  • Hello my friends. Today I will take you to a magical place. This place is Located on the Sithonia peninsula in Greece. This peninsula is part of another bigger one called Halkidiki. On the map the Halkidiki resembles a trident. The same weapon that is the symbol of the greek god Poseidon. Sithonia is the middle prong of this peninsula. And the place that I’m taking you is near the top of that prong. It is called Thalata camping and there we spend our summer vacation.
Actually Thalata is a very popular tourist destination not only for locals but also Bulgarian, Serbian and tourists from all over Europe. And there is a reason for that. The waters of the Aegean Sea are clean and the beaches have nice pure sand. The water is a bit salty for my taste but I’m used to the one from Black Sea.
But let’s talk about the camping. First it is a big camping. I didn’t count the places for caravans and tents but they were a lot. They are grouped in several sections and each section has a specific name and colour on the map. There are a lot of bathrooms, restrooms, washing and kitchen places which are dispersed evenly around the camping and are in close proximity. There is electricity and water posts shared between 4-5 spots. Around each spot there are trees providing shade. The only exception are the glamping tents and the stationary caravans that are close to the beach. They don’t have shade but I think some of them have Air Conditioning if not all. Even if you don’t own a caravan, motorhome or a tent you can rent one of these or a mobile home. Mobile homes were located on the far side of the camping but even there everything is very close to the beach. Our spot was some 50 meters from the sea and was also very close to the bathrooms and kitchen facilities.
Along the beach there is an alley that can be used for walks and running. The beach is around 400 meters long. Which makes a very good length for swimming. As I said the water is very clean and it was very calm early in the morning. There were small fish but no seaweed or clams. I was told that in late August and September the waves become bigger.
In the beginning of the camping there is the reception and after that there are several facilities. First there is a gelaterie and bakery that you can buy coffee, ice cream and breakfast. Next to it is a clothes shop and after that comes the restaurant. We ate only once in the restaurant because it was quite busy in the evenings and the prices were a bit high. Close to the restaurant is the swimming pool. I don’t know why they put a swimming pool next to the sea but if you don’t like the sea you can bathe here. Just bear in mind that the water in the swimming pool was way dirtier than the water in the sea.
Close to the swimming pool is the tennis court and behind the tennis court is the bar. We didn’t try the bar but in front of it there were some beach beds with umbrellas that can be rented for 2 euro per person a day. On both left and right of the beach are rising some very pretty rocks. It looks like they were carved from the sea in different shapes.
Also on the beach there are two volley ball fields that are free to use. But let’s continue with the facilities. The restaurant is not the only option for food. On the back of it there is a dining area which is self service. However each time we tried to get some food there were not much left. Maybe it was pre season or we did’t get in the right time.
Close to the restaurant there is a pizza and Gyros place. It is only open on the evenings but the pizzas were pretty nice. My favourite was the 5 cheese pizza. The drawback is that only two people were working there and it takes more than 30 minutes to prepare your order so plan accordingly.
All facilities accept debit cards and Apple Pay so even if you don’t have any euro you will be fine.
Overall we didn’t miss anything in the camping. There is even a children’s playground, two soccer fields and one basketball field and they are free to use. Maybe one thing that could be better is the Wi-fi reception. Wi-fi was only available around the restaurant and supermarket. If you are far from them there is no signal and you have to rely on your cell phone’s connection.
If you want to become adventurous there are a lot of beaches and nice places around Sithonia. I brought my road bike with me and I rode to the nearby towns and beaches early in the morning. It was pretty nice and calm on the roads but be prepared for a lot of climbing. In close proximity of the camping is the Kalamitsi village that has its own beach with some nice places to eat and drink coffee. We were told that Zorba’s tavern is really good with some affordable prices. We also visited the town of Nea Marmaras that was around 35 km on the other side of the peninsula. It was a pretty nice resort with very clean and long beaches, a lot of restaurants, bars and some supermarkets.

Been there some years ago, rented a mobile home (stationary caravan). A bit cramped, but had a tiny bathroom and a kitchen sink. Was a nice experience.

It depends if it is on season or off. The season starts at first of July and you can calculate the price on their site. This year we are going for 10 nights and we will pay 470 euro for 1 caravan, 1 car, 2 adults and 2 children. The price also varies if you use tent or their caravan, bungalow etc.

One bottle 1.5 liters was 90 eurocents. One of the days we went to the nearby town of Nea Marmaras and there was a Spark supermarket that sold it for 35 if you get a pack of 6. Also we didn’t find larger bottles. Here in Bulgaria 🇧🇬 we can get up 11 liter bottles/tanks in every convenience store.
