Louis Armstrong & Danny Kaye - When the Saints Go Marching In

- Last week would have been Danny Kaye's 100th birthday. If you've never seen this video of Danny Kaye and the great Satchmo (Louis Armstrong) performing "When the Saints Go Marching In" from The Five Pennies, do yourself a favor and take 3 minutes and 20 seconds to watch it. It's good stuff... you won't be disappointed! Happy belated birthday David Daniel Kaminsky, AKA Danny Kaye!
THIS WAS THE GREATEST AMOUNT OF TALENT IN HISTORY. THESE TWO GENTLEMEN HAD MORE TALENT IN THEIR PINKY THEN WHAT YOU SEE IN HOLLYWOOD TODAY. THAT WAS THE GOLDEN ERA.
With just these two, I agree there is a LOT of talent, but Danny and Louis would later play together with Benny Goodman, Tommy Dorsey, Lionel Hampton, Mel Powell, Buck and Bubbles, and more in "A Song Is Born."
With all due respect, The Five Pennies in 1959 is not really remembered that well.
I’ll take High Society in 1956 with Bing Crosby. Louis and his band both open the film as well as close it. Then, of course, you add in Frank Sinatra and Grace Kelly.
Que no te quepa la menor duda Norman.
Amen.
I was very young (8) and loved to watch them on 📺. I too miss watching good old movies. 😢
There must have been 3 billion dollars worth of talent on that stage during this production. Watching Lous Armstrong and Danny Kaye is like seeing Michelangelo sculpt and Da Vinci paint. A true template for all others to follow.
Always wanted to see this picture. Thanks!
Danny Kaye was a great mimic, but I prefer Bing Crosby with Louis 3 years earlier in High Society.
We must continue to share this talent with the universe!
Wonderful performance! Either of these two dudes on their own is fabulous to listen to, but together, they're just totally incredible! Fantastic!!! 😁
If you never saw this film (The Five Pennies), this scene is the best, but the movie will have you in tears.
Très beau film.
So true
Two legendary singers singing together in one of the best performances ever. I really love this 😃
The scatting in the end was unbelievably powerful and under control. 😳
How happy I am to have known this era, thanks god !
I'm sitting in a line of trucks at a railroad waiting my turn to get loaded. Listening to great music. GOD IS GOOD ALL THE TIME.
Thank you Jimmy, fellow trucker. Good for you. God is good.
@Jerry Kinnin......thank God for you truckers...you are the heartbeat 💓 of America. Without truckers we are doomed. If you eat it, use it, wear it or touch it....it came by truck! God Bless you all.....keep Rollin Jerry! 🚐 🚚 🚌
I'm 82 now and this show reminded me of my father who taught me to love jazz when I was a girl and I still remember the melody and words. Me favorite singer was and still is, is Louis Armstrong.
Holy Cow! This is one of the most AMAZING duets from two of the most talented performers in Hollywood history!! Armstrong and Danny Kaye were great on their own...but put them together here....the result is pure magic! I'm sure you're both now making the angels smile in Heaven. :))
Holy cow 🐄 stinks to
Google Pavarotti and James Brown duet of
Thus is a Man's World. ❤
Wow!!! The power of these super stars
Danny Kaye was pure talent
Why aren’t more people watching this? It is pure gold. Two artists at the top of their game
I'm certain that over these many years that this video has had millions of views.
Those people were really talented. The world will always remember them.
That has got to be the best musical performance ever recorded! A must watch and listen for ALL!
Yep...& Louis Armstrong's contribution to Hollywood movies was phenomenal. High Society & On Her Majesty's Secret Service (James Bond theme) to name just two.
What a joy to find this- stunning!
September 2023. I just watched A song is born with these two fabulous gentlemen, and many others in it, last night!
A fabulous movie with an incredible line up. Awesome music too!
Nothing nowadays comes close.
What a fabulous time for entertainers, they had then, Louis Armstrong, Danny Kaye, Frank Sinatra, Bing Crosby and Sammy Davis junior ,to name but a few.
Can't get any better than that!!!
OMG Danny and Armstrong such talent
Hello Miriam
This is a wonderful rendition of a fantastic song. I'd like this at my funeral!
Never saw this before. Not sure why not. It’s fabulous. 👏 🎉
People want to know how to overcome racism.... I think this clip shows exactly how to overcome it. Just two people, not caring about different skin color, having fun with music.
This makes me smile every time I watch it!😊
Samehere
