    I’m Samoan. I was in foster care when I was younger. Stayed with a black family and a Mexican family. Learned a lot from both and it was an awesome experience because I felt like I got the best of both worlds especially cuz I learned spanish from my Mexican foster parents. Went back to LA and Long Beach I’ve always seen eye to eye with all of them since then. Nothing but love

      Well said Galatron and Athum. That experience he had - the description - is a moment of clarity we all go through in life - at least those that made it out. The astonishing thing? It is like turning on a light bulb - it is instant. Just that one second - and there it is - that one moment of clarity that changes your life. Mine was a stop sign. Ridding on a bike at 17 - looked up at a stop sign - and it all sank in - i remember it so vividly. I just had that moment of clarity - all the young friends who died at such a young age, all the incarcerations, all friends with kids on the way or newborns - and there it was - my moment of clarity. Just like that. Almost inexplicable.

I thought that shit was backwards as hell. They would portray the popular guy like some real street general yet loving angel at the same time. All the shirts, love, murals, & flowers. Meanwhile it was a ghost town for the ones who lived that wicked lifestyle to the fullest. Crazy!

    Inspirational story! Thank you for creating a series that tells the untold stories from our communities like this. Even in places like small town Nampa Idaho we have similar stories so it’s good to see people overcome so much adversity and turn negatives in to positives and defy the odds. Looking forward to that podcast homie! Cheers!

    I can't speak for everyone else, but for LA or me being in general, me being Asian, it doesn't matter about race with me. If he's your homeboy, then he's your homeboy. It's not about race at that point. Don't get me wrong, back in high school, we beef it with Mexicans hard. I use to hate them but as I grew up, I learned. Now I got a bunch of Mexican homies that are down to ride, and I would do the same

      I'm white and I've walked some of the hardest streets in some of the hardest neighborhoods and cities that I could find and I can agree...most of the hospitality I've received in my travels were from black people...some of the kindest hearts...even in the hardest situations and I venture to say BECAUSE of the hardest situations...folks who are pampered in comfort who ignore the struggle are the quickest to turn a blind eye to a person in the struggle, dealing with hardship, while those engaged in said struggle will give their last 2 dollars to someone else in the struggle...real recognize real as it were, I suppose...

    • @HouseofDavidonscene

      More than anything I think it's those in the struggle that recognize the struggle in others and are quick to give a leg up and as is the status quo most often than not it seems the struggle is confined to those in the lower echelons of society, and those who dont fit in and it is hard to fit in when society is geared against certain stereotypes...like me...I'm dirty south trailer park royalty tatted from my forehead to my shins and as much is the case with many of ethnic background, I am judged based on the color of my skin rather than the content of my character...oh well, their loss..

    Dude broke the harbor area card, the east los card, the west los card perfectly. That's why when you hear of Mexican hoods from west LA they say "WEST LOS" or some shit like that and vice versa for the east los ones. The most accurate shit he got right was the racial shit. The ones who are pushing "NK" the most are southsiders that don't live near blacc people at all and never have so they don't know how to share the culture with them. The southsiders who live in places like compton, south central, watts usually aren't racist. Its usually the ones who are from places where there's hardly any blacc people like east la.

    That was real talk @ the end. I've witnessed it first hand. There's no real honor amongst thieves. Whole "system" makes no sense. The young popular/loveable new comer in the hood got the huge funeral with all the donations & flowers his family could handle. While his "reputable" homie was forgotten as soon as he took his last breath. Funeral was a ghost town. He was lucky his own mom showed up. I've seen it. All those "stats" meant nothing in the real world. They obviously meant nothing to his own homies. Troy Ave said something similar in his recent Breakfast Club interview. He mentioned "Street Cred" & "Street life" being a myth, & how they hold no real weight in the real world. He said something like, "Street cred on a million while your credit score is 400". Can't even get an apartment lol. It can't feed your kids or family. It only matters in the minds of broken people in that same "limited reality". PLEASE WAKE UP!

