6:06 how they catch the new tempo together is absolutely insane
Normally I don't comment, but what I just saw is impossible to forget. It's nice to see young people pouring their soul into art.
These young men are like a young Quentin Tarantino directing Reservoir Dogs: So confident doing high level work as they had been in the business for long
YES YES YES YES YES
FINALLY a digitized performance. They blew me a way live..best supporting band I've seen in the past two years. It's like Fugazi meets Talking Heads meets Drive Like Jehu meets Duster but completely original. Appreciate that 2019 has some kids making music like this.
Totally agree. I hear some Slint and King Crimson as well. Definitely Fugazi too, good call.
Sounds like a fugazi of now to me
Yep these are the closest comparisons I've seen on this comment section Great ear
duster are so fucking good
Yes! And with the quiet/eerie parts of Slint
So I've watched this maybe, a 100 times at least. Not kidding. Always when it hits 22:59 I play back that drum fill at least 5 times. I mean If there was something like a Grammy's for drum-fills this one would've fucking taken it.
The people at KEXP deserve a Nobel Peace prize for capturing this performance
As a dude that that grew up in the 90s post hardcore/mathrock/noise scenes, it makes me so happy indeed to see some kids doing music like this FINALLY. Just goes to show cool skips a generation :P
Check out Girl Band's session.
Math rock was at it's peak between 2005-2011 I'd say now we're getting a well deserved revival
right what is this guy talking about 90s didnt even have much spazz rock, autzi rock, sevant rock, whatever you wanna call it.
@@olasmcc7266 the 90s had a lot of math rock too. Slint, hella, lightning bolt, capn jazz, and lots of others. The 90s were like the years that math rock was being crafted and then it bubbled up in the 2000s and hit it's golden age.
I grabbed a ticket for March 20 at Union Pool. Thanks for the rec!
This will be my new favourite band once they release an album.
You can hear more of them on bandcamp
Are they, then?
@@max-beckett damn it you beat me to it
how you feelin about them now?
@@WakaWakaGuitar black midi's recent album is a masterpiece, thats how i feel about them lol
That bass players vocals around the 1:30 mark were actually fucking amazing
This is something else -- fucking phenomenal.
Reminds me of: '80s King Crimson, DNA (or other No-Wave bands), Sonic Youth, the Jesus Lizard, and a lot of Mission of Burma. And, increasingly, This Heat.
Word up ... side note this heat is fire
Glad someone mentioned No Wave. Such an overlooked genre and you can clearly see it in here.
This also gave me some Talking Heads feel.
Can is also a great influence of theirs.
Lot of This Heat influence popping up these days for some reason. Some Preoccupations and Palm songs remind me of This Heat, too. Anyway, this band is great.
Just discovered this band recently, only after they broke up... :( Happy there's still lots of video's to enjoy them tho :)
It sounds like chaos. Then you start to realize it's carefully orchestrated and coordinated chaos.
I can't talk trash... They're sooo GOOD!
GET ON SPOTIFY Black Midi!
and Apple music. The world needs to know about these guys.
Thegreatmutato they have some 20 minute recordings on Bandcamp worth checking out and definitely worth
Supporting these guys
they dont want to bc they're shy and awkward
Nash Evans do u have a link?
Think they're not streaming on purpose. I think these guys care about music, not so much the fucked industry behind it.
wow cool drummer...maybe my imagination but he seems to relentlessly drive them, or do they just all feed off of each others madness...whatever it is, it works for me
A steady beat is somewhat required to hold down this gigantic avalanche of noise
String Traveler well I guess that the one thing that is constant is that they are usually in time and when they aren’t it’s for artistic choice. And they usually stay in the same key somewhat
R.I.P
Don't call them kids. The control they have on every aspect of what they're doing is exceptional. Bravo Black Midi and Bravo KEXP.
if anything, acknowledging all of that and still calling them kids is a compliment. they’re still just kids, yet they’ve accomplished this thus far.
One of the wildest moshes that you’ll ever have a part in is at their performances, heed my words and buy tickets to the next show of theirs that’s close to you
Most Palone I’m watching them in summer, any good?
joe gibson not this summer
This comment aged very poorly
Incredible. Their age, their talent, their energy. The guitarist screeches like Jim Morrison which is tight as shit. The drummer is a god. So experimental.
The guitarist/vocalist reminded me a lot of Adrian Belew during his time with King Crimson
They're like The Shaggs except they know what they're doing
yes
Mars Volta plays Philosophy of the World
The Shaggs Volta
They’re like the Shaggs.
So, Captain Beefheart.
holy shit i thought music like this wasnt being being made anymore
That's the great thing about music. While the world goes to shit and times get tough music still shines through all the darkness.
Ooh what other music do you know of thats like this?
@@gdavis9296 Try bands like Henry Cow or This Heat. Both from the UK as well. Faust from Germany is also in this ballpark. Pere Ubu from the US. black midi sound very inspired by all these bands who originally around in the 70's.
@@lessthanpinochet thanks brotha
@@gdavis9296 I'd recommend the short lived prog rock band T2. Album it will all work out in boom land
The fourth song (ducter?) gives off major slint vibes. This is good shit.
omfg, the best shit ive listened to for a whole while. these guys are a sensation!
Super inspiring. Not even into this style of music really but I love how experimental this is!
Legendary performance.
When Schlagenheim came out, it was a game changer for me.
I'm gonna see them in Primavera soon, I'm waiting for it since 2019! Can't wait.
Did you see them at Primavera? I was there too. Can't say the moshpit was the best ever, too many drunk idiots, Lightning Bolt and Idles had 10000 times better moshpits, but the black midi set was cacophanously great. Mix wasn't amazing - sax and keyboard were super low on the mix, could hardly hear them sometimes. Still a great time, I'll try to catch them in London next month.
@@el_mal_de_ojo yeah I was there! Front line. Had a great time!
@@el_mal_de_ojo and yes the Lightning Bolt show was incredible! I did my first crowd surfing there and also met them both after the show.
I missed the Idles show unfortunately, saw gorillaz and Tyler instead
Its been a while since the last time I saw a band that was so good with their toys
So thankful to KEXP for introducing me to this great band.
Caleb Mastronardi yes same
10:49... that exchange though. What a smile. It illuminates satisfaction and accomplishment.
Hella and Slint vibes...very cool very clean EDIT: also that drummer is really good
I absolutely LOVE this. I don't know if they are familiar with King Crimson's Larks' Tongues in Aspic and Discipline, but I can see how those albums could be influential here
100%
20:23 texting his mum that he'll be late for dinner.
“mom the people here are making me uncomfortable, can you pick me up please”
Matt. :)
953 went hard. One of the best album openers in recent memory
The drummer reminds me to Jon Theodore when he played with the mars volta
More like Thomas Pridgen.