There aren't enough "thumbs up" for this video!!! I was smiling as wide as Louis Armstrong!! I would say more, but I'm off to watch it again!
Outstanding historical archive version ever, never saw before !!!!!!! Scarce ever and very new on the Net ! Bravo !
Never seen this till now now that's what you call talent
Awesome. Those guys were just fantastic. Love the Frere Jacques especially.
Two of my favorite people. Their combined talents made this song unforgettable. I miss them. 😢
They were so good because they loved what they did, and one of the magical things that happens when you love what you do is that you can enter a state of flow. Practically from the beginning of the song they are in this state, but it is seen in its greatest dimension at minute 2:52
I can remember seeing this scene in the film when I was just 3 years old. Amazing, really. That must have been in 1961 or 1962.
Thank you 🙏 I appreciate never seen this great 👍 one ☝️🎺🕺🏼🎷🥁👍👏👏👏👍🎥
I feel distant. This was posted eight years ago. Today, 40k views, 31 comments. Yet a funny puppy video can get two million views and 40 thousand comments in under a year. I have to admit it is a bit of a struggle for me to square that. I used to watch these shows when I was ten years old, and they were already almost 20 years old then. We only had a black and white tv, so if they were in color, I didn't know. I was mesmerized by the passion, the energy and the talent. I would become swept away imagining myself there when it was happening, dancing with them.
Well i have allready seen everything about Armstrong, or I thought so...but I was wrong...
This color video is fantastic...
This is why jazz is everyhing the world isn't.
@@jiannisDimi I am actually asking myself how much of this (great) video is digitally restored. The sound alone sounds so good for that time, and I would love to know how they restored the audio. no way this came out like this in 196x something
@Zunderfeuer or maybe it did... maybe it was our old analog systems that rendered the audio wrong?
Oh so classic!!! Wonderful, Wonderful, wonderful!!!
I always loved this movie, The Five Pennies. I haven't seen it in years. Thank you for sharing this clip.
Brilliant, brilliant, brilliant
What an era.
Two of my favourite performers of all time
Good old days of jazz, , blues and boogie
Absolutely Fabulous!!!
It is hard to believe how fantastic they are!
Man that was just fantastic. Louis and Danny. Who would have thought.
Outstanding archive in stereophonic soundtrack, a must !😁
Danny Kaye and Louis Armstrong can't get better ❤️
I knew Louis was awesome singer , but never dream Danny could sing like that .
One of my favorite movies to watch late-night as a teen. And again during new baby's late night Daddy's 'feeding' turn.
I always loved to watch Danny Kaye..he had a talent to make you smile and cheer you up in his movies. Indeed those were beautiful times !
such huge talents..music...dance..acting. danny kaye as the jester and the poison cup riddle was super.
Pure Musikalität auf höchstem Niveau..... absoluter Wahnsinn...echte Profis bei der Arbeit...die Leichtigkeit mit dem schwierige Hürden zu nehmen sind...bis zum Ende schauen...🎉
Oh myhosh!! I have to save this one. It is fantastic!! Love Louis! Danny is good and funny. Beautiful.
I first heard of this movie when my parent brought home the soundtrack album when I was a child in the 1960s or so. We all enjoyed listening to it back then. I saw the actual movie for the first time just a few months ago. It’s a loose dramatization of the life of Loring “Red” Nichols (who is the actual performer of Danny Kaye’s trumpet parts).
All the original songs were composed by Sylvia Fine, who happened to be Danny Kaye’s wife. A talented powerhouse duo, one on-screen and one off-screen.
A highlight of the movie is three different songs all based on the same chord progressions. And then sung on top of one another at the same time, by three different characters.
Soo sooo gifted and talented!!
Hello Julia
I knew Louis Armstrong was great but I didn't realize how good Danny Kaye was
Guess you never watched Danny Kaye in Hans Christen Andersen... The man can sing, very well...

Making music with such joy!!! 💖💖💖
Hello Brunella
Que artista más completo era Danny Kaye, cantaba, bailaba .....era una maravilla

Danny trying to mimic Louis' rough voice had me in stitches. Good grief, that was funny.

A great number. They had fun preparing it and still have fun performing it. So well rehearsed that it seems impromptu. Bravo depuis Montréal.
