    This is absolutely the best river report for my son and me who will be heading to Pulaski one week from now. The only thing I'd like to see is the actual date when the video was filmed. It's a fantastic help for our planning.

    For the life of me white dog , can’t understand the satisfaction of hooking into fish flossing! It’s really not fishing , but for guys like you , who bust their ass and do it the right way , the end reward is truly well earned and legit! Congrats on a awesome trip , you put the work in and deserve it !! Some of those battles were awesome to watch !! It’s amazing how some tweaking with lighter line makes the difference! Tight lines !

    • @WhiteDogTrailCompany
      @WhiteDogTrailCompany  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you!!! And I completely agree with you. What is the satisfaction of hooking a fish that didn't intend to bite? It is just snagging. I would rather fish way harder and get those few bites! Thanks again!

First fish of the day was a 15-16" brown and found a bow about the same size. Rest were more like 12-14". Definitely happy to see holdovers after the summer we had!

      @WhiteDogTrailCompany  2 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      Thanks for the recent comments. I tie my own flies and don't buy them anywhere... but the local fly shops like Whitakers up in Pulaski will have any flies you need and can give you advice. I would highly recommend getting a pass at the DSR and starting to learn the water there. There is a TON of good water in that whole stretch. It is all about timing and having fresh fish come through. Good luck!

    figured id comment here since this is a salmon related question. Where do you attach your split shots for salmon if/when using them? I have always attached them to the tail of my leader at my swivel which is good if they get snagged in a rock they tend to pull off the tag however I find that casting is effected some by the tag being weighted and seen in videos some attach them directly to the leader. When trout or bass fishing im not too worried about it but if Im landing a 20+ pound king I worry that crimping the splitshot to the leader would damage the lines strength.

    • @WhiteDogTrailCompany
      @WhiteDogTrailCompany  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I do the same thing you do. I put any split shot on the leader tag at the swivel (although I use a tippet ring now just so fish won't see anything). I'm less concerned about the shot harming the line as I am with the shot dragging the line into rocks and other bottom debris. You're more like to break off your leader or harm you leader that way. With the shot on the tag of the leader, you can sometimes avoid harming your leader.

    Another great video Bryan. Have you ever hit the river for winter steelies?

    • @WhiteDogTrailCompany
      @WhiteDogTrailCompany  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes I have. Tough fishing... brutally cold. I've really only caught one "winter" steelhead. My other trips are usually November or Late March\Early April.

    Great video as expected!!!! I was just watching your fly tying video for the sexi stonefly and was wondering if you ever tie those on a jig hook with a slotted tungsten bead and if so how well that works?

    • @WhiteDogTrailCompany
      @WhiteDogTrailCompany  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I have not tied it on a jig hook just because I'm usually looking for a little more length but I'm sure it can be easily done. I love barbless jig hooks for most of my nymphs. One thing I have not gotten into are slotted beads. I bought some but never really liked them. I use normal tungsten beads for my nymphs.

  • @berks8260
    @berks8260 ปีที่แล้ว

    Brian, what weight bead did you use on the Wooley buggers and what weight cone? Also believe you used size 6 long hook? Getting ready to head up mid September DSR. Thx Phil

      @WhiteDogTrailCompany  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If you have seen my "Salmon River Setup" video (th-cam.com/video/UHTWkr0L1Nw/w-d-xo.html) you know I use as little split shot as possible to avoid flossing salmon. So I try to put the weight in the fly itself. At the time of this video and the fly tying video where I ties these (th-cam.com/video/vzQu_z44mIA/w-d-xo.html) I was only using brass cones and lots of lead. I've switch to using tungsten and less lead. I tie these in various sizes. Sometime I want something big on and sometimes I want smaller if the fish are pressured. On the bigger size the overall fly weight is 1.5 grams. On the smaller size they are about 1 gram. I use a scale to weigh my flies and organize them by weight. I've struggled in terms of hooks. Finding good, strong hooks that won't bend out can be a challenge. I like the small flies as they don't bend out as easily as the bigger hooks.

    • @WhiteDogTrailCompany
      @WhiteDogTrailCompany  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Believe me man... I've been thinking about that kind of shot for years!!! The clarity of the water is ok but not good enough to see very far with a camera underwater. I would need them to be pretty close. But I would LOVE that footage!!! I have also though about flying the drone above the fish while someone swings a bright fly through them to see if we could capture a strike! Maybe one day... we'll see!

    • @WhiteDogTrailCompany

      Most of the salmon in this video are Chinook Salmon ((King Salmon). The really silvery one is a Coho Salmon. They are both in the Pacific Salmon family. Pacific Salmon are not native here... they are stocked and produce naturally now. We do get some Atlantic Salmon as well. In fact, the Salmon River was actually named after the Atlantic Salmon because there used to be so many of them. Now they are rare to find...

    • @WhiteDogTrailCompany
      @WhiteDogTrailCompany  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      A 7wt is a little light for a fresh salmon.. especially if it is a shorter rod. It is perfect for steelhead and even the cohos... but a big fresh king might be a little much for the 7wt. It can be done... just be careful! i have landed Kings on a 7wt Switch Rod while steelhead fishing but I did not feel like I had the power I needed...

    I watched all your Salmon videos. How often do the fish die when caught? Im ignorant when it comes to Salmon fishing. In almost every video I see a dead fish. On the side of the stream. I’m not saying you’ve killed them. But what’s their survival rate after getting caught? I realize they will dead anyway soon after spawn.

    • @WhiteDogTrailCompany
      @WhiteDogTrailCompany  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The fight is not what is typically killing them. They come from the lake (or ocean) and run miles and miles up river to spawn. The ones you see dead either did not survive the run or have spawned and died. They come into the rivers anytime from late August to late October... so many have already run their course by the time I am there to do my videos. Any salmon river will have a bunch of dead salmon during the season.

    • @WhiteDogTrailCompany
