    The final episode of "Lost" wasn't a cliffhanger. And the former passengers of Oceanic Flight 815 were not in any kind of purgatory. Everything that happened on the island happened in real life -- some of them escaped, some were killed, Jack sacrificed himself, Hugo and Ben stayed behind to protect The Island -- and all of them were reunited in an afterlife. It might have been an unsatisfying ending to the series, but it was not a cliffhanger by any stretch.

    actually in the avatar books it explains what happened to prince zuko's mom... she was sent away and brain washed to have her memory wiped... aang, katara, zuko went in search of her after aang defeated the phenix king and zuko became the new fire lord , zukos sister azula knew where she was and they made azalea take them to her and then once she seen zuko she got her memory back

      +Jason Zink Actually it was more like she was exiled and returned to her home village, and voluntarily had her face changed and her memories erased by a spirit so that she could start over. She asked the same spirit to return her face and memories after Zuko and the Gaang tracked her down.

    It wasn't purgatory!!!! Damon Lindelof has made this abundantly clear in multiple interviews. They all lived out their lives, died whenever their time came, and then met in the church after passing. It was a place they had made to reunite because of the bond they formed on the island. We watched Jack die. Hurley could have died hundreds of years later after taking over on the island

    • @imnodog
      @imnodog 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      the purgatory was the side side universe/reality in the last season, that's what people didn't like.

    • @imnodog
      @imnodog 8 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Darryl Ruiz
      the scene in the church, that universe they were all in, *that* was the purgatory, not their story in the island but their side story, we thought it was going to be somehow connected to their main story but it wasn't, it was just not needed as they went towards a completely different direction than the show had been doing for the previous seasons. That's why people were pissed. I myself did not find it that bad, but it certainly made a great show, one that I thought would have been an all time favorite for me, lose a lot in the end and now it's just a meh show...

    • @DDnufcGamer
      @DDnufcGamer 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      +imnodog I really liked the start and middle of the show, but after the 8 escaped they should have stopped imo, because it very quickly went down hill after that imo.
      The show was always a bit mysterious and weird, but I liked that a lot of it turned out to be humans doing it, with crazy experiments etc. Then the island started time travelling and Jack was forced to go back to the island because of fate etc, the whole show just went meh. As if they needed to keep getting crazier and they hadn't planned for it. I know everyone doesn't share that opinion, thats just mine haha.

      Then another question is unanswered, when they had blew up the swan station, there was a creation of another timeline when the island was under the water and they never were on the island, when you say it was the afterlife, then the blowing up didnt work?

