I can't seem to get chapters to work for some reason, so timestamps are at the top of the description! Also mild corrections: -Free Step Dodge Cancel was not the inspiration for the FSD name, it was a reference to dodging attacks with a Free Step. -The Age meter has no effect on the jiggle physics, that was just an urban legend that got accepted as fact. The only use it has ever had was unlocking the alternate opening for OG DOA2 -The DOA/Melty overlap entry was really dumb looking back -I've seen quite a few "This got me interested in DOA" comments since this video's release so I'd like to also link another Discord other than the FSD one, if you're looking for matches this is probably the best one out there: discord.gg/4Sha8GnHcQ
For ninjas to have only single name is nothing weird since they're shadowy operatives and their names are more like codenames. Ryu is a leader so he's an exception or maybe his full name is something like "Ryu of The Hayabusa Clan". In that case "Kasumi of Tenjinmon Sect of Mugen-Tenshin Clan" is more fitting (but mouthful) full name.
It’s funny that Mortal Kombat players defended a spinoff game from another company; I usually see the opposite situation when fans of similar games quarrel among themselves about whose game is better or worse.
DoA online was basically the only way for a PC-gamer to experience more or less modern 3D fighting games at the time. I remember navigating those chinese menus, dang it, but it was worth it
About the negative guard break thing; in KOF14, there's a character named Nelson that has a move that guard breaks. It's safe if it does, but it's actually unsafe on HIT, making for an interesting layer in his offense. Kinda reminded me of that
I was expecting a mention of Honoka looking like Honoka from the Love Live series, i actually thought she was kind of a reference tbh. I loved the video!!!
The DOA franchise means so much to me ever since I was young, I grew up with it a lot and it sucks to see it dying slowly. I just hope we can keep it alive as long as possible.
Wow my first time playing DOA WAS I Japan when I was 11 and I played DOA2 in an arcade.. I fell in love with Ayane. I've been a fan since then but it's wild how much information you have after having playing the game from 5 onward.... Like wow I shoulda done videos like this years and years ago. Thanks for giving me an education on a game I've loved for over 10 years
that final shi sounds like a creppypasta, where do you got it from? its made by you? cus it is really good, also, i loved the video man, this comunity is tiny but is the best comunity.
Really? I always felt like the Xbox crossovers were a bit canon... then you play Killer Instinct and realize Halo is connected to KI..... incredible.. hope they make DoA/Ninja Gaiden canon. Would be lovely.
@@mangelangel2570dead or alive and Ninja Gaiden are Cannon because they crossover a lot with Hayabusa and Kasumi and ayane being in each other's games and from what I understand Ninja Gaiden takes place between the Dead or Alive games
I don't think I've ever watched one of these iceberg videos, despite the frequency they appear, but as a fan of DOA and your content, I'm naturally intrigued. Interesting to hear that you started out with Last Round, was the also specifically thanks to the free-to-play Core Fighters? I started out with Dead or Alive 4 at Christmas 2005. 1:01 - Interesting to see the Core Values incident be a part of the "Basics" section. Is it really one of the most well known incidents/facts about the franchise? 1:55 - I was curious as to who this character was, popping up in my DOA game. I've only played one Ninja Gaiden game and my opinions were... mixed. 4:07 - It's kind of hilarious that the jiggle physics of Dead or Alive 1 was a major part of what spread word about the game when there was only 3 female fighters. Given the emphasis put of the feature, you would have thought they'd have more females to demonstrate it. 4:44 - I feel this incident and statement gains further notoriety when you add in how, not too long after, one of the co-founders of EVO got kicked out because of harassment. The irony was hilarious. 7:42 - It wasn't exactly the most accurate movie but I had a good time to watching it. Any moment with Bass in it was a delight. 9:25 - I believe there was consideration for having Samus be a playable guest fighter but I remember some comment about wanting to keep Dimensions as a pure DOA experience or something. Regardless, a missed opportunity. 11:28 - I've been interested in trying to find some more DOA content creators (one of them I've been watching is planning to move away from DOA, so this screen here is pretty handy). 12:27 - I've never heard of this scrapped DOA content. DOATEC attacking the Ninja village would have been a cool development and the death of Kokoro's mother could have resulted in Kokoro siding with DOATEC (which given the villain side lacks fighters, would be something I approve of). 