That's exactly what I was thinking here. And as can be seen in other videos as well, not only is he very creative and a fantastic multi-instrumentalist but he also has an AMAZING singing voice.
Please do more of this! I could totally go back, through all of the old and entertaining shows and pull this kind of detail out, but this concise format and the summary are excellent. Once a month, pretty please?
Your here for someone who runs a pedal company making videos that use other peoples content when he's promoting his own pedals...? Would you be happy if Gibson were doing "react" videos to people playing various guitars to promote their own products...?
For those who don't know, there's also a third guy on guitar called Ed O'Brien who does the Memory Man / whammy / loopy tricks 🧐 Check out our good ol' Mick & Dan's That Pedal Show 😊
And if anyone does check out Mick & Dan's That Pedal Show be prepared to sit through about an hour of them... talking... really... slowly... with... ... long... ... ... pauses and many, many "ums" "ahs" and more pauses before they get to the point. I find them to be completely unwatchable.
Also a huge Radiohead fan, and think Nick really captured the vibe/spirit of Jonny and / or Thom. I remember looking for a Marshall Shredmaster after hearing Creep, and deciding I didn't want to spend that much just to sound kinda like someone who played a lot better than I did. Still love mixing and matching pedals in pursuit of weird sounds (currently getting a lot of interesting noises out of an old Digitech 2-second Delay Sampler), which is what I'm pretty sure Jonny/Thom/Radiohead are doing.
Hey you showed my uncles bass! That white P-Bass that Colin Greenwood was playing used to be my uncles. They traded basses at a show -my uncles got his old music man that is in the Just music video - in San Diego and that became Colins main bass! Awesome video guys I love Radiohead and the JHS show, even though I don't have any JHS pedal lol I suppose I need the Pulp N Peel and Colorbox for that then now XD
Wow, very impressive. Though I’ve seen him playing bass occasionally, and lots of drums, I didn’t know Nick is a very talented multi-instrumentalist! This was a cool watch. Sorry Josh, I can’t say what I would use, because I’ve personally never “gotten” the whole Radiohead deal. Your comments about them being “weird” really summarize my opinion. And that’s weird, because I’m a recovering “music snob” who likes lots of other truly alternative music. Anyhow, thanks for posting and hope y’all are having a great “Black Friday.”
Fellas, thanks for acting like we did when we were young… you look like you have fun. That’s why I always tune in; you take me back to when my friends and I tried to get certain sounds right, delighted in each others playing and creativity, and shared that great feeling when we discovered some sound and wondered how we’d work it in to a jam. Turned 60 yesterday, and I’m just as excited to scratch the money together to get the Flight Delay as when I was a kid saving for a pedal! 😊
Also another opportunity to talk about dirty P bass and Stingray sounds, but with the added opportunity to talk about 5-strings which doesn't really happen often in JHS land.
Nick amazing work thank you. Josh so glad to hear I am not alone with the geeking out on the Radiohead Basement Sessions. Love your show. Cheers Cheers
This should be a series. I really liked this. The only thing I would have added to the rig would be my Old Blood Noise Endeavors dark star for some more out there reverby things. But overall this sounded great!
This is awesome! BTW - Radiohead is a must listen while aboard an airplane. Its complexity and airiness enhances the experience of flying through the air.
Do more videos like this. Showing people how to build sounds we know/love with your stuff is really inspiring. This is what sets you apart from the usual pedal and guitar channels. And keep the taste in music high. Thank you.
make that channel strip pedal, but with the ability to blend wet/dry compression, and put it in a big pedal enclosure, not a rack. 7 1/4 x 4 3/4. maybe with a footswitch input controlling a gain boost knob. it'd compete with darkglass products and win.
Honestly when I think of the Radiohead sound I think more of the combination of Thom’s riffs (and his Jazzmaster or his SG since in Rainbows), Jonny’s dry humbucker tele tone doing some whacky leads and Ed’s high pitched ambient delay sounds. But the “core” tone to me is Thom’s rhythm tracks. And they’re usually *not* on a single coil tele.
This idea needs to be a series. “Nick tries stuff” or whatever. Shakespeare taught names don’t matter that much, just worry about the thumbnail. The la lom short would be great as a full video too. And if it finishes as well as it was going I’d buy the song.
Nick did really amazing hitting that Weird Fishes sound. The only thing that might have been slightly off was the reverb tone, but that could be me being wrong, rather than Nick. This was a really interesting video. I agree with the people saying it should be a regular series. Tones I would like to see this done with: Weezer - Blue Album Hum - Downward is Heavenward The Beths - Future Me Hates Me Man…or Astro-Man - Experiment Zero and Made From Technetium Daikaiju - Phase Two The Breeders - Last Splash Reverend Horton Heat - Galaxy 500 (song, not album) Nick Hakim - Where Will We Go (song, not album) Dire Straits - Money for Nothing And many others, but I’ll stop there. 😅 Oops, one more! Ash - 1977
More of this please. I like Nick's creativity with the challenge. I like Josh's analysis and commentary. It shows people what can be done with JHS pedals. Fun stuff.