    • @MT-UK
      @MT-UK 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It didn’t have a cliffhanger so much as an ending/finale with MULTIPLE secrets/plots/lore etc that were left unanswered or at the least extremely VAGUE.
      Many say lost wasn’t clear or it never answered the final plot or overall big Qn which was - What is going on are they dead or alive? Is it a dream? was it real?
      Which was answered BUT was open to interpretation, & in interviews the creators and many writers said it was created to be as detailed as possible & wanted to incorporate as many FAN THEORIES as possible within the ‘ending/explanation’ either via eater eggs, mention in convos, scaled down to actually be part of the ‘answers’ etc
      But at same time they wanted to keep it as ambiguous as possible! Like many ppl say yeah we got it & turns out they DID get what the creators etc had decided as the main/canon explanation, many say they got the jist of it but were still a bit :-/ & those who are plain confused - of course there’s the haters! But I think Lost didn’t end how I WANTED it to end, plus my interpretation may not exactly be correct but given my already big disappointment with it, it was the best I could explain to keep me satisfied...
      I mean I understood it as **Spoilers**for those rare people/weirdos (Millenials) who haven’t watched it yet!!!**Spoilers**
      I got that the island was real, they crashed, those in the group did all survive that crash, there were others on the island, as there has been over the many years, from accidents 100s of years prior, to those who seek it out & those who are based there to experiment with the unusual properties of the island - which it turns out was a sort of ‘plug’ in earth - the birthplace of Good&Evil - represented by two “entities” - Jacob and the ‘Smoke Monster’ - who fall out and Jacob must stop it escaping and upsetting the balance
      Making Jacob a ‘god’ like figure protecting the light (ironically played by the future Lucifer himself! .. knew there was something About that guy!) & the smoke monster- wel yeah the devil I guess but not just in Judaic terms - they represent the good/evil of all ages and beliefs and societies - it’s where it all comes from - that sort of interdimensional island connecting two dimensions - ours and the one where good& evil come from - making the island a sort of plug!
      Now both entities can’t kill each other, doing so unleashes the victor across the world - upsetting the balance & causing catastrophe never seen before - that counts for both good & evil as one needs the other to keep balanced!
      The Jacob who is the protector has many powers, he can keep his followers (others) alive for decades plus - he himself is ageless but has sensed the times are changing and he must find a replacement - hence the crash.. Yada yada yada - ends up with the smoke monster inhabiting Locke and Light/former Jacob taking over Jack (surprise surprise) coming toe to toe for the final showdown -
      the whole series shows you flashbacks to each characters past yet final season shows a very different flash ? Forward-back? Or even alternative dimension - each flash shows what would have happened to each character had they not got onto the plane/ each character slowly begins to remember things following a NEAR-DEATH experience in this alternate-parallel universe-flash something place & their ‘memories’ of the island comes back to them as they all gather waiting for Jack!
      Many believed the island was hell/purgatory but in every single scene on the island or flash backs or escaping home etc was in fact utterly real in every way! Wow they didn’t go to the big red button push, or the not what it sppears to be tactics - oh not to mention the old ‘dream sequence’ ending 🤢🤮
      So jack is fighting Locke - his long term opponent/rival (yes more so than sawyer as many wanted him as the opposite but to those I say u don’t have a clue regarding character growth or interpretation)
      Ultimately defeating him but costing him his life - poor guy just receives immortality to a point & god like powers to be killed within the day!
      Hurley is there with Ben ( evil genius ‘sidekick’ to the protector of the island) as jack passes and the responsibility is passed to Hurley- a kind, compassionate, loving and fair individual which is what the island needs now the danger has passed and the protectors before him - Jacob the recruiter & wise - Jack the leader & warrior, peace time requires peaceful guardian
      Anyway flash again
      Jack has ‘remembered’ his life, yes LIFE! They may all ominously be sat in a church right now but still they were alive the whole time I promise!
      Everyone greets him, Hurley too as it is explained this isn’t REAL - this IS purgatory ! Everything before was correct and real and those who died on the island, especially the good hearted ones and those who perished protecting someone or the island itself!
      Hurley mentions and hints he served as the islands protector for potentially HUNDREDS if not THOUSANDS of years ! Now it’s time to rest, the door opens with a shining light blinding them almost - beckoning them to come through it finally - then as I’m sure you can all guess right now - WHEN all of a sudden out steps John Locke screaming “SAY HELLO TO MY LITTLE FRIEND!!!!” As he unleashes the smoke monster & sends them all to hell !
      So yeah - I think it’s open to interpretation yet has enough to garner a full closure depends on the people and I think it’s a clever way of doing it

    I just want to point out something wrong with what they say about Lost's ending here. The reason many people were annoyed about the "purgatory" reveal was because they thought it implied that the entire series of events on the island never really happened. However, as mentioned here, it was only SOME of season 6 that took place in the dream dimension (Or whatever you want to call it).
    There were many unexplained mysteries throughout the series, but certain people not loving the afterlife reveal has nothing to do with the ending being unresolved. Jack and his friends in the church were able to let go of their issues and ascended to a new level of existence, the story did have a conclusion, just not the one many expected.

      What was the business with the Island?

    • @CosmicUndeadElf
      @CosmicUndeadElf 9 ปีที่แล้ว +20

      ***** The island was the force that held together the balance of Light and Dark, or Good and Evil, and needs someone to watch over it, Jacob needed to find someone else to take his place when he was gone, Jack volunteered but ended up dying after the fight with the Man In Black, so he chose Hurley to take his place, and at some point Hurley will do the same. There is a lot more to it than that, but that's the short version.

      According to...?
      As faras I see the Island had some natural energy-source what was zealously guarded by some bronze-age cult, like some radioactive valley in africa.
      It has nothing to do with good or evil, there is nothing to be guarded. It was JUST A FREAKIN' ISLAND.

