Why did you say KARD *was* ?? They're still very much together. The only thing is J.Seph has enlisted for his 2 year service which almost all male idol has to do. Hearing "was" when speaking of KARD lowkey turned me off 🥴
I’m sure she misspoke/had a tiny mistake, the rest of the segment she used present tense. It’s hard to edit audio and video, research AND write a script.
BM has already said that the group may disband soon due to the financial situation of their company, and their most recent comeback would be their last. There's a high chance that they may have to leave their company and there's an even lower chance that they will all be able to sign on to the same company. So no, they are not very much not together in that sense. BM is continuing with his podcast in America, Somin has her own TH-cam channel where she gets sponsorships and jiwoo just colaunched a makeup line/set. They recently had a sportswear & a traditional clothing sponsorship for social but that might not be enough to get their company out of their financial rut and keep them together.
KARD breaking the barriers and stigma in the kpop industry, BM started producing for Kard cus they faced difficulties looking for producers to make songs for co-ed groups.. props to them 👏🏻🔥😊
I think is extra harder for them because the guys can't sing. If they could maybe more producers would work with them. I don't think it's hard to make songs for co-ed group but when the girls can burst high notes out and the guys can't,that's when the problem comes. 😖
@@pinksus5528 That's not the problem. There is nothing wrong with the guys being "only" rappers. Coed groups have to find a suitable key for both genders in a song. The pitch has to flatter both genders voices and that's really hard to do. Females voices are generally higher and males lower, so that's why most producers don't want to make the extra effort and choose the easy way out by only producing for boy/girlgroups. Kard said that most producers don't want to work with them and that's why it takes them longer to do a cameback. That is the reason why Kards BM has begun to make music for his own group and he's damn good at it. Proven by his solos, kards last comeback gunshot and some of their previous songs.
Also, co-eds are perfect for people who prefer platonic relationships/ role models with different genders. From the girls group = role models and boys group = objects of desire fantasies, I feel like, through that train of thought, co-ed groups would be the perfect fit for people who prefer platonic relationships and would rather imagine themselves being friends with these people and appreciating their talents or would like a role model regardless of gender, among others that don’t fit into these target niches. Plus, they’re just plain amazing. I hope to see more co-ed groups in the future and thank you for informing us about them!
kard is like one of my fave kpop groups ever like it was so refreshing seeing them the first time because it was so different (in a good way ofc) but i really wish their company would promote them more
I supported Sieun ever since Ramisu and Suri ever since AMOR. So when Sieun was announced as a member of CHECKMATE I was hooked, and then they also added Suri! Like... I was speechless. Also since I mentioned AMOR, y'all know MoA joined Blue Fox right? Y'all listened to "Wake Me Up", like y'all HAVE to. It's like one of the best Anime songs and it's not even an anime song.
@@strwbrysodaa yes, but at this point I'm not even sure if BlueFox are still a group, their official pages are quiet, and Eyaki deleted BlueFox from her description, she still spends time with a group of girls and follows the group on IG, so its also possible BlueFox had a lineup change and they want to stabilize the lineup to then introduce the members and then theyll make a comeback. Speaking about comebacks did you hear that HINT will finally have comeback after more then two years of inactivity?
If female groups are to be looked up to, and male groups are for the fangirling romanticization... Then maybe co ed should be about self insert, at least as long as it's about all that. A group could be called Y/N.
Honestly co-ed groups would thrive if people were mature especially knetz. Just because a group is made up of both male and female doesn’t mean they will end up dating🙄. In the end co-ed groups see each other as siblings or friends. I honestly hope that in this generation co-ed groups get given a chance. Also the media especially kmedia needs to stop making up these stories about “rumors” of members “dating” because when they do that shit they make the people believe that there is something going on when in reality there isn’t.
Honestly, I think there needs to be more co-ed groups out there. Male and female voices can complement each other so well and really bring the music to another level. AKMU has some of the best songs in the entire industry, and has one of the chillest fanbases in all of Kpop, because you know people are there for the music and not the fantasy of having a boyfriend or girlfriend. 1, they're brother and sister, and 2, they don't meet the conventional Korean beauty standards, so they can just focus on creating good content without having to worry about "offending" overly-obsessed fans or getting accused of dating each other. I wish more companies would follow suit and focus on the content rather than selling some kind of unobtainable fantasy to fans; that way, the possibility of scandals would be mitigated, and there would also be less possibility of attracting sasaengs. Good music is good music, regardless of where it comes from, and I think co-ed groups are a gigantic untapped well of potential that more companies need to take advantage of. And honestly, who cares if some of the members start to date as long as they can keep it professional and create good content?
