  • A little bit of phrasing for jazz here singers. Phrasing can make or break your sound. Just look at Frank Sinatra and Dinah Washington and their distinctive sounds for a good example of how phrasing can change your feel completely.
But its not that easy.... so I'll break it down for you in this phrasing mini series.

It really put things into perspective when you said to sing it like a story. Thank you, that was very helpful!

Extremely helpful; thank you, Nicola. It's so refreshing to find a vid by a real jazz singer on TH-cam, and one with a great sense of humor. I'm a trumpet player, now putting myself out there as a singer. Now I actually have to start paying attention to the lyrics and telling a story, "selling the song" you might say. My phrasing needs work, and this vid is a big help. Most appreciated.

thanks for another great video, its not easy to make a mistake phrasing when you have perfect phrasing like yourself, so well done for acting that out i so wished i stuck to piano lessons i know enough to write a song but it is a beautiful instrument , i picked up the drums when i was 3 guitar age 11, and i would sit in my room bouncing my voice from one cassette to the other cassette i can remember doing that when i was 8 then at 30 , i had piano lessons , i would try to sing to anything , sinatra presley , i would even try taking of female singers or trying to sing at there pitch freda payne band of gold ella fitzgerald stretching the vocal cords all the time , i think the piano sitting in a room on your own and getting lost in jazz chords and voicing s., what can be better ,any way i wish you well in your musical career, its sad that artists now loose so much money on social media if that s the right word to use , ripped off , years ago you would write an album and buy a house with the proceeds , now all you can buy is a pair of shoes, so sad ,all you can do is Gig thats what you have to do, The world has changed not for the better and without sounding too miserable the planet is going to get worse before it gets better spiritually speaking , but all credit to you your having a great time musically , and your timing as a comedian you could make a career out of that ,alone ,which is so needed on stage someone with a great sense of humour , the way you mimic or imitate people and there characteristics is hilarious , I.E ( please please buy my cd) as you fall to your knees had me in stitches , anyway thanks again all the best .........

Thanks for that lesson!!! I wonder though in your "singing through" as you said, would that be an example of the best use of your diaphragm and those who breath more often are simply not trained in the use of the diaphragm?¹
I also wonder if someone who is singing the song and on the spot decide to lengthen a note, but of course stay within the appointed measures, don't you think that could change how the breathing happens?
    THANKS ABGIN 🤗🤗🙏😀😀
PS: You have a lovely voice! 🎶🎶🎶

I’ve told a few singers, improper breath almost sounds like a hiccup in a song. Lol Very noticeable. That’s where a good warm-up comes in to play.

Thank you, so helpful. A beginning DIY singer, never noticed trouble breathing when beginning and now I seem to always be running out of breath, even now using breathing exercises intermittently, and singing exercises ~ out of the blue, breath all gone!!! What to do. I will try using your suggestion and see if I can't find the way through!! Thank you ~ gives hope!