      I'm just saying, I agree with you. More so, because a cliffhanger ending like that being a cop out as much as it is, would mean that any extended content toward an ending would likely use a similar tone, so YES... highly likely he's dead... but it might have pissed off fans even more to make his death uneventful.

    • @anduin1
      @anduin1 8 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Daren Aftsman
      I think there were interviews done prior to the ending with the show creator where he said he knows people expect the show to end with Tony'sdeath and he didn't want to feed in to the expectation that Tony would be brutally killed on the show like other characters were. It was his way of saying F you for whatever reason.

    • @dartvade1955
      @dartvade1955 8 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      true but they were juggling 3 timelines in essence. The real world is EVERYTHING on the island, then anything with them in LA in regular/different lives is there purgatory where everything in essence is perfect or how they wish their lives would have been or turned out in their original lives. Then the church is kind of limbo where everyone knows what has happened and they are all reuniting before they pass on into the next world or whatever you believe would happen after death.

      @AthkielKenobi 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Berhoh let's highlight that the flashes where Ben follows them around is purgatory while scenes from the island are when they are alive. I think the whole thing is about the expectations in life, no one really knows why some things happens, stuff happens whit no real reason behind them.

    • @Arshabyn7
      @Arshabyn7 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No, that is what they make believe us but there are clues that suggest that it is not a reality of what would have happened if the plane had not crashed. Jack and Juliet have a teenage son and they divorce long before the Oceanic flight, Sawyer and Miles are policemen, Daniel is named Widmore, ... Desmond is the way and Juliet is a key character to understand the end (his death and the scene of the vending machine). Christian is a resource to explain to the viewer.

    The only thing frustrating about the ending of Lost are people that didn't get the ending. They explained the big picture. There were a couple of minor threads that they never circled back to, but the main storyline was explained perfectly. We know who Jacob was, why he was there, what the smoke monster was, why the plane crashed to begin with , what the purpose of the island was, etc.

    *SPOILER ALERT FOR HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER BELOW*
    The 'How I Met Your Mother' one drove me nuts..... They spent 9 or so seasons building up to Ted meeting the Mother of his children, and come on the show is called 'How I Met Your Mother' and they spend 3 episodes building up to Robin and Barney's wedding; and Ted finally meets the Mother of his children. Whoopee, right? Everything turns out good tHEN THEY KILL THE MOM OFF IN HALF AN EPISODE AND TED ENDS UP WITH ROBIN BECAUSE ROBIN AND BARNEY GOT DIVORCED.... I apologize for the yelling. I just have a lot of feelings about this show.

    Someone reply and tell me what was so fucking confusing at the lost ending? I'm 14 and I managed to understand it? Jack died preventing the island from sinking, the flash sideways in the 6th season was just a purgatory state and the characters lived their lives until they died and went into the afterlife together... What's so confusing about that? Sure there was a couple of unanswered questions but far from confusing

      Well, that's not true. The cast has said multiple times that's not what happened while not stating what the real answer is. Is that the most common explanation? Yes, but a show that was meant to confuse you to no end wouldn't have such a simple conclusion.

      XxVash13xX They intentionally left it in answered so as to resolve it through the comics. They only intended to make three seasons of the show so it gives them a platform to leap off of. But that raises the question: if they show purposefully ended that way (unlike Twin Peaks) for a specific reason should it be in this list. For instance, Angel ends the way it does to imply that they'll keep on fighting to the end so there is no closure just another enemy and the Sopranos ends the way it does to give an artistic depiction of Tony's death (that's what's heavily implied) but leaving the door open to any possible reboot. Anyways I'm just happy that Nickelodeon signed a contract for 4 seasons is Legend of Korea other wise they probably would have cancelled it due to poor ratings last season giving an even worse set of cliff hangers than most of these shows.