15:15 - I've seen some of the footage of Nikkei... I certainly would like to see DOA character's depicted in that style. 18:56 - I've heard plenty about Code Chronos but Project Progressive I think I've only heard mentioned once, an not in much detail. 20:23: Happy to see PangYa get a mention. Kasumi looks great in the game, surprising it's just a costume rather than a full character here. The Kasumi and Ryu artwork from the game is loved by me that I've used it twice in thumbnails. 20:42 - The high quality promo art is appreciated. Kokoro and Hitomi look beautiful in it and it's nice to see Kasumi centre stage given how often she gets pushed aside (an not just by the more recent Marie Rose and Honoka, she's previously been pushed aside by Ayane and Hitomi for both promotions and crossover events). 24:54 - Surprising that Team Ninja never revisited this idea. A belly dancer fighter seems like a natural fit for the series. 27:33 - That's a strange overlap. I figured if an overlap would occur it would be with another 3D fighter like Soulcalibur (gosh, we need more 3D fighting games... I miss Bloody Roar). 29:46 - Okay, I loved this entire line and it makes the existence of Dead or Alive Xtreme even better. It's kind of ironic how the perception has played out, given the Xtreme series was made to allow the sex appeal aspect to flourish outside of the main series so it could focus more on the fighting side of things. I for one don't mind the existence of the Xtreme series, at least when it focuses on the Volleyball. It's when they make entries such as the PSP Paradise game which ditches the sport aspect where I question it's existence. 34:46 - That's not too surprising, Kasumi did have a school outfit as an unlockable from the very beginning. Strange though that neither her nor Ayane designs, even in the first games, seemed 16 (Kokoro and Eliot I could see being those ages back in DOA4) so it just seems to be Japan's fixation on keeping the female characters particularly young. With the time passing from Dead or Alive to Dead or Alive 4, with an estimated year passing between each game, Kasumi should have at least been 18 or older by the 2nd or 3rd DOA. 37:19 - Wouldn't Phase 4 make more sense as the Princess of Darkness in this scenario? A fun interpretation though and I like the dedication to the presentation here. 39:45 - That would actually be a pretty cool twist. Something similar was done with Senran Kagura: Peach Beach Splash, though this makes the owner sound more mystical and menacing.
For some of the content creators I can plug link and give a brief from the ones I know starting from top to left. I like a lot of them and definitely recommend to keep DOA alive. 1) Emery Reigns - Emery is the main one for DOA publicity and does DOA streaming from time to time. The most popular one. really awesome iceberg video! Also I thought it was just me getting annoyed by the amoeba guy 😆 I've been making DOA modding videos since 2008 and I'm still here 😱 I'm currently working on DOA2 custom stages with the help of others who are making SEGA Naomi/DC model import/export tools. I really want to see how much I can push the Dreamcast with textures and polygons.
Dude... I remember having the DoA 2 Dreamcast disc, and if you put it in your PC, there's image files of all the girl characters in bikinis. Had a little more fun with that feature than I should have... but yeah, being 13 and all... stuff happens😏
Great iceberg video!! I’ve been a longtime casual fan of the series, so it was nice to learn so many new things! Maybe not the thing about Marie Rose in Stage 6 though 😭
Yeah the last tier was supposed to be absurd, but looking back I definitely went a bit overboard with it... But yeah, I do believe the series still has a future, especially considering fighting games with even smaller playerbases than DOA have managed to come back from being dormant like this 🙏
That exclusivity was thanks to Itagaki who was very vocal about wanting to optimize his game for the console with more powerful hardware. He preferred Xbox so much that when it came to Temco wanting to port or make anything for PS, wither it be DOA or NG, he wanted nothing to do with it. He didn't care that Sony's consoles would sell more in Japan than MS's, and yet his games still went on to sell millions of copies with the Xbox exclusivity (both DOA3 and NG did). Just going off of memory here, so if anyone has the facts, feel free to correct me (or back me up, lol). So once Itagaki left Tecmo, there was no one who felt as strongly as him to fight for something like optimizing the game for the strongest console hardware (which is consistently still MS's consoles). I think even before Xbox, he preferred to develop for Saturn and DC rather than PS.
