Some people in the comments are confused, you can get it for coal by buying a mimel/malta or higher and trading it for Johan. So you can get a doubloon ship for coal.

I love the Karl XIV Johan, very adaptable. I really only play Asymmetric Battles these days , when WOWS is running it. It is the only mode that I enjoy these days and it is great in those.
Honestly I've been having a blast in my Karl XIV Johan, the secondaries just kind of work, the torpedoes are funny, and I've pulled an average of around 100k damage out of her so far. Sure she has weaknesses, but almost every weakness she has is shared by almost every other T9/10 ship. 32mm overmatch is going to screw over basically everything. The low AP pen can be accounted for, and only really seems to apply to outside of around 10km. Seeing as I play a lot of and enjoy Odin I'm kind of already used to how those 305s work, only at least Karl can load the HE and still deal some damage if needed.
Basically I'd say trade a coal ship for her, Forest Sherman is the cheapest to replace of the T10 ships, making her the best value to trade in if you have her. I traded mine in because I simply don't play it very often so it didn't make sense to keep her around, cemented even more by how fun Karl is to play. She can't play from range, but she has the concealment to push up, and her secondaries while not the most accurate can turn the tide in the early game DD engagement giving your team a massive advantage early on.
The speed of the torps and the ability to stealth torp almost 3KM is so underrated. You can fire them safely (bad torp angles) while undetected and by the time you get detected, the torps are almost on top of the target and that can open up better broadside opportunities are enemies evade.
I already did this. Funny that your doing the video on it. It is like having a more durable scheiflien with good aa, long range torps. The secondaries don't pen as much. But I do run full secondary build due to the increased aa. I've actually been enjoying it even though I don't do as much damage as my Jean Bart.

I played this Ship already for about 240 games and the best way to play it with a full secondary build. All 3 parts of the weaponry are pretty equal (according to my kills on the statistic page). Bow tanking and kiting are really good, especially bow tanking, because the secondaries already fire at 5°.
BUT never make the mistake to open up over 30°, because you want to launch your torps, while you are spotted. That is tempting, but not a good idea!
Win Rate is reasonable good (as a medium player), because you have a lot of impact on the game with this ship. AA is quite good, hydro is available and the concealment is unbeatable for a BB.
Downside: The main guns are like a shotgun and if you are used to 305s on cruisers or the Meckle, it is a bit disappointing. The range isn't so good either (when using full secondaries). Im averaging 30k less damage than on my Meckle.
The speed is also not amazing with a lil bit over 30 kts., but still ok.
As conclusion I'd say it is on par with the Rupprecht and a fun premium ship, when you like brawling and like playing close to the caps.
What mod do you use to see the sub direction when they ping?
I believe that even if it doesnt have the best accuracy (Standard secondary accuracy to be precise) the rate of fire on the secondaries put the effective hitting DPM to be actually fairly good

With silver/gold ranked being T8-9, that imo is the mode to go for to enjoy T9 ships.
I jumped at the chance to get rid of Hizen. Because Hizen was a dockyard ship she is considered rare, but she's still a PoS so Karl Johan is a major improvement. What I really like about her is her incredible stealth combined with the 13.5 km torps. You can refrain from using your guns a lot of the time and still be a threat until later game. She's more like a cruiser in that respect. I was really happy with this iteration of trade-ins from WG.

@@oneangrycanadian6205 Its funny, for every person who posts about not liking a ship or it being bad you have at least one person who has the opposite take. The fact is, like almost every ship in this game, the Hizen is both good and bad at the same time. Just depends on the tastes of the person.

I traded Moskva for this ship and it's soooo fun! I don't play Moskva anymore so, I think it's worth it.
I did the same and since moskva is a coal ship it's much easier to get back if I do want it again

Pro tip. Change default to "By name" or you may not see Moskva to trade.

I taded in a ship i got for coal for the Florida.....and my god am i glad i did! The Florida is exactly the tier 7 BB i was looking for. Its like the Duke of York but with much better accuracy. I love it.
The exact same case with me. Duke of York is crap worse than the tech-line KGV, Florida is second to none

@@bradenhagen7977You can trade Agir, Pommern or Kearsage for Florida. Direct swap, no doubloons needed. You may well be able to trade others, but I only have those three at Tier 9 to be able to say for definite.

I think you were getting focused on because of that fancy Camo. When I see a ship like that it's just to fun to give it a makeover.
I traded in Khaba which I played maybe 20 times since 2016 for this one. I'm sure it'll get way more use.