I think there is a big difference between a pop/indie/hip hop groups and a idol group. Idols are pop dance focused groups that prioritize forming parasocial relationships with a young fandom over traditional focuses on musicality, vocal performance, lyricism and targeting the public. Kpop idols also usually form these bonds in gendered and gendered stereotypical ways. SHARP I'm not sure was a idol group as the "idol" wasn't as a solid concept, but they were a pop act. There scandal was not them being mixed gender but the bullying by one female member to another. Roo'ra wasn't a pop group but a hip hop dance group. Their scandals had to do with plagiarism and not them being co-ed. AKMU is not a idol group, their a folk pop duo that emphasize on the qualities I listed above which idols do not. There are also quit a few popular non-idol coed groups in S. Korea that are mainly indie pop like Urban Zakapa & Clazziquai Project. I-fans may not know more about them bec they really just listen to idol music, a few hip/rnb acts, and the occasional indie pop acts like Blob4 or AKMU who make it to them. Frankly coed groups have found mainstream success in SK across genres since the 90's. I don't see a lack of them more then in other markets. The real issue are modern kpop coed idol groups. KARD is a good example of the issues a coed idol group might face. On the one hand they have to build new parasocial dynamics with kpop fans that have a big potential to fail. On the other Koreans who don't focus on parasocial relations in music are a potential audience but probably won't give them a chance because of the stigmas surrounding the musicianship of idol because of focuses on fandoms and stereotypes. Gaining the general public could be another way if a following is not easy to find. But the company either has to be big enough or inspired enough to reach the general audience. DSP is neither.
I wish kpop tried to be as riskier as it were in 2010-2014 In latin america any kid knows to name a coed group, be it coming from Telenovelas like Rebelde/Quasi angeles/etc or pop music like regional or international. In north america I dont remember no pop teenage coed group
Some of my fav pop groups in the past have been mixed boys and girls so I was wondering why this is not as noticeable in kpop. Thnx for this video. Would love to see more co-ed for sure.
Kpop seriously NEEDS way more co-ed groups and them to be successful in Korea. It would be great for that big portion of kpop fans that must grow up and stop being immature and embarassing by randomly shipping idols for every single sort of male-female interaction they see and spreading rumors🤦♀️
Wow, there were more than I thought. I knew there were a couple of them, Kard are incredible! I love them. Their choreography looks so difficult! I admire them for all they do!
I know Roo'Ra. CHIC&IDLE released a rearranged version of their song "3! 4!". If someone did listen to it yet... well... I mean... it would be cool if u did.
Honestly, I can see Co-Ed groups making it. Absolutely. The only thing that’s really stopping them are the traditional definitions of masculinity and femininity, which make it hard for companies to market groups. As long as the/every group has chemistry, grip to their artistry, control over their music and passion, they can make music, or even hits. I think the more we bind idols/people to our concepts of gender, it’s going to restrict them from ever being human and expressing themselves the way they want to. And shippers who want to sexualise every man and woman who come in contact with each other. Especially them. *Especially them.*
Co-ed groups have so much unexplored potential but companies are too afraid to debut them. Especially nowadays people assume every male and female idol who make eye contact with each other are dating
Checkmate seems promising but I am slightly salty about the similarity with Kard, it is just too close to be a coincidence. I mean a game of cards and a game of chess, plus we have also seen Kard use chess in their mvs (I am well aware that it is not exclusive to Kard) but the concept, styling and vibe of the mv/song is just too close to go unnoticed. But I'll give them the benefit of the doubt, most debuting groups have a similar concept to another and usually they venture out in another style that suits their personality more.
