Rick actually did a small club tour in the early 90’s just to get a feel of whether or not his fan base was still there. And of course, we were. I have met him three times and he is an awesome down to earth, humble human being. In my opinion, one of the greatest songwriters ever.

In 1988 when Rock Of Life came out he was going through severe Depression because he was never allowed to fully mourn the death of his father because of his hectic life at the time and Everything he kept inside and suppressed all came to the surface plus he was doubting if he was going to be a good father and then he had a ATV Accident and shattered his Shoulder so Rock Of Life Died and all touring stopped Such a Wonderful album and on Success Hasn't Spoiled Me Yet April 24 1981 was the first dedication to his Father Passing Away.

@robertvance1873 His depression started in 1985. The last leg of his tour was either Lubbock or Abilene,Tx. Then came the falling out with Dana Miller ( a lot of money Rick did not receive) his 4 wheeler accident, marriage, children, turning 40. He already had severe depression and this was a pile on. He could be a shy person, and at the time, he was uncomfortable with meet and greet. I know that because I was walking with him in Austin, Tx. He was turning into a room to greet hundreds! He turned to me and said some words. I will just say the guy was exhausted.

I just happened across the Shock/Denial/Anger/Acceptance CD in the store when it came out, and I bought it because I'm a huge Rick fan. When I listened, I was blown away. Part of the reason Rocket Science was bad is because Rick was made to rock, and him doing country just felt like pandering. That said,'We Connect' is one of my absolute favorites.

Come on Misty Water Woman is a great song from Comic Book Heroes. How many Singers have wrote a song about picking up a young woman who is a Ghost, and his 1974 album has been released it was put on the shelf after the Record company went Bust, and One of his albums called The Day After Yesterday Should have been on your list.

At the time you made this video, my top 2 Rick Springfield albums were also #1 Shock and #2 Oz just like you had. But now a year later, the top of my list has been shaken up: #1 Automatic, #2 Shock and #3 Oz. Automatic sounds to me like Shock Part 2, every song on it is a banger. And the fact there are 20 songs on Automatic versus the 17 songs on Shock is what makes it my favorite Rick Springfield album of them all.

Now that a few months have passed, what are your thoughts on "Automatic"? IMHO, while not as strong as some of his previous Big Albums, it's good to hear him return to basic rock and roll. I tend to agree with you about Automatic. It's catchy and the songs are short, which is smart nowadays. He definitely experimented with instrumentation too and I think he excels when he does this - see Tao and Rock Of Life.
I also like that his lyrics are not run of the mill. He knows how to write and sing about different and new things.

Orchestrating My Life (2019), The Red Locusts (2021) & even From the Vault (2010) - All have some nice songs only found on these albums.
I have to leave my Ranking of his best albums, just as a different opinion:
    1. Rocket Science - (Best Songs: "Down" - Favorite song of his, "That One", "Earth to Angel", "Crowded Solitude" , Pay it Forward" & "Found").

    3. Automatic - (Best Songs: "This Town", "Exit Wound", "She Walks with the Angels" & "Come Said the Girl")
    4. Rock of Life - (Best Songs: "Honeymoon in Beruit", "Rock of Life", "World Start Turning" & "Woman")
    5. Living in Oz - (Best Songs: "Human Touch", "Affair of the Heart", "Souls" & "Tiger by the Tail")
    6. Karma - (Best Songs: "Beautiful Prize", "ItsAlwaysSomething", "Ordinary Girl" & "Prayer")
    7. Shock/Denial/Anger/Acceptence - (Best Songs: "Will I?", "Wasted", "Invisible Girl" & "Eden")
Best Songs from other Albums: "Jessie's Girl" (Obviously), "You & Me", "Let Me In" (This can also be found on Rocket Science), "Don't Talk to Strangers", "Bop 'Til You Drop", "Our Ships Sinking", What's Victoria's Secret?", " I Get Excited", "Love is Alright Tonight", "One Passenger", "Kristina", "Believe in Me" & "Welcome to Your Bright New World"(Non-Album Single).
Also, "Waiting for a Girl Like You" - My favorite remake version of his. My favorite Christmas Songs of his: "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen", "Do You Hear What I Hear?" & "Christmas with You".