I remember playing KOF Maximum Impact 1 & 2 and checking the move list, there was a move list called DOA Thrashing, I always wonder if this was related somehow with DOA 😂
I never knew about the belly dancer character. I would love to see her playable someday… I also did not know Venus Vacation was not canon I thought it was? Good iceberg so far.
I might include this in a follow up video, but apparently that was just a rumor that was accepted as fact; the only thing the Age meter effects is the intro in DOA2
So is miako dead tho???? Because she is "missing" in doa 6 and hasn't been around kokoro in years. I believe that the of doa 5 story still kinda stands just not during the game
If you mean the fanfare, that's the stage clear/victory theme from DOA1 If you mean the song playing throughout that tier, that's "Hitohita (DW SW Mix)", a remix of Kasumi's DOA2 theme from Warriors Orochi 3 Ultimate
Cool vid, but stopped watching once you put on the voice filter. Kinda annoying to listen to and not the most effective way of conveying info to put it mildly :/
Understandable, I've noticed that the voice/final tier has easily been the most divisive part of the video for people. If it means anything that was the joke/conspiracy tier so you didn't miss any real info.
_DOA_ is *still* the best fighting game movie, by far - and don’t forget Jaime Presley, Devon Aoki (of Sin City fame), or Eric Roberts. It was incredibly well produced.
The only thing I have to say is there isn't anything "deep" really. I already knew nearly all the stuff on this and the things I didn't is just highly personal to you. The community pages are big "who cares", besides it isn't shocking. A person that plays one fighter, most likely, plays two or three-- a lot of the player base for Dragon Ball Z Fighters also play MVC games, so is there a lore deep dive overlap? Just silly. You are aware that developers/ directors don't need corporate permission to make deals amongst each other, right? Just because one character is seen in another game (in house) doesn't mean the company is on fine terms with that character (or even series). It just means that either the two directors [teams] are friends, or one thought the other would help bring in sales. I believe the tournament only happened twice (maybe thrice), and it wasn't "officially" announced-- the DOA team did the lion share of the marketing. The treatment of DOA compared to Temco's other titles can easily lead one to believe, DOA isn't appreciated. Especially since Temco doesn't really back the spin-off games, but turn to DOA when they are in the red. I get the feeling that you are trying to reject aspects, about the game, that's been there since the first arcade. You are aware that the sexuality of the characters is a joke, right? The juggles are there because the creator thought it was funny-- nothing else. In the future, when there is sexuality within the topic, just talk about it and move on. Keep your game journalist impression to yourself. Using back-handed comments, false virtue signaling, and innuendoes just makes me raise the eyebrow to you. If you don't like it, then don't talk about it. Well, if you ever make another Iceberg, then hopefully you get some better stuff or drop the soy-boy act.
Yeah I admit stuff like the "DOA/Melty Community Overlap" entry were an odd inclusion looking back, not only was it mostly personal to me as you said, but that "overlap" specifically was probably just because the game was new at the time I noticed it. It wasn't my intention to make it seem like I was rejecting aspects of the series; while it does get annoying hearing people reduce it to "the boob game", it's ultimately something I accept and can appreciate about the franchise, even if I joke about it sometimes like in this vid. Overall, thanks for the criticisms 🙏 While I'd say I'm proud of this video for the most part, there's a lot of things I'd change about it looking back.
Collaboration requires money to purchase license for collab IP. Yes connection between directors indeed make collab easier to happen, but the suits guys that hold the budget money, not the game director. So the company still indirectly affect for collab to happen. Sorry for bad english, hope my point can pass through.