I’ve said this on shorts of yours: Flight Delay in reverse, into a Catalinbread Soft Focus (the old one, not the new one) with all the knobs dimed on bass is just awesome. I run my Soft Focus at 18v for that little extra it gives (it was great at 9v, when I tested it out, but I don’t have an empty 9v slot in my power brick. Your mileage may vary.)
I've been dreaming of a video like this. I too am fascinated with Radiohead and guitar tones. So a video that combines those 2 things....AND is from one of my favorite pedal companies?? *chef's kiss*
I always thought that Nick was a great solid drummer. Then a couple years ago I learned that he played just about everything!!! What a great musician he is. So talented!!
4:00 Also Colin doesn’t play the bass in the record version of National Anthem, that’s actually Thom. I would say Colin’s bass tone tends to be P-bass clean through Ampegs. Except for some ocasiones like Exit Music, I Might Be Wrong, the live versions of Myxomatosis and some other things like that. But they are exceptions. His core tone to me is more like the one in Nude, 15 Step, How to Disappear Completely, My Iron Lung, Separator, Identikit, Dollars and Cents, etc.
Very accurate! From the Basement has the most beautiful clean guitar sound ever recorded for me! On top of all the crazy sounds, the clean ones are top! Fantastic band
To Nick and Josh.... I leave a portal of vulnerability open to you two. But Radiohead, now? I was waiting until I was 80 to let this amazing group into the storehouse of my mind's music dynamo. But OK... as long as it was you two together. I'll keep the door open and maybe... just maybe the Purple pedal Nick has on the table will be the one this year. 2025 will be the year I return to TH-cam as the old guy with the forever mind. This year needs us all on deck... Amazing Nick... and Josh? Gentlemen, Well Done, Well Done!!! I really admire and like what all of you are doing! Ever Forward, Forward Forever!!!
Hope we see more "how to sound like" videos, this alot of fun. Also I gotta give it to Nick, he's super good and I love what he's been doing with the Violet lately. Hope he keeps it on the board when he become famous!
I’d to hear the whole song without commentary, please ? Nick is awesome. I’ve not listened to a lot of Radiohead ( but I’ll change that now)so I’m a not good judge.
Don't Delete! I'll comment twice. Talent+Work=Genius. Nick's "Thing" as you said is like really comfortable while blazing a path of discovery. So rare and inviting to watch and launch our viewer efforts at crafting and reaching for favorite tones. T+W=G infused into a company's culture... now that is a truly fine value. You like Boss? I do as well, they are on my board with your pedals. You host and augment Nick's excellent work like a frame around a painting. Both are better in total for the viewer. Here's my idea... I need three channels at this point. Motorcycle, Music, Food. Then number four... What to do when we find our self beyond 70 and still active, filled with a child's sense of wonder? That's likely a penultimate adventure to see what God drops on my plate next. See you guys around.
The thing I love most about Radiohead is if you’re gonna try to sound like them, the first and most obvious question is WHICH Radiohead are you talking about. Every one of their albums have a totally unique sound and vibe, more so than most any other band. The bends, kid a, in rainbows, king of limbs, moonshaped pool, each of their albums sound so different from one another. Lots of bands grow beyond themselves and express their growth by dramatically changing their sound or redefining their artistic tone, like Metallica and the black album or the Beatles and the white album. But Radiohead does this and is practically a totally different band on every one of their albums. The most obvious and well known example of this radical shift is Kid A, but i think the clearest demonstration of this is A Moon Shaped Pool. That album so clearly has a cohesive tone and vibe that is so unique it’s practically its on genre. Like most of radioheads albums, it took awhile for me to get it and longer to really like. But now over 8 years later AMSP is my favorite of their albums. Super cool band but I feel like their music goes over most people’s head. So much so they occupy the same space as bob Dylan in that sneaking them into a party playlist is a guaranteed revocation of your song choosing privileges. At least in my experience.
The Colin bass sound being dirty is such a good detail to catch. He's definitely in the category of swampy murky sounds played with remarkable precision in a dense arrangement that puts him in the same category as Jamerson and Palladino (but not just comparing to these giants for fun, actually possessing similarities)
Nick is awesome! So talented and charismatic. As for Radiohead (especially York and Greenwood), I think they're contemporary composers : their hability to explore musical theories without letting it be to hermetic is phenomenal!
Love this! I've always said my favourite guitarist is 'Radiohead' - you can't really seperate them out as seperate guitarists as its the way they work together that creates the magic.
Keef is the reason I am here. (5 watt) I love all music. I can do EDM and Classical on the same day for good reason. EDM can keep awake for hours. Classical is chill in heavy traffic. I am a driver. So. You are literally keeping our highways safer. TY for making 'merica great.

Nick did an excellent job! I listen to Radiohead and Stephen Wilson Jr. almost daily. My two favorites right now. Thom is touring solo in Australia, New Zealand, and Asia, right now. I hope he comes to the States next year.

Then, I put on some Joe Walsh to restore my mood. Thanks but no thanks to this or How Sound Like REM or How To Sound Like The Tragically Hip.
I think we need to take a moment to acknowledge how talented Nick truly is.

if they had any sense they'd change the name of the whole site to LouxTube tbh
