Killing Caterpillars with BT - BIOLOGICAL WARFARE! || Black Gumbo

  • When caterpillars show up in your garden, you must move quickly. Caterpillars can decimate a crop in a matter of days or even hours. At the first sign of caterpillar infestation, you must get rid of them quickly. I have found that BT is the best solution for these soft chewing monsters. BT stands for Bacillus thuringiensis, and works When the caterpillar ingests the bacteria. This bacteria causes the digestive system of the caterpillar to fail, and the caterpillar dies. I'll show you how to mix and apply this organic and safe solution. I'll also show you a failure, so that you can learn from my mistakes.

    To overcome the short shelf life of BT I bought it in powered form from Seven Springs. It works just as well as the liquid form, and I think it is easier to handle too. Best of all, no more wasting of product throwing it away each year! Be sure to run fresh water through your sprayer after you use BT so you won't have the awful smell of dead bacteria in it. ;)

    something else to keep in mind along with storage. BT degradates fairly quick in sunlight even more so the higher the UV index.i always get more bang for my buck when i apply real early of a morning or near dusk. i seem to get better results with a late evening application honestly

      Yeah, I put the second application on as the sun was going down, hope that gives the BT a better chance of wreaking havoc.

    I had a bottle of Monterey BT from 2019. I didn't think it'd work but saw a lady online who says she uses the same bottle for years on her squash vine borers. So, last year, 2023, I used it on my zucchini plants, in the stems. It killed the vine borers just fine. So the shelf life was fine. But I kept it in my basement which stays reasonably cool. Anyway, I have a fresh bottle arriving tomorrow so I'll use the new stuff. HORRIBLE gypsy moth caterpillar infestation in PA this year. All the tree leaves are eaten to shreds. Trying to protect our pines and apple trees.

    From what I understand of the product. It does not kill on contact. It need to ingest them and starve itself to death.
    Best to look for a powder from and mix as you go for a longer shelf life!

    My okra has been eaten up by green grasshoppers. I added a little solar water fountain feature I made because the heat was so hard on the birds this year. I set it up near the okra not thinking about the grasshoppers. Those grasshoppers are gone and the birds come for water every day. It's so easy for us to forget how nature can solve many of our garden problems all by itself with just a little help from our friends. My okra looks great! It's kind of like when we are looking for something we put away in an unknown place and while we are looking for it, we find something else we've been looking for for years.

    Caterpillars: spray weeks before the June spawning season.
    Don't play games, spray in late may early June. Why risk a bountiful harvest for a 5 minute application per plant?

    • @drago6576
      @drago6576 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I put out a Japanese beetle trap out every year. (Set it up away from your plants... i.e. opposite direction because the traps that use pheromones actually attract the little beasts.) It's amazing how many I catch every year. I have hibiscus as well as my regular veggies I have to protect. In my case, the trap is at the side of the house (no plants there) and my flowers are at the front and the back of the house. Works really well.

Usually, the wasps lay eggs on them, but I can't wait while they eat away the whole tomato plant in a matter of minutes. So I'll try to grab a small bottle of this to have on hand for the month ahead.

    • @ScottHead
      @ScottHead  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes, it will kill vine borers if you can get them to ingest it. That's the trick. Once they are in the stem its hard to get to them. Some people inject BT solution into the stems of their squash plants. That's one method I've heard of.

    • @johndyer9232
      @johndyer9232 2 ปีที่แล้ว
