Maomao didn't even know who was in there, she only knew a life was in danger and she ran to stop that from happening.
Maomao just knew what to do.
Also, Aoi Yuuki's performance here is incredible. You can really feel the desperation in her voice.

She kinda remembered his voice so she did, she knew who probably was behind her and it disturbed her a little but she had mission in mind so chose to not act on it and go save someone that needed saving.

@@gulox8241 they're not talking about Lakan. They're talking about how Maomao only knew that someone might be in danger while performing the ritual and didn't know it was Jinshi.
Lakan had the look like he was about to end that man’s entire lineage. It’s always the calm ones that are the most scary when angered

@@melindoranightsilver9298 I was about to say, watching this clip side by side with the scene that Maomao first hears Lakan's name, the faces they made are almost identical.
the LN writer shared what happened to the guard afterwards, behind the scenes. He was punished and tortured by Lakan, however afterwards returned to service, and after few years was even promoted.

Man must been humbled beyond belief. Prolly turned into the calmest, most reasonable guard in the entire Palace. Not because that was his nature, *but because of trauma.*

I said it before, and I'll say it again.
He isn't a great one, not by any stretch of the idea. But make absolutely no mistake, Lakan IS A FATHER. And they gave you everything you needed to understand that in that single moment. The air died and went quiet, and all you got was a real close look at the absolute livid rage in Lakan's eyes; like he wants nothing more than to behead him right then and there. Which, not sure if people picked up on, is veeerrry similar to the split second frame we got when Jinshi mentioned Lakan to Mao; that angry face which told us how much she detested him.
All in all, that guard is probably never heard from again. I wouldn't be surprised if, following this ordeal, Lakan had that guard taken care of. And to be honest, I imagine Jinshi would have helped Lakan of such an event occured.
And then Maomao’s bought of laughter next episode. She really is his daughter.
I wonder how much she knows, and how much is actually Lakan's fault, and if she aint majorily angry at him for Not acting appropriately more so than for doing too much. Dunno I am an anime only. I DO NOT MIND SPOILERS OF ANY CAPACITY.
It s possible he abandoned the mother but wants Maomao. and made Maomao angry af in return.
The author explained what happened to that guard later. He was severely beaten and whipped as a punishment, but years later Lakan promoted him because he saw that while he was hotheaded he truly was a talented man of character and principles who learned his lesson
The situation just wasn't really that transparent. Imagine if some random girl in our times tried to barge in into the conference with president, prime minister and other officials present. Secret Service probably would have just shot her no questions asked
@@MonographicSingleheaded she knows everything, even more than he does, but you know that now. her detestation of him is... well, once the stubbornness fades, all that's left is convenience. it would be a logistical nightmare and potentially a national crisis if she actually lived with him, because neither of them would ever get anything done. he'd be too busy bothering her, and her too busy being bothered.
can't really tell if he was mad because his daughter got hurt or because of some other sick twisted reason since he looked pretty shocked after he saw Jinshi and MaoMao coming out of there alive
Maybe he is shocked that his Daughter was Hurt and Not Moving?
I was under the impression that he was expecting one of them to be dead but then shocked when it turns out both were fine.
Edit: I was also under the impression that he was part of the assassination plot so might have accidentally misunderstood that
He was mad because his daughter was hit
He was shocked because Jinshi, someone of incredibly high status, was carrying out a servant girl, signifying how important she is to him
he is mad bc maomao was hit, he is a really dotting father xD

There's more but, yeah, he's an amazingly good person towards his lil girl, she's just too stubborn to see the whole picture, hence her reactions most of the time
Lakan: “She’s hurt….so here’s what we’re going to do: You two soldiers fight each other, and then both of you become eunuchs.”
Soldier: “You mean the loser becomes a eunuch.”
Lakan: “I know what I said…”
Amazing voice acting from Aoi Yuki!👏 The pain and desperation in her voice feels so real!
Probally the best VA work in this currently running set of Animes.
@@MentorX14 I honestly think Gushing Over Magic Girls MC shows potential, especially considering it's literally her first (anime) lead role, w/ only 2 supporting roles listed for her, at least on MAL
Lakan didn't like it when he saw Jinshi patting Maomao on the shoulder and imagine how angry he would be when he saw someone swinging a club right at Maomao's face...
In the outro, the guards are gone. So I assume the guards are packing up to go to the front.

