually many top ranking officials were placed into prison, including their president who was impeached.

Oh- RM is the easiest to recognize in the beginning, particularly because his accent and pronunciation are the closest to the way we speak in the west, but you’ll start to recognize their styles. They’re all distinct. Man I cannot wait until you get to Agust D but I’ll subscribe and wait patiently for you to do them in order :) you’ve got the best vibes man 💜

    J-HOPE - Airplane
RM - "DO YOU" or "CHANGE ft. WALE

They have their own Mixtape, and they have their own distinct aesthetic to it (recent mixtape)
    - RM = Mono
    - Suga = D2
    - jhope = Hope World
    Other Rap line songs
    - Cypher pt.1,2,3,4
    - ddaeng
    - Outro = tear
    - Outer = Her
    - Intro = Nevermind

But I really enjoy the way you try to break down the lyrics to understand the bigger picture. So today, you gained my "SUBSCRIBE". I'm glad you're enjoying the ride.

You did SO well at figuring out the message despite a crummy translation! Most lyric channels are problematic. These are the 4 channels I recommend based on their translation sources, they don't monetize, and they properly credit: Moonlight 52 Hz, BBTS9717, DIAL 6137, and af taehyung, in that preferred order. But for just straight reading lyrics, the doolset bangtan, muish, and bantang subs websites are the best.

In the last verse, the rap line is actually sarcastically paraphrasing what haters often say. "Ah you're a public persona, you get money, you should just bear the hate. If it were me, I could handle it easily." That's often the haters' excuse when they get called out on their hate. The entire theme of the song is BTS not giving a shit anymore about getting hated on, but getting angry at the idea that this kind of hate in itself exists at all when people could be directing their energy at more important world matters and injustices, especially when those people receiving hate for no reason are so terribly impacted by it.
The color coded videos are sometimes helpful to know which member is singing/rapping but they often get it wrong plus the translations are terrible. Still, you did a great job breaking it down despite the limitations of this video. Everyone's already suggested it but I hope you check out Doolset's website for this translation, or the dkdktv youtube channel for their explained video! I would love to see your reaction to a breakdown of UGH!

Yay, so happy that you've discovered this song! :) I hope you do a react to the DKDKTV explanation. The events that inspired this song are quite dark. From what I've heard, Korean netizens - knets - can be really brutal online. They don't just have fans over there, they have anti-fans, who dedicate actual time and effort to taking down their chosen targets. A year or two ago there were I think three celebrity deaths that were basically attributed to this kind of targeted attack. I remember it was a sobering time for Korea, with at least one tv show actually airing an apology for what part they might have played in fuelling the fire.

wow toney you really translate everything so beautifully and always seem to hit it on the head. i love to hear you break it down and what goes on in ur head. ugh is calling out the petty reasons to use your anger towards bc anger is a precious emotion that has actual power to change things for the better if used the right way. bts are angry at useless anger. check out "dkdktv ugh explained by a korean". also for ddaeng refer to them too. we didnt get to experience ugh sadly due to the pandemic. i was legit gonna bring an ugh flag with me when the song came on

The rap line were actually the first members of BTS. RM was literally the reason why the group was formed. His producer saw so much potential in him (at age 15, might I add) that he decided to start a hip hop group. Both RM and Suga had made a name for themselves as underground rappers, and Suga was brought in not long after RM. J Hope was already pretty famous as an underground street dancer and was even a part of a dance group. He tried out for another label but didn't make the cut, then moved on to Bighit, where he got in (the rest of his group didn't). BTS was even known as "J Hope's group". He didn't originally know how to rap, but learned with the help of Rm and Suga (that's why he has a very melodic style of rap). After they had a good amount of members, their producer decided to make it into an idol group instead. All of the other current members left except for these three. Eventually, the rest of the members were scouted and joined the group.
I also really love your reactions, btw. Watching your excitement and your growth is really fun as a fan. BTS keep bringing more and more people in lmao
I'd really like to see you react to No More Dream, I Need U, or Spring Day (they're some of my favorite songs with mvs)

Amazing. You're the only reactor I've seen who got most of the meaning right just from watching one lyric video. I think you will really like the DKDKTV "Ugh explained by a Korean" video. They explain a lot of Korean cultural references that enhance the meaning of the song. They have also done explainer videos for Ddaeng and Baepsae which are pretty much required watching if you want to fully understand those songs.
Ugh! is the song I was most eager to see in concert prior to the quarantine, but the BTS concert tour was cancelled, so we're still waiting to hear it with a live audience. They did one live performance at their Bang Bang Con Online concert last summer, and it was great, but I still want to see it in person. BTS is always amazing, but they are best in front of a live audience.

Your reaction to Ugh... dude, at first you were pretty off the mark. BUT, as the video went on, I could see the gradual progression of you grasping the meaning behind the lyrics. Less than 7 minutes in and you've already stumbled through (some extremely entertaining and insightful) stream of consciousness that was getting more and more on the mark by the damn second. By the end, you were so on point I was stunned. You definitely did your homework and I appreciate the hell out of that. Color me impressed, fam! You've got a knack for interpreting lyrics and I'm here for it! I've been a BTS fan since their debut in 2013... you are the first reactor I've seen who is new to BTS and really gets rap line's lyrics on a near intuitive level.

Just so you know this channel is knwn for messing up the lyrics and messing up whos rapping what. The lyrics on this dont even make sense. To sum it up, UGH is basically them asking haters to use that anger they've on something useful. Like real corruption in the world etc.. instead of hating on artists.

Again your perspective has added to my understanding. Ugh took me a while to understand, but just replacing the word "feces" with "BS" and all of it's connotations makes sooooo more sense! 😂
Also your comment on the line about pent-up anger: one kind of anger *should* have been used to change the world (shades of "a dream deferred"), but another kind of anger, which is only harmful, should have been not stored up, but *released* because it was about something unimportant.