I love those first two solo albums after Zoot. Even though you couldn't hear it as much in the songs, his Aussie accent was still as strong as ever. It would be a few more years before he perfected the American accent for his acting career. You mentioned a lot of great songs from that first album but my favorite is 1000 Years. It just really hits me in the right place. I never heard those albums growing up and I was too young to relate to the lyrics of most of those songs anyway. However that third album was right in my wheelhouse. That of course was the Mission Magic LP. I heard all those songs by watching the TV show as I was around 8 or 9 when that was on. I can see why one wouldn't take it seriously but as someone who grew up during the golden age of bubble gum music on Saturday morning cartoons, I loved the genre. Later on when Working Class Dog came out I was in high school and those songs of course I could relate to very well. I think that, combined with his meteoric rise on General Hospital, helped him go from niche material to super hit maker.

A couple of the songs mentioned were big hits for Aussie bands. State of the Heart was a hit for Mondo Rock, and I'll make you Happy was a 60's hit for the Easybeats.
And regarding his love of the Beatles music he was in a very successful band here in Australia in 1970 called Zoot and did a proto Heavy Metal cover of Eleanor Rigby. It got to number one here I believe.

Brad, not sure if you know this, but as a musician (I am a professional musician) We CAN pull our material down from the public, off Spotify. Especially considering the low pay rate from streaming services..and the pain of the material on SDAA. If the artists own their own publishing, and has the know-how...we can pull our releases.

    • @BradCarlMusic
      @BradCarlMusic  ปีที่แล้ว

I guess that makes sense. If he owns the publishing on that one - and I think he does because from reading his book I recall he did everything himself.
I am a musician too and have my own music on Spotify. I just assumed that all massively popular artists didn't have that kind of control - especially when you look at Taylor Swift's situation. It's all complicated.
But you make a good point - and it's probably true that it's simply not out on streaming services due to the obvious reasons - painful.

On my way back from a wedding
I drove round some of the old streets
I got swept up by the memories
Of cold nights and warm sheets
I parked outside the house we'd lived in
I tried to think of all the pain
But all I remembered was the laughter
And the precious trust we can't reclaim
      There are no second prizes
And there will be no consolation wreath
We may as well miss by a mile
As miss by the skin of our teeth
They all thought we were some sure thing

That I knew you were waiting for
So I watched the death of innocence
Of the young dreamer at life's door
This world can tear your soul to pieces
If you give it half a chance
There are no rules to remember
There are no written steps to the dance

Pointing the direction to the great promised land
I remember me all petrified and restless
Wondering what you were hiding in the other hand
      Everybody keeps a lonely heart
      And everybody gets that feeling
      Everybody needs another heart
To give a little bit of healing to a battered soul

You nailed it! I agree with your album countdown completely. Comic Book Heroes, unfortunately, was a product of the record producers pushing him towards a teeny bopper role, which he hated. Beautiful Feelings was re-released as The Early Sound City Sessions, but using the ORIGINAL music. I tend to like this version much better than the 80's release. His SDAA album is absolutely his BEST album. I even made a remix version of the song "I Don't Want Anything From You" on my channel. I wanted to give it some kind of electronic sound, but of course the original is the best. I was just having some fun with it. Also the Tao album had another good song on it that I don't believe you mentioned. Dance this world away, which had a music video. Tear it all down was another great song from the Rock of life album. That cartoon was my first introduction to Rick and his music. The soundtrack album is unbelievably expensive to track down on vinyl but the Japanese CD reissue and cartoon DVD set is not. The fact that Rick was able to make songs at that period that could both please bubblegum children AND hip teenagers is a miracle in itself. It's a masterpiece to me. Wow. Comic book heroes is the one ive been listening to a lot lately. It also has Believe in me, which is one of the most evocative, sensitive songs ever. I gotta say, you dont really sound like much of a fan at all. Shock denial has some great songs (angels of the disappeared is among my faves) but he was going through something vocally that didnt sound quite like him, and that clear, sharp edge to his voice that i love so much, but it was back with songs for the end. But i think theyre all awesome.

@@BradCarlMusic Well, I wrote that before I heard the WHOLE countdown, but just judging by my own opinion of Rick's music, and I do try to be as objective as I can be, but I LOVE pretty much everything he's done. He just really knows how to put a song together, movement, progressions, melody, phrasing, vocal performance, dynamics, and he has a way of infusing an emotional element into his music that is absolutely palpable. And Believe in Me, and Misty Water Woman are both on CBH, and they are two of my faves of his.