You read my mind, I was thinking the exact same thing! Haha. Now, I may be a bit biased since I've been stanning KARD since You & Me era. Checkmate's song was good, but I was just a bit thrown off about the chess thing (Checkmate) / Card thing (KARD). Apart from the fact that, I personally felt their style was a bit alike to KARD's. Now, I'm also gonna give them the benefit of the doubt, since they just started and ofc they probably aren't the ones choosing what to do. Their debut song wasn't my favorite, but I really hope they can get by, being a co-ed is hard in SK. Anuway, hope coed groups can be a bit more accepted, and the stigma is forgotten :)
They definitely have that exact same house sound, but I think you're reaching a bit with some of the other stuff like Cards vs. Chess. Even if the name was inspired by Kard's "game theme" name, it is still completely different. I do agree the styling is similar, but this styling has been popular in kpop for a while now, so it just seems like they're following mainstream styling. Same with music video concept being pretty mainstream in kpop.
@@lrose1310 I don't know, I still find it a bit too coincidental that the only other "modern" co-ed group is also named after a traditional game AND has a similar concept/MV style. I mean one element fine, but both? Hmmm... I am definitely not hating on them but it just surprised me. I hope they get more experimental and use the voices more mixed up, (I want to hear some harmonies as well).
I thought about creating a video analysis on how co-ed groups dominate Latin America and for us it’s almost the expected but Im not good with technology. My parents had groups like Timbiriche, and Garibaldi..the 90’s/00’s brought huge groups like Kabab, OV7, and the megastars RBD who just announced a reunion show this December after 12 years and beat BTS record on Spotify just recently. I mean this is why KARD has done so well internationally and especially in Latin America, we LOVE co-Ed groups.
I'm a die-hard KARD stan, they're like a breath of fresh air, in a world, that can be incredibly stale with concepts we've seen a thousand times.. Checkmate sounds promising, as well, looking forwards to see, where they go next!
It makes me sad to think that the members of kard said that their most recent comeback may be their last. BM mentioned that their company is struggling financially which may cause their disbandment. This makes me so sad, but I hope the other members will be able to continue with their solo promotions at least while jseph is in the military.
Here how I would put it: A lot K-pop fans think K-pop groups are dating services or only support an idol because of looks or wanting to date them . So when they hang out with a different gender, their delusional Fantasy's get shut down for some reason. Whereas other groups like 1D when Harry was dating Kendall, most Directioner's didn't care.
I think SM could prpduce an amazing CoEd group, knowing their past projects with SuperM and NCT, I think it would be really cool to see a combination of their idols in a CoEd unit
It feels like such a childish reason to not have more coed groups like "oh no! if we leave boys and girls together in the same building they are going to kiss! that's horrible!" i mean first of all, gay people exist, karen, there must be a good portion of idols who are lgbt and date with people from other groups or even with people from their same group without us knowing, second of all not just because a girl and a boy have to work together it means they HAVE to like eachother romantically, i mean, most of us spend 12+ in school surrounded by other people and we don't go around kissing everyone just bc they're "there", and third... what about it ? i know every country has its own "rules" and habits but maybe it's time to stop seeing two people date as a huge scandal, it's not a scandal is basically how nature works
I honestly think that if one of the Big 3 or HYBE debuts a co-ed group people would go crazy for them. Like it or not,K-pop is mainly about the visuals...co-ed groups like AKMU, Kard and Checkmate haven't found that BIG success domestically because their visuals don't appeal to Koreans.
How does mixed gender groups Diminish the fantasy? Just because a male and female are singing together it doesn’t insinuate they are a couple and fans can still fantasize a relationship with a member etc that doesn’t make sense to me for example I think BM is hot and it doesn’t bother me he sings with females I still think he’s gorgeous lol
I will never forgive haters and puke entertainment for what they did to Triple H, and specially Hyuna and Hyojong. I loved that group so so so much, I miss that retro vibe...
K-Tigers Zero is another coed group that debuted not too long ago. They are really talented dancers and do taekwondo as well as being a K-pop group. Also Walwari is another iconic coed group.
Something that also needs to e taken into consideration is when you keep sexes separate, it's easier to let sexism flourish. The kpop industry thrives on sexism and relies heavily on gender roles, so when you blur the line between what concepts a male can do and what concepts a female can do, not only does it tear down some of those barriers keeping women and men unequal, but it allows gender roles and sex to come in question in general.