Is a secondary build really the meta build? No improved dispersion, no improved reload.
This ship is really like a glass cannon, the problem is the cannon whimpers out and misses almost everything. Even with 10k hp doesn't do it.
I traded in my Tier IX Hizen (which I never played) for the Karl Johan and I´m very happy with the trade. I had been waiting for it to come back as a coal ship as it was rumored, but I´m glad it came back this way after 8 months. Now I have a bunch of coal that I don´t know what to do with LOL.
Wasn't the Hizen a Dockyard ship? Unless they do one of those horrible auctions, there's no way to actually get that back.....

I was considering trading Marco Polo for this one... I may just keep it... I don't like that they don't give you much for the trade in, but it's better than having a ship you don't like playing.
Karl is soooo fun. ridiculous concealment, crazy torps, fire starter quick reload guns and short range but highly effective secondaries

Question - on the first game when you rush the Wis. Why didn't you used your Right Torp and why no ram him instead of trying the pass by ?
PQ would rather die than ram. He thinks it is lame. There was an island to his left, he could not turn left to use his right side without grounding broadside with the Wisconsin bow in.
@@papasmurf6423 I don't see the point as he is so low HP that in "any case" he dies. So there is no lame to ram and take one of the enemy with you. For the right torp it looks like there was an opportunity to use it forcing the Wis to react to try to dodge ... One way or the other, i think that the purpose was to show the tankiness of the ship rather and I have the impression that there was a little bit too much commitment.
He could've torped when he first began the engagement. He probably had a reason for not torping. Thought the Wisconsin was just going to duck behind the island or something.
Again, PQ would rather die in a knife fight than ram. He thinks ramming is lame. He hates it when other players try to ram him. He won't ram. Even if it is the best decision he can make. He doesn't care. He won't ram. It is a principles thing for him.

Same, traded a Khaba plus gold since I had 5 games in that ship since I got it. Well worth the trade.
Traded my Khaba I never played for this (before watching this video) and I agree fully with it. Fun ship that but she is hurt badly by this game terrible 2 tier uptiering. That will never change, WG has zero interest in ever doing that). I see her being very good for mission farming, especially kills, with the torps. I'd be interested in trying a brawl or ranked game with her though, that close in brawling would be interesting.
I took the typical gun build for my first time out but I now want to try the brawling secondary build.
Any opinion on the Yudachi? I got a Mainz and Mainz B so I would like to sell the Mainz, but the selection of ships to trade it with is rather poor
It's bad, even after the buff. Got her from some Santa container, and it's hot garbage.
She's just an alternate version of the tech tree DD. Has longer torp range but slower firing guns, any other differences are very minor. Might be worth grabbing if you like collecting rare ships, 'cause she's not available normally, but otherwise it's nothing special.
@@muffinswasshoi3731 the torps are horrendously slow with bad concealment, and it has torpedo reload booster in separate slot. Things worth mentioning.
I think she's decent since the buff, but you're unlikely to get consistent results in it.
Get it if you love IJN torp boats and want a premium T7 one. It's probably equally as good as Shiratsuyu.
I got the Yudachi, and really like it. Really good torpedo boat.
there are certain ship i pretty much only play in small brawls or ranked, and this ship falls in that catagory.
I like the Johan, it is not fun when in T10+ randoms though. It is fun when grinding stuff in coop. Yep only consider coal ships as you can get them back. For about 7 dollars I traded in Malta and Immelman, as I never play carriers. Got Flint and Minegumo. I have no regerts. Not even one letter.
Yup, traded in a CV I got in Santa drops I never play and a coal ship. Unfortunately everything else I play with, or use for niche games.

Well, I had Jean Bart and Jean Bart B, so I traded one of them for this one to have more variety. So far so good.
I traded the F. Sherman for it and then rebought the Sherman with the coal coupon. Been wanting this ship.
There's also a small balance of dubs to spend when trading a ship like Sherman against this, right? That is how it looks on my end.

The best T9 BB in the game even counting something like Musashi. Hydro, best BB torps in the game, good secondaries, solid guns counting good HE, great concealment, pretty good armor. I still cant believe they basically give away this OP ship in trade in. Whats the reason?

I exchanged Sherman for Karl, and the same time I spend coal to get back Sherman to my collection. 😁 I spend also one of my 2 Atlantas for Dupleix. The rest availible good ships I already have.

I traded Forrest Sherman for it. I had a bunch of coal and nothing interesting to get with it, so I used it to get Forrest Sherman back. If you do this it takes a few minutes for the game to realize you traded the ship away and to allow you to purchase it for coal again.

