I was there racing my '31 Ford Coupe with the Mid- West Gassers... I was with my friend Doug at the big end waiting for the final Jet race after running match races all day, when out of the dark corn field came "Broadway Bob" with a six pack, tie dye shirt, and star burst sun glasses... Huge surprise! we sat and had a few beers and talked about the incredible week end. it was just the three of us sitting in a gulf car.t in the dark, watching the jets... One of my fondest memories. I took a photo at the time and posted on his fb tribute page a while back. I also was able to spend time hanging out with Don Garlits... a true icon and hero of Drag racing that could not be more gracious and caring to all of us racing that day... he took Swamp Rat 4 down the track with a full track burn!
I grew up on this track! Broadway Bob. My childhood. John Force came in to town and had a beer with my father in our motorhome. Want to say Cruz Pedregon was the opposition. Could be off. Been a lot of years.. I won't ever forget the Force though
Several years ago I ran into Broadway at Universal Studios In Orlando. He was standing in front of Mel's Diner (where else?) The flame pants and the white hair was unmistakable. I spent 2/3 of my life at the grove. If I didn't come home smelling like burnt rubber and nitro I'd stay until I did. Does any one know just how many times the jets set the tower on fire?
Nothing like being there when Bob was riding "The Green Mamba" with a cold one in hand..
