Poor Dido 😢. Also based on this story alone, I cannot imagine why the Romans viewed Aeneas as a hero. (Also kinda ties into your Divine Comedy series since Dido was in the circle of Lust in Dante’s Inferno)
Lets face it the type of men that men see as heroes are typically horrible to women because to both Greek and Roman men the job of the wife was to add to their power and give them sons.
Fantastic, as usual. Although Ms. Armstrong is in fact one of those singer/songwriters that I turn to on many a rainy day, it didn't even cross my mind to assume this was about her until you referenced her, so now I'm going to have to hope for some (unseasonal) rain so I can put on one of her albums and have a good sob somewhere. I always though Aeneas' character could be pretty solidly be summed up by a slight mispronunciation of his name. And between Dido's bullhide takeover of Carthage and her decision to absolutely scar her spurning lover for life with her response to his betrayal, I am fully shocked that she isn't better known.
The depth of your knowledge never fails to astound me. Your analysis is always thoughtful and fresh. You're awesome! ❤❤. I also adore how you relate ancient tales to our times.
One of my favourite Operas is Dido and Aeneas by Henry Purcell, I plan to add the Aeneid to my collection of books. I'm also a huge fan of classical mythology and I wish to delve more into Ancient Greek and Roman history and philosophy.
Great video! Wow, Dido was definitely done dirty. 😠 (Also, thanks for showing those RSC pics from the Dido play. I love the actress Chipo Chung, so it's neat to see that she played Dido in a production!) ❤
i cackled at the comment about retellings. i love a few but theres so damn many. its bizarre that its become the lastest publishing "trend". its also weird to me how much publishing topics/genres follow trends now.
I could listen to you talk for days. I had just listened to Didos Lament by my fave composer Henry Purcell. Listening to your detailed explanation of her story.
Time-frame over which Jupiter was worshipped × population density × spawn rate of ambitious dudes who needed a touch of godhead to lend them legitimacy = ??? probably at least one battalion.
Just bear in mind that all of this is based on Greek and Roman (rivals and enemies of Carthage) propaganda with almost no actual direct "primary" sources.
The problem with Dido is that there is an obscene amount of the legendary and the mythological mixed in with what very little historical there is. I would rather find the historical root of the stories, honestly.
2:52 it’s seriously getting kinda silly at this point 💀 i wanted to do some actual reading on mythology so I was on Libby trying to find some books about mythology that weren’t novels and the amount of “feminist retellings” of Greek myths I saw was a bit annoying ngl. And im a feminist who loves Madeline miller. Of course there’s nothing wrong with retellings of myths it’s just a bit annoying to me to see it done over and over.
It would be best if you wrote those books. I agree that they are missing in the grand scheme of books. You can make them mostly historical or entirely fictional. Either way, that sounds like some great drama. Also, this was from a month ago, but you could still edit those little moments when you need to restart your script. It's easy with Adobe software. I was able to teach myself very quickly how to edit videos. I would be willing to help you if you don't mind making friends with a stranger in California.
North Africans and people of the Levant weren't black why they haired Black people to play these characters for the theater play? this woke and African centrism stuff went too far
@@Naebody99 Nope! these aren't sub Saharan stories, history or mythology. those belong to people of the levant. cradle of humanity is not Africa this is debated. but certainly cradle of the civilisation is in the fertile crescent, these stories were written with Phoenician alphabets not sub-Saharan alphabets. stealing other people history and inspired myths is not good thing. so are you saying that the people of north Africa and the levant are not native to their lands and they are imposters and the real population were black? and those stories do not belong to them? why the roman characters weren't depicted as black? the people of North Africa and the levant are the ones targeted here.
I see Cinzia, I click the video. Simple as
Same 💚 I could listen to Cinzia read the _DICTIONARY_ 🥰
Dido! Er, I meant “Ditto!” Haha

I did not know Dido had a second name. Obviously a lot of her life was mythical but it's very interesting.
Another wonderful story! I laughed out loud at the way you said "we're a thing now,, right?" Love your humor! Thanks-
Lets face it the type of men that men see as heroes are typically horrible to women because to both Greek and Roman men the job of the wife was to add to their power and give them sons.
I love this story, I sang Dido’s Lament for an honors choir exhibition. So beautiful 🙂↕️🥹

As opposed to the tragic fate of Dido, the queen of Indie-pop...
No, don't get up...I'll show myself out.
I mean, the industry let Safe Trip Home down about as hard as Aeneas dropped the relationship, so there's definitely some parallels...
Many such cases @@Soilfood365
This is an incredible read. Things really have not changed. 😅
I always thought that Dido was from Carthage... Another very interesting video, thank you! 🙂
I will go down with this ship...thank you for these rabbit holes
What a total jerk!!! 😢 He doesn't even care...he just wanted some 🐈...

Beautiful story
I'm not sure if you know this, but according to Wikipedia, Jezebel from the Bible is the great aunt of Dido
New episode!
Thanks for this fascinating video Cinzia!

Love these videos from you!!
Love how you pronounce Carthage.
Love the video Cinzia. It's a great companion to my morning train trip.
Would've been tragic if she wasn't Carthaginian

Love your vids
That was brilliant...
Great stuff
This is the channel to watch while studying Ancient Greek philosophy.
Thank you for continuing to post. Love the stories and the tellings.
Good stuff.
Back in high school, we translated and studied the Aeneid, and my romantic teenage heart was broken. Thank you for making this video! 💔💜
I could listen to you talk for days. I had just listened to Didos Lament by my fave composer Henry Purcell. Listening to your detailed explanation of her story.
Fascinating video. I always enjoy your stuff because you're such a history buff
very sad but beautiful telling of the story (stories). thank you
I’m glad to contribute to the best day of your life 🙂
She was a true Queen 👑
"...the son of Jupiter." Sorry for the questions but, officially, how many children did Jupiter have? Like three full battalions?
Time-frame over which Jupiter was worshipped × population density × spawn rate of ambitious dudes who needed a touch of godhead to lend them legitimacy = ??? probably at least one battalion.
Thank you so much for this video
Loved the video
Thank you.
Overlapping audio at the start is sensory overload
I have been waiting for you to do this video 😊
Excellent 😊
Well done.
Yay! a new video. Thank you!

Half correct on the opening assumption, I went for Henry Purcell. Yes, I do feel superior, like a hipster with the appearance of a lumberjack punk.

Your videos never come up anymore:( I have to remember and look for you!
Aren't you subscribed? It should all be on your subscriptions page.
Thanks for another great video. (I have just got round to watching it). So the moral of the story is never trust men. Who knew?
Yeah, more humour in her narratives. Like.
This story reminds me of the movie Ghost and a female forward Iliad. 🤨🤔
And then she started a career as a musician...
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Fuck yea!
Comment for the algorithm
I‘m named after her^^ so proud
And it’s my 42nd bday today 🎉
It seems even ancient stories warn women about the exploitative nature of hobosexuals 😅
It's *always* the gods' fault. :-/
But does Dido sing? :)
Too bad the storytelling is so messy. Great story. Did not finish this video.

If you want to mark the center of the surface of a sphere, then the cradle of humanity seems as good a place as any.
