  • Shimano have just released new 12-speed versions of their mechanical GRX gravel groupset. There are lots of gearing variations, with the new 12-speed GRX line-up aiming to give options for all different kinds of gravel cycling. Alex takes an in-depth look at what’s new, taking the RX820 for a ride, as well as running through the specs of the cheaper RX610 groupset.

I would like 42 in front and 10-51 behind with 44 mm graveltyres. 40 + 11-42 is what I have and it is covering everything important, but I could be happy with one more gear in both ends. 40- 42 is average 7,5 km/t when going as easy as I can in long (30 minute)8% climbs.

I switched my Genesis Croix De Fer over to GRX during lock down and have a real mix and match across the different sets Shimano had on offer then. It would be interesting to understand what i would be able to switch out / change to now etc - I have a 2x 600 series chain ring, 46/30, a 105 road cassette 11-34, the 800 series rear derailleur with clutch, 800 series shifters and front disc caliper with XT rotors. My rear caliper is a 105 one to work with the frame mounting.... so a real mix, but it works really well

This is a great move from Shimano. Kinda what I was saying about their 1x GRX options from the start: they should try match SRAMs wider range or use more MTB bits (which is why I run my 1x11 GRX with a SRAM 10-42t instead of the original Shimano 11-42t for more range). So, if you currently have 1x11 GRX on your bike, can you just change your RH lever and other 12-speed specific bits (and microspline), or will your levers then not match and you'll have to buy a new LH lever too else it'll look/feel weird? I already have a LH lever for the dropper/brakes. And I presume the old GRX in-line hydraulic sub-brake levers are still compatible? If you can do just a partial groupset upgrade at some point that makes the upgrade price more appealing. 🤓

@@matthewshultz8762 Yeah I presume the fact they describe the new levers as being designed for flared bars, but no previous mention on the 11 speed means I'd have to cough up an extra £250 (or whatever it is) for a new left hand dropper lever I don't really need, just to match a new right.

When I was buying my latest mountain bike (2nd hand), I originally wanted Sram AXS electronic shifting. In the end I found a good value bike equipped with Shimano XTR M9100 and honestly, the groupset is so well made and refined it really doesn't need to be electric. For riding on road, the shifter might feel a little too stiff as you are shifting a lot because of the jumps between the gears, but I can't notice any flaw off-road. I guess with the STI levers this only 'complaint' would be also eliminated. The Hyperglide+ is just that good if you have a high end lever (on the MTB side XT at least, SLX is way too clumsy and the feel is nowhere near as good).

For that specific setup, you would need wheels/hub with Microspline freehub support. Your existing road wheels most likely came with a HG freehub. But other than that, you shouldn't have any issues with converting a road bike to a 10-45 1x setup.

It's a nice setup, but if I would build a road bike again now, I'd probably go 2x Di2, sometimes I would like to have a bit smaller gaps between the gears, and the Di2 Shifters just looks so much nicer.

I think 12 speed with that 10 cog behind can increase descending 3% speed from 30 mph to 33 mph, allowing more power pedalling. Less descent it will not help me , because 11-40 is hard enough, more descent it will not help, because then I dont pedal anymore anyway. But I am tempted. It will convert the gravelbike to a combi- gravel-roadbike, putting the roadbike further away in my shed. The roadbike has several flaws. It cant go with fatter tyres than 26 mm, and the big cog on the cassette is only 25 teeth. And it doesnt have any suspension, and no dropperpost. Actually it is worse than gravelbike in sections of almost every journey, when the going gets rough. But it is a true pleasure going between 5% downhill and 5% uphill on good tarmac.

Depends on what you want to keep and how big you want to go in the back. Other manufactures do HG compatible 12 speed 11-50,51,and 52 that means you could keep your wheels/hubs but loose the 10 tooth*, Left hand lever and (likely) both brake calipers will be fine if you can find just an OEM lever for sale. Chainset should be fine and the cranks look like the same BCD so at worst it would just be a new chainring. IF (and its a big fat IF) Shimano have used the same pull ratio you might be able to use your existing rear mech with a Wolftooth link or an aftermarket cage, might seem unlikely but they do have previous for this, Tiagra 4700 and GRX 400 rear mechs work fine with 11 speed 105 and above shifters (although you wont find it on any official compatibility charts).
*If you really want the 10t (or even a 9!) don't forget Srams XD and XDR has been sub 11t for a while and you might be more likely to find an XD/XDR driver for your wheelset, defiantly worth looking into and weighing up the pros/cons before you go buying wheels or having new hubs laced.

Why keep the HG body? What does it offer compared to the micro spline? (yes backwards compatibility for old wheelsets, but now if you want to go from 1x GRX to 2x, you need new wheels or at least a new freehub body if available) With micro spline you could still keep 11-xx cassettes but also offer (narrow) 10-xx cassettes and thus make life a bit easier for those who want a shimano road 1x setup (even though shimano doesn't offer a 1x chrankset, it's still something people want)
