    For those of us that worked on the development of the B2 Spirit over 40 years ago... especially the scaled model and wind tunnel testing... congrats to Freewing for making a beautiful RC to grace our skies.

    • @mitseraffej5812
      @mitseraffej5812 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think they did cheat a little. Notice how the split aileron/ spoiler was partially deployed on both sides when flying straight. This would gives it some innate directional stability at the cost of efficiency.

      @@txkflier yeah, and modern 3-axis flight stabilization has come a long way. That said, a wing like this isn't exactly EASY to fly either I'd wager.

    • @enginerdy
      @enginerdy 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Flying wings aren’t inherently unstable, but they have very bad stall & spin recovery characteristics. Horton and Northrop’s original designs were all manually piloted.

    • @txkflier
      @txkflier 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@enginerdy The N-9M and YB-35 had prop shafts above the wing that had fairings under them that were essentially vertical tails. The YB-49 had 8 vertical tails, 4 above and 4 below the wing located on the inside and outside of the engines. So, the Northrop wings probably did have some yaw stability. All three used clamshell drag rudders near the wingtips for yaw control. Since the hinge line of them is swept back, leaving them partially open adds to the yaw stability. As one wingtip moves ahead of the other, the drag on it increases while the drag decreases on the one that’s lagging. It works, but drag is not a very efficient way to stabilize an aircraft. It’s also not good to mess with the airfoil shape at the wingtip.

    Great decoy. If I were the US Air Force I would buy 3000 of these, a send five in front of any real B2 flight. With the right paint and tuning, I'm sure you could make the radar return exactly, the same. Of course the range and speed would be different. Maybe you could load a batch of them onto a refuelling plane, then dump them out the back door, as soon as the B2 is done getting it's top up.

    I thought I read that without computer assist the B2 flying wing is uncontrollable. So how is he able to achieve such stable flight with this model?

    • @stevehislop
      @stevehislop 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I thought the same. Looking forward to the answer.

    • @jerryg.5923
      @jerryg.5923 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The full size B-2 is fly by wire and does not use cables and mechanical mixers like most of the earlier flying wings did to activate the various control surfaces such as combinations of aileron, rudder, elevator, and even flaps to a degree. In order for all that to occur it does require the use of a computer. Jumping to our present day computerized R/C equipment, doing the very same computerized mixing operations is a relatively easy task that requires just setting up the different servos on the model to move the correct amount and in relation to each other through menu screens on the transmitter.

    • @stevehislop
      @stevehislop 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@jerryg.5923 That answer is a bit besides my point: I do understand the "fly-by-wire" argument, but it is more than that: Between the pilot input and the flying surfaces are black boxes, which are computing what the plane has to do according to the pilot input and that is not 1:1.THAT is what I thought is the problem with an RC model as well. Hope I clarified my question.

    • @jerryg.5923
      @jerryg.5923 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@stevehislop Sorry I was actually answering @Rhyme and Reasons question. No there aren't "Black Boxes" between the pilot and the control surfaces there is a flight behavior computer and it is part of the fly by wire system. You are correct the input is not 1:1 but that is the full size A/C, as far as the model is concerned since it is a model and there have been model flying wings around for decades that have flown quite well. Back in the day we mixed the control surfaces using mechanical levers and sliding servo trays. Today we can do that same thing just with programming on the transmitter just by going through some menus and setting it all up. Even though it looks like a B-2 it is not a shrunk down B-2, the model has been no doubt designed from the ground up to fly like any other R/C flying wing. It still would follow the same center of gravity center of pressure as any other model to produce stable flight. What ever inherent instabilities found on the full size aircraft aren't necessarily going to be present in an R/C model that has been designed correctly. If you properly place the center of gravity and the center of pressure properly you can make a stop sign fly by R/C, yes it's been done.

    What a thing of Beauty! A totally beautiful aircraft! AND, she's so quiet, with the fans internal there isn't another modern RC out there that is as beautiful as this! I want one SO BAD, the B-2 Spirit is already an aircraft that stuns just by the way she looks, and her performance is just as graceful, when the new 6th Generation FIghter aircraft comes out, I wager it will be just as stunning, I can barely wait, but for now I guess I will have to make due with scale models of the aircraft. thanks for sharing the inaugural flight with us!

    It can fly without gyro? On only gyro? Could you demonstrate how channels are configurated and what aileron will move? For example how it support up/down - what ailerons they move. And how it do rudder? What ailerons will move? I see that it has air breaks, but does it have flaps?

    • @Mrtcoltpilot56

    Badas* bird sir, I'd love to have one of them someday. Can I ask how much it cost you? Like to see the preachers procedure before flying n controller settings ect. I am assuming it has a RC gas engine n electric servos? I have a 5k helicopter thats never been flown due to I can't find someone to walk through the training phase n even how to start it with out loosing fingers. I got a DJI Mavic 2 drone a couple years ago n absolutely love it. It wasn't hard at all to fly once I got over the jitters of maybe having it fly away. Laugh I actually had that happen to me during a night flight with my high leds lights. I run becons on it n a GPS bug. Marco Polo I think it's called? Worth every penny for it. I luckily found it a 1/2 mile away from my woods n meadows. I think a planes radar may have messed it up as my smart controller kept flashing like it was pkup by the sweep of radar.
    I am a ole paradog myself, n love flying. Just be nice to have someone that knows what they're doing with my first flight of my Raptor helicopter. How long does a gallon of fuel stay goodvfor, as its 13 yrs old but still sealed? I subscribed to your channel n will check it out asap. Thanks for sharing your new bird, as that is so damn cool. I actually know a guy that flew B2 wing during both Gulf Wars while we were just advanced 11Bs, cough... You obviously are extremely well gifted flying.