      David Smith Yep. It was ridiculous. I'm not sure how the writers or anyone thought this was the best way. It was a total cop out too, all the other police and such didn't find out so there are no on screen reactions. Deb dies off screen!!!! Fail. I think the other members of their precinct should have been investigating LaGuerta's murder and led it back to Deb. Then Dexter should have turned himself over to the police and took the blame. He should have died or gone to jail saving Deb. Deb should have gotten Dexter.
      I think he should die. Dexter was the catalyst for his Dad dying when he was repulsed by Dexter killing someone. He was the reason Deb was taken by the Ice Truck killer. Dexter was the reason Rita's kids were taken by crazy hoe. Crazy hoe also killed Doakes. It was Dexter that got Rita killed by what he was doing with Trinity, but he didn't stop. He was the reason Harrison was put in in danger and taken by crazy religious man. That still didn't stop him. He put Deb in a position where she had to kill someone. Still he didn't stop. As amusing as this character is to an audience in the end... he's a serial killer. He had shown he was capable of love which means he couldn't use the I have no emotions sociopath excuse anymore. It was no longer impulse, it was a choice.The only small bit of redemption he could have gotten was if he took responsibility for his actions. Instead he runs off and becomes a lumber jack. WTF people?
      I've read several comments where people say Deb should be punished too in some way for her role. Deb has been flogging herself ever since. I don't think more is necessary.. She acted in love, not ho hum I need to kill people. Now, should she keep her job, no. Like she says, "I am the worst detective in the world"

      I think the finale was more of an end of a chapter in Dexter's life. also the time of his life the show was geared around had to do with the relationship of him and his sister, kind of a ying/yang type of situation. after she died and he left Miami it ended that chapter of his life. I always felt like he would never die because the was too much money to be made off the charater though books.

Perhaps that's a downer relative to the initial goals of the series ("Get him home!"), but - like How I Met Your Mother, Chuck, Reaper, and other great shows - the initial audience impulse elicited isn't the journey that the show wanted the audience to keep. It's at least bittersweet, not outright negative... and not a cliffhanger.

It's wasn't an automatic "tortured-to-the-end" fate but Tony thought it was quite possible so he said he wanted it to be quick which NY denied. And, this was for a failed attempt on a capo and a kill on his unmade brother. An unauthorized boss hit on the other hand would be guaranteed, especially around his civilian family. Another point to make is that it's not good usually to do the "bad guy wins" ending so leaving it at a cliffhanger is a way out. The last and most major point if it was a hit, is that it's Carmella's//AJ's Point-of-View that goes black. So if anyone was shot, it was one of them.

    Lost is a very divisive show. Everybody watched it for their own reasons and thus related to different aspects of the show. Personally, I watched for the emotional journeys each character took and I found the end to be very satisfying for me as a viewer. However, this is a very complex, layered, intricate show with so much to offer a wide range of people's various areas of interest. I enjoyed that not every question was answered because that's very true to life; just because we have questions does not mean that we will get answers and it's also true to life that sometimes when we do get answer, we might not like them. A friend of mine was really upset that the pile of notebooks that were found weren't explained and if the finale to Lost had been about answering every single question it raised over the course of six seasons then instead of the cast, Damon Lindelof and Carlton Cuse just reading off the answer to every question like they were giving the answers to some test. Also, Lost was a show that people developed a lot of theories about like that the island was purgatory and no one survived the plane crash. Another friend of mine still maintains this theory even though it has been debunked and explained that the sideways world was purgatory, a place that they created to find each other so they could let go and move on together. So some of the things that were left unexplained allow fans to maintain their theories instead of being told straight out that they're wrong. What makes Lost such a great show is that it provokes discussion. It's one of the few shows I've encountered that sparked such deep discussion and pushed people to look at things differently. Lost is a show that be viewed through so many different lens. It can provoke discussion about religion, science, good vs. evil, the different types of relationships, politics, ethics, spirituality, the list can go on and on but I think that's why I love the show and the ending did leave me hanging off a cliff.

      God I hated that. The creator said that he asked the network if a cliffhanger was safe enough and they said that it was. Then they cancelled it for reasons I personally forgot. The creator also said that the father of Earl Jr. would have been Dave Chappelle or some other black celebrity that just visited Camden County. He said that the final ending to the show would've been Earl finding a really difficult thing on his list and him not being able to solve it. He would've been all sad then find other people making Karma lists to fix all the bad they had done. The ending would've been Earl making the world a genuinely better place.