I don't really stan Kard but I'm interested in them as well as Checkmate (Drum is a bop). I wish we had more co-ed groups without people assuming they're gonna end up dating. I mean, even if they do, it doesn't concern me cuz it's not my life. The whole "kpop idols are reserved for fans" thing is dumb. I just want good songs and funny memes/content to bring me from the dead every day after school lmao. Like, Twice are my ults and I used to have tiny crushes on some of them a few years back but I didn't even bat an eye when I heard that Jihyo and Momo are in relationships with other idols. I'm happy for them and that's how others should feel as well. As for the "girls and guys can't be friends without developing feelings" myth - it's just plain idiotic. I've known a guy from kindergarten and we still hang out sometimes so we get the "aww are you a couple?" questions even though he's gay, I'm a lesbian and he's like 4 years younger than me lol
I find co-eds really interesting. I take a bit more interest in them because they are co-ed. I want them to offer something visually & musically interesting, but ... I'm mixed on if that's the case. Kard I like. Checkmate, who disbanded but days ago, I enjoyed, but I thought had some things right and some things off. I think they failed to work with the two genders. The guys had no distinct look, but the girls did, while the dancing didn't utilize the two genders. Others who come to mind like 777, Triple H, and you could even include HyunA & Dawn, didn't do much for me musically. I think the issue is the "racy choreography" ... um, its boys and girls together, that is what we want!
I really love Kard 😍😍 I think coed groups are much more known and accepted here in America, it's so sad😥 They deserve so much more recognition in their home country.
I was perusing TH-cam when the algorithm blessed me with this video. I subscribed to your channel by the end of this video. I plan on binging your videos tonight. I'm new to Kpop and I want to learn about it. Channels like yours are a huge help. You guys need to make a video on KPOP and Shipping. Please consider it.
It might not happen in South Korea in my lifetime, but I think it would be cool to have a K-Pop group who are not boys or girls, but a different gender or non-binary or gender neutral.
Unfortunately Checkmate has already lost a member, but personally I think an even number a boys and girls makes for a better group dynamic, also for co-Ed groups the smaller groups seemed to do better. I wish all the best for all co-Ed groups, they has always been some of my favorites. 💜
Checkmate already has a big potential fanbase outside South Korea, but I fear the pandemic can trouble them with world tours and stuff. I think their song is more fitting of the Korean audience than Kard (to quote PD from Form of Therapy "Kard produces songs that only fit Kard, Checkmate's "Drum" could be done by either a boy or a girl group") so I believe they can get a good enough popularity if the promotion is done right. Also, on a side note, since Mnet loves to spit out one survival show after another, it wouldn't be bad if they did one with a co-ed group. What more can they lose? It's acceptable to have bad press on altered voting but not on possible romance? /s
I don't mind mixed gender groups, and I'm a fan of BTS, TWICE and Weeekly. The groups I don't stan but like anyways are Gfriend, Tomorrow X Together, aespa, ITZY, Red Velvet, MOMOLAND, OH MY GIRL, Stray Kids, LOONA and SEVENTEEN. All of those are one gendered groups, but I don't mind groups with more than one gender. RDW I agree but since they are targeted to Westerners I don’t think e care as much if they are co-ed or not. I think having Seulgi and/or Wendy would have been amazing (idk too much about Fx)
I really hope bigger companies consider to make a co-Ed group because it might be able to attract K-fans and not just I-fans
I understand why akmu is a stand out exception here they're siblings so scandals are unlikely and they're wholesome sibling "indie"-ish coffee shop image seems quite marketable

We can't let KARD disband 😭 they are the best co-ed group I've seen!
I think she was referring to their past, as in how they started out/their conception.
Later in the same segment she says they're still going strong.
I was also kind of triggered but I get that she was using the past to refer to the time when the group was formed
I would love to see more Co-Ed groups! KARD and AKMU are my top 2 favorites and they need more love!
kard is like one of my fave kpop groups ever like it was so refreshing seeing them the first time because it was so different (in a good way ofc) but i really wish their company would promote them more
I supported Sieun ever since Ramisu and Suri ever since AMOR.
It's like one of the best Anime songs and it's not even an anime song.
omg wait moa is in blue fox ??
