      There's actually a funny scene in the books where a voltigeur comes across Rossendale's dying body. He steals Rossendale's trousers, then uses Rossendale's body to steady his musket so he can aim and fire it. Then Rossendale begs for death, and the voltigeur is like: "I can't do that, that would be rude!" before giving the man an affectionate pat on the shoulder and going back to rejoin his company.

      This attack is actually based on a record of a soldier's journal at Waterloo. In the soldier's journal they describes the courtyard, the attack, including the French breeching the gates and the British managing to close them again and even the little drummer boy. The soldier wrote that he hid the drummer boy in the farm house. Sparing his life.

      Although his uniform is incorrect, being as he was a Sous-Lieutenant, the mans name is Legros, which literally translates as "the large" and his nickname was "the smasher", he'd been a pioneer sergeant in the Grande Armee, but retired after Napoleons abdication in 1814, and was promoted on re-joining the colours in the hundred days in 1815. Much as is shown here, he managed to batter down the gates and with about 30 men enter the courtyard, Colonel MacDonald, who was the commander of the 2nd Coldstreams, led a number of officers, around the Frenchmen, and closed the gate from behind them, before turning on them, all 30 of them were wiped out, supposedly Legros had multiple shot and stab wounds, showing he didn't go easily, and as is shown here, only the drummer boy survived.

      Robert Wake I haven't watch this series yet, but historically Hougoumont was the first position to be attacked during the opening stage of the battle. The French pushed the Dutch light infantry back from the woods in front of Hougoumont, before their assault. They actually did breach the gate, but they were pushed back. Hougoumont was defended by the Coldstream Guards, while Le Haye Sainte was defended by the King's German Legion. From what I remember Hougoumont was assaulted only once, as a diversionary attack. while Le Haye Sainte was assaulted twice and fell on the second. Well that's what I remember from the top of my head.

    • @robertoshmerto8119
      @robertoshmerto8119 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I thought Hougoumont started off as a diversionary attack but eventually became a slogging match due to repeated attacks. Rest makes sense, didn't know about the gate breach though.
      As for the fact you haven't seen the series, I suggest you do, low budget but it's pretty enjoyable as are the books.
      Also, as an aside, I don't think Hougoumont is mentioned at all in the episode (been a while since I watched it all) hence my thinking that this was LHS as Prince of Orange orders Sharpe there to man the defences. So, logically, based on the dialogue in the episode, I took this to be LHS.

      It sounds French. The transcripts say that he says "A cette niche, Frogs!".
      "A cette niche" literally means 'to this niche', but it could also mean "to this hole". In english the meaning would be something like "go back to your hole" or, more simply, "get lost".
      Full disclosure: This is my best guess as I don't speak French.

      War is hell, skirmishers always aimed for officers and NCOs first.
      Since volley fire for line infantry was only the way to hit anything with muskets, they'd put a wall of lead down, musket balls do not discriminate in who they hit.
      They would aim for the front of the column to break the momentum and to keep dropping the front ranks, since a column can only fire from the front ranks.
      It's how the British broke columns before they could form into line.
