- In 1987, Morten Frost of Denmark faced Icuk Sugiarto of Indonesia in the Men's Singles Final at the YONEX All England.
For Sugiarto, he was aiming for a first title in England, whereas Frost already had three under his belt.

For me, Morten Frost was poetry in badminton motion - still the most elegant champion badminton player to ever grace the court. It's almost like badminton ballet on court. Tall, remarkably fluid and intelligent player and gent who made it look so effortless on court. He plays like he's floating on court. Never seen any player like Frost, even today.
Icuk Sugiarto was just such a strong player, built like a tank and and classic brute of a powerful stroke player from Indonesia. His was a stout, handsome and very fit physique. He just looks great in his attire here. To get those killer quads and calves..... we can only guess his training regimen. He had great patience in all his games. Classic singles stroke player as well.
In this game, Icuk did not get into his groove somehow. Classic long game rallies where stroke play was the order of the day; I remember Frost was accompanied by stroke play stalwarts like Han Jian, Misbun Sidek, and Rudy Hartono all of whom had some serious attack in their arsenal but they were really more patient than most. Who will forget excellent stroke player/smashers like Liem Swie King and Luan Jin? Players from the past made badminton such a well-loved and visually entertaining game with their different styles and personalities.
Then came the newer, younger cohort of Chinese players like Yang Yang, and Zhao Jian Hua, whom I think arguably set the pace for faster, attacking badminton, with electrifying leaps a few feet into the air and super sharp and fast smashes - and whose influence I believe, with other players from that time, set the foundation for the evolution of today's game.
Today's singles as we all know is much "sharper" and a little more "erratic" perhaps, almost frenzied for the kill.... much faster overall - they'd kill the shuttle than lob high ones to and fro at any given chance. Chops, and smashes. Drives. Attacking lobs. No one is interested in giving their opponents time to drag the matches into endurance bouts lasting more than 2 hours on end. Much more attack at any given opportunity, less stroke play build up. So tactics have certainly changed from yesteryear to get the points and win matches faster, than later.

Sebenarnya Icuk lebih sering menang lawan Hansen, namun lebih sering kalah lawan Yang Yang. Sementara Hansen lebih sering menang lawan Yang Yang. Segitiga yg membingungkan..

What's the string tension used back then?
@@NMad-kp2bu Hi. I strung his rackets at 26lbs tension. He was using Babolat badminton string and the Carlton boron classic racket. I used my ektelon stringing machine.
@@anthonystevens6510 Thank you 👌 Wow, I'm surprised that it could take such high tension. Is it considered a safe (within its limits) tension or would it shorten the racket life considerably?
@@NMad-kp2bu Morten used to give me about 8 rackets and 12 sets of string as we knew some strings would break towards the end of the stringing. Babolat string was very difficult to string with as you needed to wax it a bit before stringing, as it was prone to twisting, fraying and then breaking. I never broke any of his rackets, but if they started to go out of shape a bit i had to reduce the tension slightly. Also, Morten probably did not worry about his rackets breaking as he was sponsored.
With due respect to these great players, the quality of badminton has definitely increased tremendously. A lot of it has to do with the improvements in rackets and shuttle cocks.

I think you mean the camera quality has improved tremendously. Generally, people are slowly getting weaker - both mentally and physically.

@@ceazur4985 That has nothing to do with strength or weakness, more so tactics. Proper full length clears over and over especially out of position at times are heavier to do than for example smashes, at least when shuttles are normal or slower speed.
The quality of understanding the game and the constraints/limitations faced by earlier generations has decreased tremendously. The game will always "improve" with better equipment and new training methods--what needs to improve is the ability to respect champions of earlier eras
Look at Sugiarto's calves. His smashes are very powerful. Those days, jumping smashes are very rare.
I think it was the ancient greeks who said that strong calves are of utmost importance for the best performance.

Tahun 1987 usia saya 20 tahun, suka badminton saat usia 10 tahun, saya suka legend single saat itu Rudy Hartono, Liem swee king, Doble nya christian hadinata-Cuncun Johan Wahyudi dll, namun saat itu olahraga ini termasuk olahraga mahal, beda dengan bola atau teniS meja, akhirnya ya belajar otodidak liat2 mereka yang mai. Di club', skeeping saya ganti tambang jemuran, lari lari , bandul tangan dengan botol isi pasir, push up sit up, belum.punya raket , aku pakai papan Triplex, dll, saat usia saya 60 tahun Alhamdulillah masih suka badminton, yang pasti dengan modal latihan otodidak , Masya Alloh

Kerasa beda masanya ya. Kalo skrg lalu lintas shuttlecock makin tipis di atas net, pemain makin penting baca gerak dan kebiasaan gerak tubuh lawan. Konsekuensinya gerak shuttlecock makin cepat, perlu ekstra fokus, ekstra stamina.

Jarang pemain Indonesia yang fisiknya kayak Icuk, otot kakinya besar, stamina luar biasa, hasil latihan keras luar biasa. Jawa tulen.
Sekali latihan fisik lari, Icuk bisa 10 atau 20km... mangkanya staminanya utk main rally panjang kuat banget... kecuali pas kondisi drop (flu, cedera, dll)
Jaman dulu (sistem pindah bola) stamina lebih penting. Baru teknik dll. Liat aja Susi Susanti gitu2 aja tekniknya monoton tapi punya stamina yg luar biasa bisa juara dimana2. Krn visi bermain Susi menguras stamina lawan. Kalo ketemu lawan tangguh biasanya kalah dulu set 1 krn tujuannya menguras stamina lawan di set 1 baru dihajar di set berikutnya saat lawan sudah kehabisan stamina
Keunggulan absolut Indonesia yg hilang krn penerapan rally point adalah stamina , rally point tdk memungkinkan pemain "bernafas" dan mengatur tempo skaligus merancang strategi, skrg teknik, respon dan daya serang jd dominan.ini tujuan ibf agar badminton semakin mendunia, tidak ada gap fisik yg terlalu jauh antara negara dua musim dan empat musin
Icuk satu SMP dgn saya dan Pak Jokowi di Solo. SMP 1. Dulu waktu remaja latihan fisiknya memang di atas rata2 pemain lain. Paha dan betisnya gempal sekali.
Banyak yg komen engga tau beratnya cari point bulutangkis jaman sistem 15 point.. yg harus pindah serve dulu baru bisa dapet point itu juga klo pas serve bisa bikin lawan mati langkah.. klo engga ganti serve lagi.. beda lah ma rally point kaya sekarang...
Betul sistem klasik, main tunggal ya gitu bakal capek belum lagi yaaa rajet jaman dulu beda sama raket jaman sekrang

These rallies don't exist in modern badminton. The stamina required to play these rallies is just unbelievable.
The commentators' suggestion that "perhaps Suigarto is trying to wear him down" is a statement of ignorance. Morten Frost was one of the fittest players of his generation. He could run all day and he loved a long first set, even if he lost it.

Tension about 20 - 22 lbs. Possibly natural gut. Zhao Jianhua had one of the highest tensions of the time at 26 - 28. Old racquets like the ones used here still had steel frames. They couldn't take as much tension.