How we gonna get along with each other when we cant even see the real box and the reasons we go at it? There is no reason. If its persy its persy, but we need to stop being stupid ass puppets. Great Interview Alonzo He explained that this Sur VS Blacc conflict in La county is real exactly what i said on my interview #100

    • @alexunlv
      @alexunlv 6 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      It isn't Sur vs Blacc in the sense of purely racial. That is a mere simplistic view. Yes, there is a divide that happens to be on the basis of race....but race is NOT the root cause of this disintegration. When you collaborate with each other for protection - you collaborate with those people you are more prone to trust. You are more prone to trust those who you have dealt with in the past - whether friends or rivals. The next natural step - link up with those you can relate to and validate. The result? Latinos who were active gang members clicked up together with other active Latino gang members. Same with Whites same with Blacks.
      The reason people click up together while incarcerated isn't b/c of any racial divide - it is for protection against predators. When you are in a County Jail or Youth Authority - and you have a group of one particular group of people who have more in numbers - they become predators. To protect against this predator behavior - you do what you have to do to neutralize that threat. In jails, you give up the street gang shit and link up on the premise of being the same - gang members with a similar life style - specifically those in your group that you can more easily validate - so the natural step was to link up with that group - which happened to be, unintentionally, a racial divide.
      Compare an East Coast prison to a West Coast prison. You'll see the big difference. East Coast Prisons are more prone to have filthy, dirty, loud, obnoxious, predatory type inmates. West Coast prisons - you have structure, you have rules. You're required to maintain a clean environment - clean cells - minimize obnoxious noise levels, NO STEALING, no fighting with other racial groups, etc. The best way to implement these rules? You maintain that separation on the basis of gang links - which just happen to be racial.
      All this creates a more tolerable prison experience - than one with pure chaos and no rules.

We always coexisted, even when the race wars started, a lot of them were stand up dudes and I always respected that. This is a standup dude and I respect and appreciate his story

    It is so true about being Latino growing up in Inglewood/Lennox area and using the "N" word cause I grew up saying that to all my friends (both black or hispanic) and it was normal back in the day. Now that I have grown up and am more mature I have pretty much chosen to eliminate the "N" word from my vocabulary but whenever I see my cousins or friends that I grew up with it is close to impossible for the word not to come out a few times.

    I'm from NJ and moved to LA for a year 2017.. he's actually right on the Hispanics in Inglewood//Lennox they are culturally a little more integrated then in like north east LA. I stayed in Highland park then South Central, Inglewood then Watts. I am Latino myself and never really got problems in South LA I actually had Mexicans try bang on me in north east LA .. I'm like wtf? I'm hispanic bro too what is this. They were more ignant in the sense of race. Maybe it was the fact I had braids? i dishwashed in Culver City and the Mexicans use to tell me if I went to the county Id have the option to choose if I'm a black gang or a homie as they call it. Lived in Lynwood and Compton and went to school in East LA and I noticed that those of us who lived in Lynwood and Compton are a newer generation and those from places like HP and East LA tend to come from families already established for a long time. East LA people tend to be more of those zoot suit/ ""Chicano power", "Ese" kind of people. East LA people tend to be racist and not really know what its like to hang or play with black folks. Mind you this was over a decade ago and things change. HP and South Gate has a lot more black folks and thats a good thing because being only Latin or Hispanic neighborhoods also need to integrate. I remember one classmate in Highschool gave me a ride to my i apartment in Lynwood near the old Lynwood Knights Highschool (Near the now closed Compton Swapmeet) and mind you he lived in a pretty unsafe neighborhood in East LA and he told me "Hey man, what kind of neighborhood you live in? I feel like I wanna lock my car doors here" lol. I felt less safe in Lynwood and Compton than in East LA. East LA folk tend to be knee deep in that Chicano culture stuff and those of us in the other areas are a bit more open minded and actually speak English and not that "Califas" talk. In the end you can be friends with anyone eventually I've learned but yeah when you're a young kid you notice and are noticed in regards to how you act and speak. I think South LA is probably the roughest neighborhood to grow up in no matter your race. I hope anyone with a chance to leave and go beyond the hood can and should or can improve their neighborhood as well.