Props to Maomao. She took a war club to the face and still had strength to run inside the temple and push Jinshi away from the falling beam. Girl is built tough.
I swear to god Aoi Yuki performance in this show is solid gold. The good, bad and serious moments in which she acts. She deserves an award.
Also, Maomao must be protected at all cost

Lakan is a strategy genius, so whatever he had planned for that guard was complex and brutal
Pretty soon it should show more about this guys backstory. He does love her mom and does care for maomao. Sadly unfortunate events happened that caused this whole dynamic between them. I think someone else said it best here. He is angry they stuck her and surprised that jenshi is carrying her later due to his status because it shows he cares for her.
This show has peak voice acting from all the characters, especially Jinshi, MaoMao, and Lakan

At 2:31 Lakan a.k.a. "the sly fox" shows his real emotions "how dare you hurt my daughter" 2:37 then quickly goes back to sly fox mode (polite negotiation) but he's already taken note.
Not surprisingly, the guard gets whipped and severely beaten on Lakan's orders (author's comment on Twitter/X) May seem an odd person, but he's cunning and vengeful.
Damn, I haven't seen the episode yet but I bet Jinshi would make that guys life a living hell if he saw what happened
He would have to get in line after Lakan. Even though they can't fight, I'm sure Concubines Gyokuyou and Lihua would find ways to make his life he'll as well.

He cares about his daughter and her mother, a lot unfortunate circumstances kept him away from her. He even still has the dismembered pinky on him he received many years ago. He was crying when he finally reunited with Maomao’s mother.
I hope we get this guys backstory this season

From what I heard. There is a line (maybe in the novel version or something) which confirms he definitely did get beheaded.

The author posted on Twitter that he was punished in some way by Lakan, but i dont think he clarifies how.
However, because he was TECHNICALLY doing his job, he wasn't killed and received a promotion 2 years later.
Maomao definitely got her death glare from Lakan.
And that guard that struck Maomao was never seen again…
On the bright side, at least the guard can only die once.

Prosopagnosia or no, Lakan is a brilliant tactician and the head of one of the empire's most prestigious clans. Even the emperor himself doesn't want to cross him. Maomao has solid reasons for disliking him, but this is one individual you'd definitely want on your side.

Correct. And he wasn't supposed to hit her to begin with, it's a breach of protocol in the time of a holy ritual.
@ro Yeah it would ruin the ritual grounds (the courtyard still counts, hence all the mid ranking priests standing outside, w/ the mid-high ones inside)

The author clarified on a Twitter post that he was punished, but not executed, and was allowed to keep his job, and would in 2 years' time get a promotion.
He is A Guard. An Imperial Guard Should Prevent No unauthorized persons especially NOT ROYALTY From entering! Force is included if inturder is REALLY UNWANTED a smack like that is generally permissable. Unoffically he fcvk up not realising MaoMao was good useful friend/servant of his bosses😂

Some masterpiece deserve anime adaptation but they just dont get any

I was a little disappointed with this episode, though. Episode 19 ended pretty emotionally with a touching song and melancholy, but this episode totally ignored that MaoMao almost died by rescuing Jinshi. It's as if he doesn't care or keeps his distance now from MaoMao since she begins to feel a certain closeness and attachment towards him. Maybe she won't be as interesting to him anymore as she was when she made those hateful and scary faces when she saw him. Plus, they should have mentioned what happened to the guard who beat up MaoMao.

Lakan is my number one suspect. He’s devious, dangerous, shady as hell. Detective Maomao is on the case- her instincts and intellect are never wrong; she hates him with reason, and that’s good enough for me
Well she hates him but it's not for the reasons you think.
My money's on concubine Loulan. The maid whispering into her ear is way to sus.
