It never ceases to amaze me that everyone cursed having to do national service...yet so often the old soldiers look back and talk about the good times we had.....we were a formidable bunch. Even the Russians were scared of us😂
Major Moore was in A squadron when I served in 1ssb. He was a rhino of a man in our troopie eyes. Robbie kanes, also in the beginning of this clip on the noddy was our sergeant major in b squadron..good memories.
Done my time , and glad i did. Today i can say. The military made me what i am today. If i could get those days back . I would not hesitate. The best 4 years of my life.
I beg to humbly differ to a slight extent. Ambush was undertaken by A Squadron 1SSB in October 1987. Troop 4 was set up to do the Ambush and my Troop. Troop 5 was in reserve to protect the Support vehicles and to move forward if needed. Troop 4 was in the bushes 30 m from the road and Troop 5 was another 30 m behind them. First word of the Ambush coming came through at 3.00 am and the convoy reached the kill zone at 3.50am . At 6 am we were instructed to pull back. Was at that stage that CPL Frans Terblanche realized his Bravo car had not responded and he jumped out and ran to the burning BRDM and then returned to his car. Everyone pulled back a few km to regroup. Troop 5. My Troop was then instructed to move back to the kill zone and try and recover some of the vehicles. Upon reaching the kill zone word came through that the Fapla forces were regrouping and we were then instructed to rather shoot out the vehicles. My Eland 90 shot 3 HEAT rounds through the cab of the diesel bunker before it eventually blew up my Bravo or Charlie car shot out the beer truck and a truck filled with maize meal and a few other vehicles scattered all over. We were then instructed to pull back to the original group. There we elevated our 90 mm cannons and fired rounds towards the Ambush site. We then left to move back to our original drawing point . On the way back a Buffel Troop carrier detonated a mice but no fatalaties were sustained. 2 nd LT Grimes (Rip) was shot through the shoulder and evacuated. Unconfirmed vehicles destroyed were 21 out of 23 and 69 Fspla soldiers killed
Correct - Will (RIP) was wounded and casevacced - I have a pic of him after the ambush ..... Ian could you tell more re the 201 Bn guys in the ambush ..... will appreciate... or is there a way I can contact you please
@Danie van den Berg yes the 201 battalion guys were deployed amongst the Eland 90 s of Troop 4 to protect the armoured cars. I also remember that the Fapla forces opened up at our guys with a twin barreled 23 mm mounted on the back of a vehicle. Luckily they were taken out by the 201 Battalion guys. Fapla forces were relatively new and instead of many of them fighting back many just grabbed their kit and ran away and in doing so many were shot and killed. According to some of our 1SSB guys I believe 2 nd Lt Grimes passed away recently. You are most welcome to contact me. Just don't want to post my cellphone numbers here
No not that ambush. 1 SSB relieved 2 SSB on the 3rd of June 1987 and we were deployed to 10 Armour ,Oshikati until December 1987 when we were relieved again and flew back to Bloem
I'm very proud of my time in the former SADF and op afgedeelde diens with SWATF's 101bn. Salute to 1SSB for a job well done. I'm a bit confused because the narrator mentions 101bn a few times yet some comments refer to 201bn? I was with 101bn in 85 and 86. We had Casspirs in 901, 902, 903 and 904SSC/SDK's. These were the Romeo Mike company's. Each company at that stage had 3 teams of 4 Casspirs and a Kwe. 901, for instance, had RM1, RM2 and RM3. Also, Ops Firewood happened in 1987. 101bn took big losses there. Very long day for those involved. But it's great to hear these stories and to read comments from others who took part in this ambush.
Ok, thanks. I wondered because we used to occupy ongiva and xangongo when i was there in 1982. I guess the SA govt. Must have abondoned those places and withdrawn all troops back into SWA, I dunno why? So those bases must have become re-occupied by fapla, swapo and maybe cubans too?
Nou, in die klein dorpie van Lindley, FS, al wat ons het is 'n Buurtwag en geen hoop van 'n Bierwag nie. 😏 (1968 -1980 Army Gym (Heidelburg), RTU 5 SAI under Capt. Louis Heap, then Durban Regiment - LMG #1 to 2Lt. Platoon Leader, finally Group 38 H.Q. Mil. Int. - Durban & coastal defenses, linked to Harbour Master's Offices & Mirages based at the old Louis Botha Airport) Several border camps with 2 x non-combat special ops. (Cartography updates on SWA/Angola border & Scientific research involving Senegalia Ataxacantha & Acacia Arenaria thorn-trees, reporting directly to Gen. Jannie Geldenhuis in Ondangwa, driving a clearly demonic, recovered, Cuban WW2 style US, SWB Jeep.) 😏 Best years ever.
Afro-communists. Looking at South Africa now, it's not hard at all to see what they fought for. Too bad we were all stabbed in the back. And here we are, in a 3rd world trash heap.
Won what ? only politicians won that scuffle... and yes I was there. I say scuffle because when i see the Ukrainian/Russian conflict I realized the difference.

It was Operation Firewood, was called Operation Firewood B 1987 around October
@@HistoricMilitaryInterviewswere any of the SSB units involved in Firewood? My memory said only Special Forces, but then is this a second leg?
