They did the “entire roster applauds” thing for Ric Flair as well in 2008. Flair was a lot older then than Cena is now, but still. Even Undertaker went out and applauded. Orton, when he was a psychotic heel as WWE Champion and punting people in the head, was also out there clapping.
Same with Edge when he originally retired in 2011.
WWE has been doing the “kayfabe is suspended during certain legend segments” thing for a while now.

    • @battman0624

    • @speranza9415

I don't know if you should consider this as a momentary suspension of kayfabe, a heel can be an asshole and still respect a legend that he grew up watching and possibly being a fan of, but then again that's just me having more respect for kayfabe than WWE has had in years, so... 🤷🏻‍♂️

Great to see John Cena. I know Corny was all smiles seeing one of his prized pupils get a classy tribute.
I grew out of the anti Cena camp once I saw how he much impacts people especially children. Him turning heel just to switch it up pales in comparison to what he brought to people worldwide being the good(albeit cheesy) guy. He's as casual friendly as it gets.
Plus regardless of the in ring character the man himself is charismatic and has taken criticism including neckbeard level hatred online and in person better than most could. Still worked hard and remained professional. P.S. Cena taught me about the existence of 'cohabitate agreements'... Look it up fellas lol 👀

I’m sorry, but Cena was never as over as Cornette claims here 0:42. In fact because they never turned Cena heel like they did Reigns they actually hurt themselves. They should of turn Cena full heel after Mania 22 when everyone was starting to cheer for Triple H again and boo Cena. I can’t recall Austin or Rock being heavily boo as much as Cena was and still being baby face. Cena was the top guy way longer then he should of been and they should of handed his spot over to some else like Punk or Bryan around 2011/2012/2013, but they kept Cena in as the top guy and drove millions of people away from WWE.

    • @chrisortiz8072

@@chrisortiz8072 About a month ago I was rewatching old RAW and Smackdown episodes from 05 and 06 you can see from the time people were cheering Cena to where they started to boo him. Cena was never EVER as over as an Austin or Rock. Cena was pushed AS A TOP GUY BUT WAS NEVER NATURALLY OVER as an Austin or Rock. Hell Triple H was over more most of his career then Cena was and Triple H was a heel most of his career. That’s how fake Cena was as a legitimate top guy who was REALLY truly over with fans and he was always being pushed on the fans and those people didn’t want that and they left never to return.
Cena May not be the main reason wrestling sucks today, but he did a great job of driving off a lot of the people who watched this before he got into it. They should of replaced him much much sooner then they did and I mentioned Punk and Bryan just as examples. They were pre popular in 2011/2012/2013 and could of easily been pushed and marketed better then Cena was at the time.

@Rathi a mma got same ratings as ecw roughly on a good night. Fans who became lapsed started to watch mma because they used wrestling as a launch pad and copied vince McMahon. Dana has even said he took a thing or 2 from vince. Remember they did that version of tough enough right after wrestling to help boost the product. Some watched both but from my experience it was mostly lapsed. Remember around this time wrestling lost 3 million viewers at least. Kids around 15 watch both.

    • @chrisortiz8072
      @chrisortiz8072 2 ปีที่แล้ว

@Rathi a edge was popular, rvd, and jeff. 2 of them ruined it with drugs. Batista was hugely over but always getting injured. Aside from that let's not act like vince won't push who he wants until people just accept that's the way it is going to be. Also as I said during cena era we post at least 3milliom viewers or more. Went from 9 million to 6 and then end of cena run around 3?

I caught on to the fact that Cena said nothing of real note beyond "Thank you" to the fans, which made the situation interesting to me. While it was good having him celebrate his 20th years with the WWE, he hasn't really been on TV and it's an odd coincidence that McMahon would bring him back while this investigation is going on. Not to mention that McMahon was the one personally issuing the introduction.
But Brian and Corny hit the nail on the coffin when they describe what McMahon is doing here. It really is a master class in crowd psychology/manipulation because of how carefully crafted everything was. I saw this thing as McMahon pulling a favor from Cena to help him in this particular time to remind people of what the WWE has done over 20 years with a guy like Cena as their top guy, the endearing relationship with his fans, the Make-A-Wish (emphasizing this similar to how George W Bush was at a kindergarten reading stories when 9-11 happened), etc. all in attempting to demonstrate "well, maybe we had this one incident but look at the rest of the good we do!"
Funny thing is that the ratings apparently held steady (maybe down according to one report) but my theory was that McMahon not only wanted to show what made the WWE big, he saw the increase in ratings with his presence and is continuing to use that momentum, especially with the investigation to show he's inextricably linked to the WWE's success (and ongoing success). Which could be true but it's a bit surprising that this night wasn't bigger. Then again wrestling is down across the board and the thing with the Cena appearance to me was that the crowd didn't seem as loud as they could have been compared to back in the day. I thought Claudio's appearance on Forbidden Door got as good if not a better reception. And if Cena didn't work the crowd (because he's smart), they would've come off a bit flat at some parts. So it'll be interesting to see where all this leads.

The stuff he does for the kids with Make A Wish really changed my view on him a few years ago because it means something giving back to the kids. He was a fan growing up, and he gives back to the kids who love wrestling too. That means a lot to keep the machine that is pro wrestling going. Not to mention his roles in movies have been pretty good which shows that talent in the ring really does work for Hollywood.

Cena is a star, no matter how much you might hate how he was pushed during his time in the WWE He also has proven to be a great human being, who earns everyone's respect. I'd be happy to see him do more matches and being an opponent for Theory would be a great way to make Theory a real deal. Also, the fact that Bryan Danielson, Big Show, and Jericho got to pay their respects to Cena was great, and can Vince and Tony finally get their heads out of their asses and give us the real "Forbidden Door." a WWE/AEW show. It would bring in so much money and hype for both companies, and if they can do little things like this, why not more? Everyone benefits and everyone has something to look forward to. I know a lot of it also has to do with Vince and Tony's egos. I will agree as big as Cena was it was odd having the heels cheering for him. I'll never forgive Cena for burying the Nexus. David Otunga would have been a 10 time world champion by now if it wasn't for Super Cena.

This was the only thing on Raw that I was looking forward to they should've use Cena's 2008 titantron as a throwback since it was his 20th anniversary.

Cents biggest problem for me was in-ring. He was just nowhere near the calibre of the generation before him. He did improve near the end when they brought in guys like Styles and Owens but before that he put on some real stinkers and his character was so stale for so many years.

Here's the thing this man Cena was "always" a good ass wrestler the problem is since he was the top guy they restricted him so hard to the point you seen him doing a handful of moves just to keep him healthy and safe