@@NorlandKalgara not from in-house ip. Unless you mean man-power. There isn't an increase of budget when putting Donkey Kong in a Mario game, nor is there an increase when SNK place a random Metal Slug character in a King of Fighters. The only possiblity, for your argument, is for the parent company to take an ip from a child company and license it to themselves. Like Squarenix and Taiyo, or Nintendo and Lab studios, but the argument is shakey because the increase could only really come if the child company was not made by parent but bought, and ip belong to the child prior. Even then it depends on if the child company former owner is there and on good terms with the parent [ex. Lab Studios, Gamefreak, Clover Studios, Platinum, and Enix]. To end: license buy outs is usually done by different companies. It doesn't make sense to charge yourself more money to use your own stuff, and the past has shown, when such a scenario is displayed, the parent just muscle the license in court and contract-- look at Microsoft and Rare.

Yeah the last tier was supposed to be absurd, but looking back I definitely went a bit overboard with it...
But yeah, I do believe the series still has a future, especially considering fighting games with even smaller playerbases than DOA have managed to come back from being dormant like this 🙏
it used to be xbox exclusive but it somehow lost contract with microsoft
I think even before Xbox, he preferred to develop for Saturn and DC rather than PS.
he not a sony guy the other issue is xbox don't sell in japan@@zhizn_snake
I’m I that one guy as a injustice fan overlapped to dead or alive cause I never heard of melty blood or played it but looks interesting
Robotguy
I remember playing KOF Maximum Impact 1 & 2 and checking the move list, there was a move list called DOA Thrashing, I always wonder if this was related somehow with DOA 😂
The last part is hilarious great video!
17:00 I remember playing the AOT stage in DOA5LR on a cracked pc port
I never knew about the belly dancer character. I would love to see her playable someday… I also did not know Venus Vacation was not canon I thought it was? Good iceberg so far.
Always put your age at 99
I might include this in a follow up video, but apparently that was just a rumor that was accepted as fact; the only thing the Age meter effects is the intro in DOA2
Nice video 😊
I stopped playing after 5 came out since it kinda fell off. I wish DoA7 would change that but I'm not holding my breath.
This is a great video, that is making me want to get into DOA, is there an OST list for each section
Definitely recommend trying it out, you have nothing to lose from giving Core Fighters a shot!
OST list:
-Hitohira (DW SW Mix) - Warriors Orochi 3 Ultimate
-Bloody Nocturne (Marie Rose theme) - DOA5
-No Money (Zack theme) - DOA1
-Read My Mind Baby - DOA Xtreme Venus Vacation
-Ayane theme - DOA++
-For Your Existence - DOA6
-Karma (Omega/Genra theme) - DOA3
Thank you so much
This video was so freaking good❤

I still remember Itagaki’s DoA5 it would have been 100000000x better than what we got. Aye, we got the better muy tai fighter.
I love DOA
Death Or Alive
18:16 So we just gonna ignore the fact that Keith "Spawn" David lent his voice to xbox ?
Cool vid but I csnt watch that last tier. That voice changer got old really fast
31:17 WHY THE FUCK IS MAGGIE SIMPSON NUMBER 11?!

Hitomi has german roots and Buchfink is not a regular last name but it could be possible

So is miako dead tho???? Because she is "missing" in doa 6 and hasn't been around kokoro in years. I believe that the of doa 5 story still kinda stands just not during the game
31:10 JAKE?! MAGGIE!!?!?!?!?
great vid,im kinda new to DOA as whole but liked it a lot...but bro final stage was CORNIEST SHIT EVERR😭🙂
whats the music at 0:59
If you mean the fanfare, that's the stage clear/victory theme from DOA1
If you mean the song playing throughout that tier, that's "Hitohita (DW SW Mix)", a remix of Kasumi's DOA2 theme from Warriors Orochi 3 Ultimate
No shot ur video popped up 😭
You forgot to add how evo lost respect from the fgc and got roasted. Fuck evo and esports. DOA is Fighting game core values.
There is one collab/cameo you miss
it was Azur Lane

@@BeeLy1011 damn, now that just make me feel stupid bc of that lol 💀
To end:
license buy outs is usually done by different companies. It doesn't make sense to charge yourself more money to use your own stuff, and the past has shown, when such a scenario is displayed, the parent just muscle the license in court and contract-- look at Microsoft and Rare.
