I'm pretty shy. And I'm not part of a choir. I sing just for fun. I usually want to sing quietly because I don't want my family hearing because I'm afraid they'll judge my singing (my sister does). It's probably the main reason. I don't have a very good airflow.

Thanks for the tips! The strategies you mentioned - (a) making lots of space in the mouth and (b) lifting the soft palette as high as it will go.. These work when you want dark vowels and a classical sound. They don't work for many contemporary styles, such as blues, gospel, soul, RnB, jazz, and musical theatre. Singing in tune is such an important topic. Your background in music is very important. Singers who were exposed to singing from a young age and had lots of role models, generally have fewer struggles with pitch. Also unwanted muscle tension, in the jaw, tongue and neck is a big contributor to flat singing.

I am 46 years-old and decided to start pursuing singing last year! I am very grateful for all of the great vocal lessons-especially on TH-cam!
I discovered this video last night and it had changed my outlook! I sound much better and now, I finally feel confidence when singing.
I plan to take what you taught me and start using ASAP! I’m excited to meet with my singing class later today and show them this awesome vocal performer...MOI!😃😉
I always wanted to sing and I knew, I was overthinking the process. Now, after watching this concise video, I finally get IT! I need to sigh ofter and speak & sing with a “POSH” tone to keep my soft pallet raised. I will start today and never go back to speaking from my throat (that was brought to my attention during my first lesson).
I’m excited to watch more of your videos because I think you are awesome and like your style of expressing your thoughts!👌

I've been trying to fix my flat singing for about a year now, although I've been singing in the eighth grade. I'm in the 11th grade now and play tuba, so I knew it couldn't be breath support, and the musical ear was improbable. I listened to this video once and used the posh "cow Brow" exercise and I sang middle c pretty much center on its pitch. I did the same with a few different pitches. Thank you so much. I can start to fix this and be on my way to new techniques.

I am new to singing at 60 and joined a accapella choir which as you can imagine was pretty difficult.
I used to sing to myself a lot and my husband always said I was singing out of tune, so I stopped singing and now
I’m finding my voice and this video has really explained to me at last how it is that one ends up singing out of tune.
Ear training is what I need to focus on as Nicola said the the breathing advice is great. Thank you so much

In every stage situation you have to forget all the risks and be committed to your song, your singing technique and the emotions/ the story you're telling. You don't have time to get distracted by disturbing thoughts about the audience and their judgements about you ... It's all about concentration - or say "focus" ;)
Forget about the world and "be" your song.
As every note evolves from your breath, you need to avoid everything that may disturb your breathing! But: Thoughts evoke emotions and emotions control your breath. Hence "wrong" thoughts disturb your singing! So start training your brain ;)
I do not know how to explain better (sry, english is not my first language). But I hope it helps nevertheless.

I always remember other people are to Busy worrying about themselves and what others think about them.
A great saying that guides me is : “ a life lived in fear, is a life half lived”
It was at a smallish concert 60-80 people. The guitar player invited people to play and sing. I had a harmonica in my pocket. So I asked him if he knew “boys light up” by Australia crawl. He did. Without him knowing I busted out the harmonica beginning. He thought I was doing this with my mouth 😃. With playing the harmonica, everyone assumes I was a musician, and I bluffed it. The next day a lady that I didn’t know. That was within hearing distance but couldn’t see the stage. Said to me did you hear the guy singing “boys light up” wasn’t he good. I laughed. And said to her that was me. No fear.

Using a consonant such as a K or P or t for forward placement of a tone before singing is a better example. Place a vowel in front of the k ex. ka or Pa or T for Ta before the folds begin to vibrate producing vocal sound. Here is the procedure: Apply the Ka, Pa, or Ta to expel the air inside the mouth. As the air is expelled, the folds form their position and begin vibrating and produce the desired pitch already realized in memory.

Gayathri K Before I started singing, i was a guitarist so that helped a lot.The first thing you need to learn is to sing in the Key and to stay on the key! So you need to practice to hold a key for as long as possible. (Practice Sa Re Ga Ma, it really helps). When you've mastered the key! It's time to look upon the variations. Pick up your favorite song and try to sing exactly like the original. For example i used "When I Was Your Man by Bruno Mars". This will help you pick up the little details such as vibrato's and falsetto's. And then as you realize the parts you lack, try to improve them. And that can just be done by regular practice. The key is just don't give up and keep practicing. Believe in Yourself and you'll do wonders :)

    Not bad. I would say:
    1. Be aware of downward going parts of a melody: To slide down is a common fault, mainly on the last note.
    2. Be aware of piano sections and slow sections: Many singers loose pitch control when singing piano or slow.
    3. "Reach" the note from above it. It may help to imagine the notes hanging down from a kind of "clothesline" representing C major.

You ever hear her sing? I didn't think so. So how do you know he's even telling the truth?
More importantly, if that's something she enjoys and wants to do, wouldn't it be better for her most intimate friend to in some way help her learn how to sing, or at least encourage her somehow so as to improve, rather than to dismiss and discourage her so bluntly? Is that indicative of his nature, to put down rather than to build up and thereby maximize whatever potential she may have? Not everyone is a gifted soloist capable of executing a complicated aria from one of Handel's compositions. However, with instruction, assistance, and practice, most people can offer an harmonic voice range that fits pleasingly within the chordal mode of the other voices in an ensemble, choir, etc. I have seen and heard a lot of professional singers who were mediocre at best. But they were doing what they loved doing because somewhere along the line they were encouraged and helped to develop whatever talent they did have!
It's not so much about feelings as it is about human nature and nourishing relationships. As a society, we've found it more the acceptable norm to tear-down, rather than to build-up and support one another. Today it's about her singing. Tomorrow it may be about his obvious insensitivity towards her, rather than offering encouragement on an issue potentially important to their relationship and her well-being. You can usually predict an oncoming storm by the kind of clouds in the sky!

Thanks for this. Great tips on soft palate and tongue placement. I just purchased the Korg VPT to help my musical hearing. I am sure it will help. I have used Bruce Arnold’s ear training which has helped me identify my trouble spots. Oddly enough, I had real trouble hearing thirds. Glad I learned that. Also flat sixth. I have heard of people using the Korg while recording to help keep on track.

Is the problem hearing when you are out of tune, or making your voice do what you hear in your ear?

    • @allengoyne
      @allengoyne 3 ปีที่แล้ว

@@SingBetterIn3Days Since this comment I started working with a vocal coach in-person. I had trouble on exercises just identifying thirds. She has had me work on palate, voicing consonants forward and material where I have to sing harmony while playing. I think that I’ve made some progress.

Vocal strength is also very important, as well as using your diaphragm to sing- not through your throat or nose. Improper singing can harm vocal chords.

Do I need to know by ear the sound of notes of the full scale? Because I remember our music teacher telling us the starting first note of a song, and she would tell if we missed it and would immediately stop us or nod if we hit the note.

My ears are so well conditioned to a perfect note from playing piano, viola, harmonica, and many others that I can't hear if I'm singing in tune until I hear the recording. I just hear a perfect note being sung, instead of what I'm ACTUALLY doing. Of course as soon as I listen to a recording of me... DAMN. That's my darn problem. Also I'm 13 so my range is pretty low but I just can't get the volume out of the range I do have. I might just have to wait until I get all through puberty cuz my voice isn't really cooperating rn

I now understand about singing to chord progressions. But what about when U sing a note that's part of a chord like C7 Major. There's a song on a piano tutorial on youtube and the C Major chord is played and the melody note is B FLAT along with that chord to become C7 major. I'd like more information on this please :) Also, can U gimme tips on singing to arpeggio chords.