@@strwbrysodaa yes, but at this point I'm not even sure if BlueFox are still a group, their official pages are quiet, and Eyaki deleted BlueFox from her description, she still spends time with a group of girls and follows the group on IG, so its also possible BlueFox had a lineup change and they want to stabilize the lineup to then introduce the members and then theyll make a comeback.
Speaking about comebacks did you hear that HINT will finally have comeback after more then two years of inactivity?
I love KARD I’m waiting on my autographed “gunshot” album from mwave as we speak 🥰
So cool congrats
I miss Troublemaker.
Glad i stan KARD since debut, they are amazing.
TIME TO WATCH SOME TEA
Lol
If female groups are to be looked up to, and male groups are for the fangirling romanticization... Then maybe co ed should be about self insert, at least as long as it's about all that. A group could be called Y/N.
Toxic people: kpop male idols can’t be in the same group as female idols
Co Ed groups: enters the chat*
I mean I don’t think they are toxic they just know that people are gonna way overboard with the shipping
The K-Nerd yep I agree
The K-Nerd that's true
Kpop companies: we can't have co-ed group they will gonna date
No one:
Literally no one:
Kard:yeet kpop companies
Honestly co-ed groups would thrive if people were mature especially knetz. Just because a group is made up of both male and female doesn’t mean they will end up dating🙄. In the end co-ed groups see each other as siblings or friends. I honestly hope that in this generation co-ed groups get given a chance. Also the media especially kmedia needs to stop making up these stories about “rumors” of members “dating” because when they do that shit they make the people believe that there is something going on when in reality there isn’t.
K-Tigers Zero debuted last year (7 males / 5 females), hoping they come back soon. We need more co-ed groups.
Let me bring my coffee and listen you spilling some tea
DSP is neither.
being an idol is degreading
I wish kpop tried to be as riskier as it were in 2010-2014
In latin america any kid knows to name a coed group, be it coming from Telenovelas like Rebelde/Quasi angeles/etc or pop music like regional or international.
AKMU "scandals" be like: lmao chanhyuk unfollowed suhyun, did they fight?
I know Roo'Ra. CHIC&IDLE released a rearranged version of their song "3! 4!".
If someone did listen to it yet... well... I mean... it would be cool if u did.
3:11 When i heard "Triple H" in co-ed Group. I sudenly remember Triple H as WWE Wrestler and WWE Excecutive. *SorryOffTopic.
i want a yg coed group idk if its just me but that would be the best thing yg would have done
i smell an underrated channel
I wish there were more co-ed groups and I also wish that Kard would get more exposure in Korea ♥
Please support Checkmate, they have debuted a month ago with their song Drum, don't let them disband
I can't believe that one of the first people to like-
Anyway I love your videos 💗💗
I saw Ravi and eunha and I chocked on my water :D
LOVED THIS PLEASE DO A VIDEO ON PINK FANTASY
I thought about creating a video analysis on how co-ed groups dominate Latin America and for us it’s almost the expected but Im not good with technology. My parents had groups like Timbiriche, and Garibaldi..the 90’s/00’s brought huge groups like Kabab, OV7, and the megastars RBD who just announced a reunion show this December after 12 years and beat BTS record on Spotify just recently. I mean this is why KARD has done so well internationally and especially in Latin America, we LOVE co-Ed groups.

Nasty nasty: am I joke to you???
Yes. Nasty nasty is like the “reverse” of Triple H lol.

Such a shame Checkmate disbanded a year after they debuted....
I'm a die-hard KARD stan, they're like a breath of fresh air, in a world, that can be incredibly stale with concepts we've seen a thousand times.. Checkmate sounds promising, as well, looking forwards to see, where they go next!
Honestly l like co-ed groups more than same gender groups
It makes me sad to think that the members of kard said that their most recent comeback may be their last. BM mentioned that their company is struggling financially which may cause their disbandment. This makes me so sad, but I hope the other members will be able to continue with their solo promotions at least while jseph is in the military.
I want more co’ed groups with new idols.. not debuted idols from other groups and put together temporarily ✨✨🥺🙏🏻
Here how I would put it:
A lot K-pop fans think K-pop groups are dating services or only support an idol because of looks or wanting to date them .