      Freaks and Geeks was a textbook example of the opposite of this: They made the finale with the full knowledge that it was the finale, and wrapped up what they felt needed to be wrapped up. The only "cliffhangers" were of the form, "Huh, I wonder what happens next in their lives," not "How will this go?" Granted, it would have been wonderful had they gotten a few seasons out of it, but definitely neither a cliffhanger nor unresolved.

What made me mad about Sliders already was, the main character got killed off and they got home one time but had to leave before they knew they were home then they never got back home again!
    I didn't watch Lost but the plot twists and storylines that never got resolved will be the same fate of Once Upon a Time, I can see it now. If I watch that show for 6+ yrs and get a BS ending I'm going to be so annoyed.

    The info about Lost is slightly incorrect. Fans didn't want the conclusion to be that the time ON THE ISLAND would turn out to be a form of purgatory, which it wasn't. Also a lot of people didn't really understand the ending or what it meant (a lot of the implications were VERY subtle) which is why people were furious.

      Rhaevyon Gray what about it? It was built as a ward by past inhabitants of the island (who were of Egyptian origins) for jacob as a shelter. You must keep in mind that Jacob never once lived in the cabin in the woods, that was old smokey the whole time. The black rock (the boat) was taken by a tidal wave and the black rock broke through the top of the statue, leaving only the foot in tact.

    I'm so fed up with "Lost" being at top of Everything bad!
    So waht if some minor issues weren't answered? Must we know everything? Do we want to be spoonfed?
    Don't people appreciate open endings anymore? What makes them great is that they make you think and use your brain and start thinking about waht really happened.
    Same goes for all the other shows on here. You have a mind, use it!

      Lost had the issue of trying to overcome its name. The writters were indeed lost in writing it.. so much pulled out if thier asses. Unanswered questions and twists are fine, so long as clues lead up to it.
      Reminds me of that new movie Maze Runner. Which clearly the writters did not know how to end, so they made it a double twist cliffhanger with no pretext.
      If you want to know how a real unended narrative is done, go watch 1990's Neon Genisis Evangelion.

      ***** The Maze Runner is completely irrelevant to lost. Use another example.

    There was a show named Vanished that was cancelled due to poor ratings. It left a huge cliffhanger though. I loved that show

    Erm... kinda a stretch
    Cause we do with the comic saga written by the creators of the show entitled, THE SEARCH

      They mention at the beginning that some of the shows on the list had the questions answered by the creators after the show ended. The important part isn't that we never got an answer, but rather that the answer was never in the original show.

    Right this one isn't unresolved but I need to get it off my chest. WHAT THE FUCK WAS THE ENDING TO HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER ALL ABOUT?! It was predictable from the outset and the last woman that Ted should have ended up with was robin. Also the whole build up to Barney marrying robin for like five series, just for it to last like two episodes was just infuriating, to the point where I can't even watch the show anymore. In addition I know a lot of people hate the show and I'm not interested in taking stick for liking it or listening to reasons why it wasn't any good in the first place.

      This reminds me of that show with Kimberly Williams-Paisley (then just KW) which took place in an idealized future, but was told in flashback. It ended after ? ten eps...(it was how i met your mother and why she made such a big difference in my life, and the world's) but they never really explained it. It was all --excuse my crassness--dick teasing for higher ratings.Which never materialized!

      I feel the exact same way (as do a few members of my family). We can't even watch any of the reruns anymore (even though it was one of my favorite shows), because the last season/finale RUINED the entire series. AAARRRRGGGGGGG!!!!!

    Two excellent examples left out:
    Soap: This show ended after four seasons with a number of open storylines. Burt Campbell is about to be ambushed by thugs, Jessica Tate is about to be executed by revolutionaries and Chester Tate is about to kill Danny Dallas for sleeping with his wife. Plus, Jodie has been regressed to a past life as an old Jewish man. We did get some resolution of the Jessica storyline on her appearance on Benson, but the others are left open.
    And that brings up another example: Benson, which ended after eight seasons as Benson and Governor Gatling are sitting together waiting to hear the results of the upcoming election in which they competed against each other.

    Thanks for the acknowledgement that some ended in other forms. "Angel" has had a good run in comics, for instance.
