Is that near Perranuthnoe (sp?) by any chance? I stayed there 14 years ago and used to hike up and down the coast trail nearly a dozen times, and can still remember that in the middle of a meadow along the path there was a depression and once you got closer you could clearly see a vertical shaft which was fenced off. Whether the shaft was part of a cave or part of a mine I don't know, but I do remember that it went down to sea level where the exit of the mine shaft or cave was.