Imagine how bg or gg group only stans feel about co-ed groups
It feels like such a childish reason to not have more coed groups like "oh no! if we leave boys and girls together in the same building they are going to kiss! that's horrible!" i mean first of all, gay people exist, karen, there must be a good portion of idols who are lgbt and date with people from other groups or even with people from their same group without us knowing, second of all not just because a girl and a boy have to work together it means they HAVE to like eachother romantically, i mean, most of us spend 12+ in school surrounded by other people and we don't go around kissing everyone just bc they're "there", and third... what about it ? i know every country has its own "rules" and habits but maybe it's time to stop seeing two people date as a huge scandal, it's not a scandal is basically how nature works
yunjae
Wasn't jessi also a part of coed group lucky j?
Can you please do a video explaining the different types of concepts in K-pop one day?
I honestly think that if one of the Big 3 or HYBE debuts a co-ed group people would go crazy for them. Like it or not,K-pop is mainly about the visuals...co-ed groups like AKMU, Kard and Checkmate haven't found that BIG success domestically because their visuals don't appeal to Koreans.
I think big hit will most likely debut a co-Ed group
AKMU is big in Korea but not in other countries lol. They're not idols.
What a cool coincidence it was that you released this video! I just found out about CHECKMATE on Spotify today.
Check out KTigers Zero too, they're a coed Taekwondo x Dance Kpop group!
I wish we could have more coed stages. Fandom culture makes it into such a scandal when any female and male idols interact 🙄
The way I just discovered TroubleMaker and mourning the loss of them when you post this.
I will never forgive haters and puke entertainment for what they did to Triple H, and specially Hyuna and Hyojong. I loved that group so so so much, I miss that retro vibe...
Everyone go check out another co-ed group “k-tigers zero”, they debut a year ago
Their two title tracks are “now” and “sidekick”
K-Tigers Zero is another coed group that debuted not too long ago. They are really talented dancers and do taekwondo as well as being a K-pop group. Also Walwari is another iconic coed group.
I LOVE Troublemaker!!!! My kind of music, my kind of vibe, my kind of duo! Also LOVE Triple H and Kard!! 😍😍😍😍😍
Oh LAWD....Plz protect KARD 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
We need more co-Ed groups :(
Also we cant let KARD and checkmate disband
Something that also needs to e taken into consideration is when you keep sexes separate, it's easier to let sexism flourish. The kpop industry thrives on sexism and relies heavily on gender roles, so when you blur the line between what concepts a male can do and what concepts a female can do, not only does it tear down some of those barriers keeping women and men unequal, but it allows gender roles and sex to come in question in general.
THANK U FOR TALKING ABOUT SUNNY HILL
I wish coed groups were more accepted in South Korea just like it is in Japan
I was perusing TH-cam when the algorithm blessed me with this video. I subscribed to your channel by the end of this video. I plan on binging your videos tonight. I'm new to Kpop and I want to learn about it. Channels like yours are a huge help.
You guys need to make a video on KPOP and Shipping. Please consider it.
What about K-Tigers Zero, Lalary, and others?
wahhh you're so close to 50k subs, im proud to say that im fan before 50k
I've been a fan of kard disincentive the beginning, hoep Checkmate gets to live long too!
I feel may be SM can take a step and launch a co-ed group in future! Since they are good at experimenting new things so far
When i was new to kpop it was so odd to me i never see a a boy and girl in a single group
6:38 does anyone know where I can find the original video?
I don't mind mixed gender groups, and I'm a fan of BTS, TWICE and Weeekly. The groups I don't stan but like anyways are Gfriend, Tomorrow X Together, aespa, ITZY, Red Velvet, MOMOLAND, OH MY GIRL, Stray Kids, LOONA and SEVENTEEN. All of those are one gendered groups, but I don't mind groups with more than one gender. However, I'm not going to stan or dislike a group for being mixed genders, and I don't care what gender somebody is.
I mean.... Triple H don't exactly help the case....
*But the love is cute anyways*
what about 'K tigers ziro'!!
Support Checkmate. We're the pawns. Fighting.
I think that if they decided to go for it NCT will one day have a coed sub group. Probably 2025.
2:25 is that G Dragon and Wendy?
i'm currently writing a story about a co-ed group with sixteen members and i'm trying to avoid the stereotype of it just all being dating scandals as best i can (they're all just friends who are so sarcastic with each other but they love each other to death nonetheless)