I traded my Max Immelmann (she was dusting for over than 2 years in port) for San Diego and man, i love it, after 20 games my average is almost 90k

2) Use Radar to kill T10/11 DD in cap early

I’d say Karl is a funny BB, CA concealment with an Ostergotland strapped at each side… tankier than I expected…

Yes, they can be knocked out permanently. Very easily on a BB

If you have say the Salem, you can trade it in for the the Karl. Pay your 1,650 Doubloons and you have the Karl. You will be able to repurchase the Salem for coal in the Armory after you do so. I had to restart the game for this to work. But... if you have a ton of Coal. Go nuts....
In this patch, should I trade my GK for this?
If you don't really play GK and really want this ship then it is yes
Since GK is a coal ship you can still get it back in the future

Yeah, T9 is rough. You get put in T10 games more often than you don’t. The only cruisers and BBs that T9 is okay for are ships that are over-tuned for their tier. Alaska, Musashi, Kearsarge, etc.
The DDs are good in T9 as long as there is no CV. Preferably one that has a strong gimmick. Mogodor is still insane for a T9 ship tech tree ship. You’ll be fine in T10 mm and you get to maul everything if you happen to get into a T7-9 match.

You can always get coal ships back (for free) and even ships you don't play still give you snowflakes, etc.
I traded Immelman for it about 15 minutes that I saw it active...... was a no brainer... seeing as I could buy Immelman with coal right back.

Took Karl and Dlian against asashio and khaba, did not play those at all, and for about 10EUR 2x tier 9 prems is good deal in my book
I had 340k coal , I have trade Salem for Brandenburg as I needed T8 option for Lutjens (21p), I have Bismark , and GK,Pommren, + Scharnie 43 ,and my Lutens is on Schlieffen so is annoyng when I need to spend 300k com xp every time I need to use it on T8 , that made sense for me , and my second deal was F.Sherman for Karl Johan , I need to save 140k coal to buy back her , but it was worth it , I have played few games on her with Swirski on board and torp build that is perfect match , dont regret that deal.
I was considering doing the same thing! ( Salem-Brandenburg ) How is the Brandenburg? Do you feel its worth the salem? I want the Karl johan but need 1700 dubs to trade Salem for it which i dont have. I love German BBs so I may still do it.
@@GeorgeAnzelon I have traided Salem and after trade I almost got hear attack as in armory there was no option to buy back Salem , only after I have restarted game that option have returned :) , and about Brandenburg , she have 10k less hp that Bismark & Tirpiz , and have decent secondaries , I could just buy that ship , but I am F2P player and after all WG scams I refuse to spend cash on game , I vote with my wallet , Salem is worth much more and in better ship that Brandenburg , for me that trade was worth it , oh tho I will only play her in T8 stuff (brawl,operations) , if you have few ships that no is not woth to trade Salem , she is great for making some mission that WG throw quickly , like start fire , or cita by cruiser , I would rather save coal and get Pommren she have alo torps but also hydro and is T9 so earn more credits .

It does not have quarter pen.... the secondarys are barely penning DDs. You could just as well build a French ship for secondarys
They do pen superstructures, and decent with fires. Given how much you shoot HE with main guns, and have good chance with floods, it's good enough. Although, I had not tried the secondary build yet.

I traded my Khabarovsk for the Karl, since I never really play Khaba. I'm not super impressed by Karl, but it'll definitely see more use than Khaba.
Talking of weapons being destroyed, I had a turret and a set of torps destroyed in one gaming session. That's the first time I have permanently lost a weapon on a ship, it's not fun.
Not happened in years, but I have permanently lost both main gun turrets on Dunkerque multiple times before.
I trade my s Sherman because it’s the cheapest tier ten coal ship for Karl John but it was worth it

I traded GK for Karl, because I dont play GK and I got it for free. Also I traded another free ship I got, Khabarovsk, for Minegumo and I paid with dubloons I got for free from a friend's bonus that I invited into the game. So 0 money spent in this trade-in event

You're wrong about how to build and play this thing. It can stealth torp something virtually no other BBs can't do. You need to upgrade your turning so it can spam torps and then stay out of sight range. The main guns are secondary weapons to be used mostly against cruisers and destroyers. You're playing it like a normal battleship, firing the guns which eliminates your stealth. A standard BB is not what it is, it has more in common with a stealth cruiser.

This ships rely too much on the gimmicky torps and knowing the fact that your torp tubes have randomized HP and might born poor, I don't think this ship worth it, imagine a single Conq, Vincent or Thunderer salvo pernamently broke all your torp tubes and now your gimmick is gone and all you have left is a gimped Rupprecht
